I thought this was just going to be a heater track but her fan club is reporting that this is her new single. It was produced by Kanye West. I really could see this one doing big things for her. It's really reminiscent of "You Don't Know My Name". Her third album is called, "Chapter 3: The Flesh" and is due out this summer. My only complaint about this track is the speaking nonsense. It brought Alicia's down a bit and it does here too, but it's still a great song. s11.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=A9585BB33B13F1B5526445BD72848E50

I've been up on this song for a few weeks now, even though it hasn't been released to radio yet. I Love It.
Even the speaking part...it's engaging and interactive. That's what real R&B is about and it has become a forgotten part of soul music. Artists from back in the day used to do it. Speaking was a key element of R&B an element that is missing today IMO.
So I applaud Syleena Johnson for staying true to the roots of real soul music. :)

JIVE has temporarily postponed this album due to Syleena's vocal strain. The album has been pushed back from July to October. There is no word on whether or not this will still be the first single from "Chapter 3".

Why is her vocie strained? What has she done as of late?
And why is sha naming her albums all of these chapters?
I hope this one is called Chapter 3: The End Cause nobody is really feeling her.......I dont even think Kanye can generate an interest in her. R. Kelly couldnt do much with her and in his heights he was hotter then Kanye and has a better track record. Some people are just not meant to be successful recording artists i guess...

That's harsh! but seriously if the music is really that hot people will like it. I mean look at Beyonce...she had a few false starts before finally getting a hit.

If she doesn't put Stacey Dash on the cover, she's going to miss out on some potential sales.
Sadly I didn't download the mp3 before it expired.

and some people are not meant to record garbage like beyonce and lloyd banks do oh well. everyones opinion is different. One mans garbage is millions of other peoples treasures like Lloyd and Beyonce......cant say the same for Syleena. She is a mediocure r&b artist at best. But oh well I wish her the best. She had 2 songs on her last album I liked. But how many hot r&b/hip hop producers do u have to work with before u get a hit??? Anyway no1 answered my question, why is her voice strained? Its not as if she has been touring or anything.

I've heard people say she's mediocre, but I think she's just a real soul singer. She truly sings from the heart. We've gotten so used to being sold an image and style ( whether it be the thin pop diva or the wholistic afro/loc wearing soul sista). We expect people to fit certain profiles with their images and style of music.
To answer your question about her vocal chords...She had nodes removed from her vocal chords previously. This should explain, from MSN.com:
Johnson is the daughter of '60s R&B/blues singer Syl Johnson, who penned the hit song "Take Me to the River." She grew up listening to Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Tina Turner, the Dells, and Mavis Staples. Early on, she developed a love for music. She performed in local bands in Chicago. She sang in her church choir at Greater Christian Unity. She worked in classical and gospel choirs as well as jazz ensembles at Drake University and at Illinois State University, where she majored in music. After having nodes removed from her vocal cords, she took two years of speech therapy. She has seven years of vocal training. All the hard work made Johnson one of her generation's most soulful and realistic R&B singers.

I knew about her vocal strain, but her fansite said she's still singing with the help of medication and still reports her album comes out in July. I doubt that happens, but hopefully it comes out before October.

and some people are not meant to record garbage like beyonce and lloyd banks do I wouldn't say beyonce is garbage (even though they're trying to mimic her after Tina Turner). She's a great entertainer as well as singer. She's just easily marketed because she can pull off the pop appeal. Syleena isn't pop, she's real deal soul. But that's also how the industry is messing up music IMO. The pop artists are heavily marketed while other talented artists are place on the back burner. The industry is so cookie cutter right now and that's what's garbage. You have to look and sound a certain way. And what's more is that we buy into that cookie cutter garbage.

I thnk she has a nice voice but she just seems destined to be another r&b singer......just like Tamia and Deborah Cox who have 2 of the best voices in music but they are not on the level of far less talented singers like Beyonce or Ashanti.....sometimes thats just the way things go and that brings me back to my original statement "not everyone is meant to be a successful recording artist." Not saying its a bad thing, as long as some1 likes your music. But not everyone can win the whole world over.

BlueNote, you were saying she should pack it up and retire and now you're saying atleast someone likes her music she can do what she wants. Those are two different opinions entirely but I'm glad to see that you know that not everyone needs to be selling several times platinum to be respected and have fans.

Yes i realize my 1st post was a little hasty, I had to think about it for a minute....i think the point i was more or less trying to make in the 1st post is that she seems to really be trying to become a big success by working with hit makers and top artists like R. Kelly, Busta Rhymes, and Kanye West but it reall isnt happening. I honestly think that when some artists with nice voices are not successful after working with big name artists they try to play it off like success isnt that important and tis all about the music....well if that was the case you wouldnt be tyring to work with to "hit makers" in the business. Thats the observation i wanted to notice.

She was R. Kelly's protege. That's why she worked with him. She did the majority of her first two albums with him.

Thats the observation i wanted to notice. I honestly think the industry is the one placing the most pressure on her. She's mentioned that in a couple interviews. I think you can strive for success and love what you do, no matter how much or little you get paid. These days you have to be big platinum sellers or you risk getting dropped by the label. That's a lot of pressure. Which means there's little room for individuality. The industry is usually the force that doesn't allow artists to be themselves. If you're not Pop or have a "Marketable sound and image" the industry won't back you properly. And we follow their lead mindlessly.

This is a nice interview with Syleena Johnson on BBC in the UK. They play some of the new songs off her new album. Phone Sex, More, and Pitter Patter are the names of the songs. They're really nice. One of these songs should be a single. More is a duet with Jahiem....this is such a beautiful song. They sound classic. She said Pitter Patter was written by Bilal. Can't wait to hear more from him. After listening to all this I'm ready for Chapter 3. Here's the link. The interview is about 25 minutes long... db.bbc.co.uk/1xtra/rnb/

What does this song sample? I think it samples something by The Stylistics but I don't know the song. It's bugging me.

I have no idea what Syleena is doing. She was singing at the VMAs so her vocals can't be that bad. This is one of my favorite songs of the year and one of my absolute favorite Kanye tracks ever. I NEED AN ADDS DATE!!!

I recently heard a version of Bullseye featuring Common. It's basically the same song with a Common verse on it.
Bullseye is a beautiful song, but I guess it's not gaining the momentum the label wants.
Since then I've heard a LOVELY duet with Syleena Johnson featuring Jaheim called More.
I've also heard Syleena Johnson's song version of All Falls Down. That's pretty nice too, even though All Falls Down has run it's course.
I don't know what's happening. Her voice is back to normal. Maybe the label is re-working her album for release.
I recently saw an article in the October VIBE stating Chapter 3: The Flesh will be released this fall. Hopefully something comes out soon. I'm ready for something. I keep hearing all these songs, but no official release.

I could understand if Syleena was a huge artist and this leak wasn't doing much but it's doing very well for someone who has never had a major hit. It's been on WBLS's playlist for months. If a major New York urban station is responding well to a non-single, it has to have some interest in it. I wish they'd release this but judging from the tracks I've heard, she's going to have quite a few nice singles from this album.

Hopefully they're trying to time her release properly. What songs have you heard on her new album? I heard the joint with Jaheim, Phone Sex, Pitter Patter, and the song version of All Falls Down. I even heard a dope french hip hop song that features Syleena Johnson.

I heard "Bullseye," "More," and another song that I think was "Phone Sex," and they were all very good. I've always liked her music and bought her last album but this already sounds like a major step up for her and hopefully will confirm her place at radio and in the industry. Her biggest hit is definitely going to come from this album.
