I know it might be a bit early to start this thread (there are only 5 months left though), but I found this article posted in the Carrie Underwood thread. Figured more people would like to read it, debate on what is said and make their own deductions as to what they think will, or deserves to, be nominated. Discuss.

From Avril Lavigne to R. Kelly, here's a look at possible Grammy contenders.

Although it may seem like the Grammys were just on TV yesterday, watching them should continue year-round. That's because music released last December, this month or up through this summer, may be major contenders in the next Grammy contest.
We are about half way through the eligibility period spanning the next Grammy race (Oct. 1, 2006 to Sept. 30, 2007). It's time to take stock of some current hit singles and videos -- plus upcoming releases -- that might be major Grammy players.
HOT MUSIC VIDEOS AND SINGLES
Daughtry - "It's Not Over" Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood are both "American Idol" alumni and multiple Grammy winners. Will Daughtry continue the "Idol" winning streak?
Beyonce & Shakira - "Beautiful Liar" Last year, Shakira's "Hips Don't Lie" featuring Wyclef Jean topped most charts but lost the Grammy for best pop collaboration with vocals. This Shakira powerhouse duet with Beyonce could be nominated, too -- and have better luck.
Gwen Stefani featuring Akon - "The Sweet Escape" Can another catchy Gwen Stefani song score a nomination for record of the year?
Maroon 5 - "Makes Me Wonder" Right now Maroon 5 is the front-runner for best pop performance by a duo or group with vocals.
Akon - "Don't Matter" Akon is dominating the charts with this single and multiple collaborations with everyone from Snoop Dogg to Gwen Stefani. He might be hard to ignore come Grammy time.
The Killers - "Read My Mind" This is the third release from their latest album "Sam's Town," and this song is receiving the most airplay thus far. The Killers will most likely get nominated in the rock field this year, having been nommed for best rock song last year ("When You Were Young," also nommed for best short form music video) and, previously for rock vocals ("All These Things That I've Done"). Killers have also popped up in pop vocals ("Mr. Brightside"), but have never made a real killing -- still Grammyless.
Joss Stone - "Tell Me 'Bout It" She has been nominated in the pop field and won in the R&B field.
Fergie featuring Ludacris - "Glamorous" Don't expect to see this song nominated for best rap/sung collaboration. Surprisingly, "Glamorous" was on last year's Grammy entry list and probably cannot be resubmitted this year.
Feist - "1234" This is the first original and noteworthy music video of 2007. This song is addictive and catchy. Expect VH1 to pick up on this video ASAP. Even though this is not Feist's first album, she could be considered for best new artist.
Amy Winehouse - "You Know I'm No Good" VH1's "You Oughta Know" artist Amy Winehouse is receiving huge word-of-mouth buzz and enjoying steady album sales. It is uncertain if she will be considered pop or R&B come Grammy time. She may be a contender for best new artist.
Lily Allen - "Smile" She is the first noteworthy best new artist contender of 2007, with buzz, critical praise and accolades for a "Saturday Night Live" performance. Why isn't VH1 heavily playing Lily Allen?
John Legend - "PDA (We Just Don't Care)" With two unexpected wins at the 2006 Grammys, now that his album is eligible, John Legend is a definite contender at the upcoming Grammys in the R&B field and has real possibilities in the general field.
Carrie Underwood - "Before He Cheats" 2006 best new artist Grammy winner Carrie Underwood has officially crossed over. In addition to country airplay, she is now in video rotation on VH1 and MTV.
SPRING RELEASES
APRIL 17
AVRIL LAVIGNE – "THE BEST DAMN THING" This 23-year-old singer/songwriter's album is one of the most anticipated of the year. She received eight Grammy nominations (including two bids for song of the year), all off of her debut album "Let Go" (2002). Her sophomore disk "Under My Skin" (2004) received no nominations. Both albums sold well. Will Avril recover from her Grammy sophomore slump?
NINE INCH NAILS – "YEAR ZERO" Two-time Grammy winners Trent Reznor and the band are back earlier than expected. Though consistently Grammy-nominated, NIN has not won a Grammy in 12 years. They will likely receive a third consecutive Grammy nomination for best hard rock performance.
APRIL 24
PATTI SMITH – "TWELVE" 2007 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Patti Smith is back with an album of essential rock cover songs. She covers everything from the Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" to Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Smith has never won a Grammy, but she is a veteran you cannot underestimate. She may have a good shot if the Grammys reinstate the best female rock vocal performance category next year.
ARCTIC MONKEYS – "FAVOURITE NEW NIGHTMARE" Critically acclaimed, twice Grammy-nominated Alternative Rock band returns a year later.
THE NIGHTWATCHMAN – "ONE MAN REVOLUTION" This is Tom Morello's solo project under the pseudonym The Nightwatchman. He is a two-time Grammy winner with Rage Against The Machine and Grammy nominee with Audioslave.
MAY 1
TORI AMOS - "AMERICAN DOLL POSSE" Eight-time Grammy-nominated artist Tori Amos releases her ninth studio album. Since her second major LP, "Under the Pink" in 1994, she was consistently nominated for best alternative music album through for 2001 "Strange Little Girls." Her last two albums, "Scarlet's Walk" (2002) and "The Beekeepers" (2005), failed to receive any Grammy nominations. It's hard to be an Alternative Rock Goddess at the Grammys. Just ask Liz Phair, PJ Harvey and Bjork.
MICHAEL BUBLE – "CALL ME IRRESPONSIBLE" Two-time Grammy nominee Michael Buble releases his third studio album of classic songs, such as Frank Sinatra's "The Best Is Yet to Come" and Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind." The album includes two original new songs. Buble is likely to receive his third consecutive Grammy nomination for best traditional pop vocal album.
FEIST – "THE REMINDER" Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Leslie Feist may appear on this year's Grammy radar. She may even factor into the best new artist, like last year's unexpected best new artist nominee Imogen Heap. Her refreshing and original new video for the extremely catchy song "1234" makes her hard to ignore.
NE-YO – "BECAUSE OF YOU" Ne-Yo returns with the follow-up album to his twice Grammy-nominated debut album "In My Own Words" (2006). He has the potential to score multiple new bids, having songwriting collaborations with Jay-Z, Beyonce, Musiq Soulchild and others.
MAY 8
BJORK – "VOLTA" Academy Award nominee and 12-time Grammy contender Bjork will release her sixth album. Since she appeared on the music scene in 1993, she has been consecutively nominated in multiple Grammy fields. In 2004, she unexpectedly was nominated in the extremely competitive race for best female pop vocal performance. Since her second LP "Post," Bjork has been consistently nommed for best alternative music album. No female artist has won in that category since its first year (1990), when Sinead O'Connor prevailed. It will be interesting to see where Bjork pops up this year.
BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY – "STRENGTH & LOYALTY" Winners of the 1996 best rap performance by a duo or group winners for their hit "Tha Crossroads," they hope to return to the Grammy spotlight. Their latest single, "I Tried," with current chart-topper Akon, is a promising contender for best rap/sung collaboration.
TRAVIS – "THE BOY WITH NO NAME" Scottish rock/pop band Travis returns with its fifth album. It's hoping to finally be upgraded in the U.S. with mainstream success like U.K. bands Coldplay and Keane. Its latest music video, for the song "Closer" (yet to be released in the U.S.), features Ben Stiller.
MAY 15
WILCO – "SKY BLUE SKY" Critically acclaimed Wilco releases its sixth album. Its most successful and best reviewed disc, "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" (2002), garnered no Grammy love. But its follow-up "A Ghost Is Born" (2004) won best alternative music album, beating stiff competition. Wilco has also been nominated in the folk field for its collaboration with Billy Bragg. Its cross-genre style defies classification.
LINKIN PARK – "MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT" One of the best-selling bands of this decade and a two-time Grammy winner, Linkin Park will release its eagerly awaited third album. Its second album, "Meteora" (2003), sold well but only received one Grammy nom (best rock instrumental performance). It last won in the rap field for best rap/sung collaboration with Jay-Z for "Numb/Encore" in 2005.
RUFUS WAINWRIGHT – "RELEASE THE STARS" Singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright will release his fifth album. He has yet to be nominated for a Grammy, despite his musical family pedigree.
GRETCHEN WILSON – "ONE OF THE BOYS" Eight Grammy nominations and one win for best female country vocal performance makes this "Redneck Woman" a definite contender in the country field.
MAY 22
MAROON 5 – "IT WON'T BE SOON BEFORE LONG" Two-time Grammy winners (including 2004 best new artist) are back with their highly anticipated sophomore album. Maroon 5 has the potential to become a serious Grammy contender.
OZZY OSBOURNE – "BLACK RAIN" Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and two-time Grammy winner Ozzy Osbourne returns with his first studio album with new material in six years. He is likely to return in the best metal performance category.
THREE 6 MAFIA – "LAST 2 WALK" This Academy Award-winning rap group has not yet been nominated for a Grammy.
MAY 29
R. KELLY -- "DOUBLE UP" Prolific R&B singer/songwriter R. Kelly has received several nominations in the past 10 years. But he has not won since "I Believe I Can Fly" won three Grammys in 1997.
SATELLITE PARTY – ULTRA PAYLOADED Five-time Grammy contender Perry Farrell is back with his third new band. This album features several past Grammy-winners, including Fergie and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
