Recent events have prompted the staff to implement a policy whereby from this date forward the posting and requesting of links to download songs will no longer be allowed on PMB. It has gotten incredibly out-of-hand in recent weeks and is detracting from the discussion of music that this board was created to facilitate.
If you must trade song files, please do so through Private Messages, Email, Instant Messengers, etc. Links to streaming files are still perfectly fine, and we are prepared to continue allowing links to live performances, radio rips, rare unreleased tracks, etc. In compliance with the ProBoards terms of service, links to download songs that are or will be available for purchase will be deleted. Posting such a link or asking for one to be posted will result in a warning, and doing so repeatedly may result in a ban.
PMB is not a file sharing service and there are plenty of sites for finding music. Our goal is providing a forum for discussion. Thanks for your understanding and cooperation.

So this includes remixes that you can't find in stores or as pay downloads? Just wondering.

Thanks, I think this is a good rule, although I hope the RIAA didn't come around looking to start trouble. :(

Thanks, I think this is a good rule, although I hope the RIAA didn't come around looking to start trouble. :( In a way, this could help decrease the chances of any trouble happening. And we don't want to harm our favorite artists' sales. Right folks?

Dee based on the rules i would say those would be permittedΒ they arentΒ in storesΒ or on any type of paid music service! so itΒ would be classified as a rarity or something unreleased! so based on that i would think its allowed and it would have no affect on sales. just be sure to mention its a rarity or unreleased or whatever when u post it so they dont delete it

Yes, as far as what I understand the staff has come to a consensus on, those would qualify as "unreleased", and thus would be okay to post.

Would it still be ok to post All Access links, or is that a borderline issue?

Does this include the songs that reception posts in the Nostalgia forum? (sometimes he includes a full clip of the song).

I must imagine this has to be a bandwidth issue too.
I have streaming links on my site- so far no problems there but I'll delete it if problems crop up.

I guess I'm cool with it... I find a lot of music on this site that I would never just go and download for no reason... but I may just stream it for one listen, and then find that I actually like it... but what I don't know about I won't be worrying about.

Here's how to keep your mix, album, whatever legal:
1. As long as you do not state the name of the artist or song on the exterior of the jewel case, the customer is buying your product based on the reputation of the DJ and not the music being utilized. Therefore the customer is buying the 'mix', and not a specific song. 2. Within this context, one can copyright their 'mixes' so that in the event someone tries to get a rep off of your expertise, you can take legal action against them. 3. A DJ can make compilation mixes and package them for 'Mom & Pop' record stores (with the record store providing the music)in the same manner and get paid as well. Perfectly legal 4. Always write or print "promo only not for sale" on your mix cd 5. As far as broadcast issues go, radio stations are responsible for reporting what is played, and are responsible for paying those royalties. So if your mix is played on a station, you get paid (if your smart), get promoted on the radio for free, and the radio station pays the fees to BMI or ASCAP. btw most clubs pay BMI, or ASCAP annual fees so you can play your mix their too :) The bottom line is in general as long as you're not selling thousands of copies retail the RIAA really doesn't care they're more concerned with mass filesharing which I DO NOT advocate. Alot of times my mixes in particular feature unknown white label artists who want their music exposed. Hope this helps clear some of the confusion. If you have any questions please contact me I'd be more than happy to help

so unreleased tracks are fair game? If they are not commercially available (on a CD or digital download stores like iTunes), it's okay to post them. Just don't make a habit of constantly posting just to ask for MP3s.

This is almost 2 months old now, so it is hardly a 'new' policy anymore. Time to change the titles to all the topics. Or, to just remove it altogether since it was never a significant problem to begin with.

Or, to just remove it altogether since it was never a significant problem to begin with. That's a valid point, but they don't want the "trouble" to start again as soon as the policy post is un-stickied. The vast majority of the situations outlined in KikiMets's post were occurring in the dance section. It had gotten to the point that almost all the posts at a certain point were just mp3 requests. Certain ProBoards-based forums got into lots of trouble for the amount of downloading occurring. We don't want that kind of trouble here. And it's the final decision of the Administrators and Moderators as to whether they leave this download policy post pinned to the top.

Like I said, it was never a significant problem. I'm sure that 90 percent of this board isn't even aware that there is a dance forum. I sure wasn't. Now my discontent over this is even greater now that I've been informed that the whole rule was created based on what takes place in a forum I didn't even realize we had.
