Boston Globe review, finally! :) www.boston.com/ae/music/cd_reviews/articles/2007/10/30/well_take_a_ticket_to_this_ride/Carnival Ride (Arista Nashville) Small towns and big dreams are the pillars of Carrie Underwood's career, and the second album from the former "American Idol" is a big, buffed country-pop collection that manages to be humble and arena-ready all at once. "Carnival Dreams," a worthy successor to Underwood's 6-million-selling debut, will surely install the blond belter from Checotah, Okla., on the crossover throne once occupied by Faith Hill and Shania Twain. "Love is all that matters," Underwood promises on "So Small," an inspirational, one-size-fits-all anthem that weaves warm mandolin with electric guitars and swelling strings. Back-porch fiddles mingle with a rock 'n' roll rhythm section on the shimmery thigh-slapper "Flat on the Floor," and returning producer Mark Bright wisely adds some ambient elements to "Twisted," a chugging paean to bad love, and by-the-numbers power ballad "Wheel of the World." Underwood's voice is powerful but blessedly unflashy; despite her singing-contest roots, she chooses her notes and tones for musicality, not pageantry. Underwood is able to channel both a grieving young war widow ("Just a Dream") with heart and a party girl who wakes up married ("Last Name") with grit, and that's no small feat. A cover of Randy Travis's somber "I Told You So," with harmony vocals from Vince Gill, is the only authentically country track on the album, but Underwood sounds most like herself on the sweet, jubilant hybrid "All-American Girl." [Joan Anderman]
ESSENTIAL "All-American Girl"that was awesome! very nice review overall. :)

I'm confused---- was this a real, planned interview? or did some crazy dj just randomly call carrie at home? I don't think that is allowed. Carrie could get him in alot of trouble, especially after the crude remark. well, it sounds like someone on carrie's side set this up. who knows really. i think he is so crazy over carrie that his brain went up in smoke the moment she answered the phone. i for one can attest to the fact that most guys this age do have their brains go up in smoke in carrie's presence. he was trying to be smart allecky and impress her, and the 'joke' backfired. thank goodness i never tried to crack jokes with carrie lol yeah she didn't like that...lol Don't blame her, it came off crude.

^The CA fires are much worse. It turns out I'm very close to the epicenter, which is actually a good thing -- even though it felt pretty big to us, it's only a 5.6. I had been refreshing Google News waiting to get a reading...I've been there, kungaloosh...pretty unnerving. Anyway, back to Carrie. I had been meaning to post about "Flat on the Floor." leilamaurizia, I didn't get a domestic abuse vibe from it -- I get too much of a flirty/sassy vibe from "Baby, baby, baby, tell me how/You think you're gonna live without my love now" for it to be about something that serious. There seems to be a strong "I'm still so attracted to you" vibe underlying the song. I guess I have a pretty straightforward interpretation of the FotF lyrics -- the storm is a tornado, meant to represent this extremely tempestuous relationship this girl has with the guy she's singing to, and the song is her saying that she is taking cover and not letting him in until the storm passes (i.e., he leaves her alone). It doesn't sound like she thinks she could resist him if she did let him in, even though she knows it would mess her up. jenglisbe, I think the lyric "I'm flat on the floor/With my head down low/Where the sky can't rain on me anymore" is meant to evoke the particular stance that people are supposed to take when they're trying to protect themselves from fierce hurricanes/tornadoes (aren't you supposed to tuck your head into your body to shield yourself from the worst?). ETA: Thanks to lyrichord for the Boston Globe review! I think Anderman is just saying that Carrie's ITYS cover is the only traditional country song on the album. I guess that's fair. I love her compliments of Carrie's vocal artistry, and the review has an interesting discussion of how different elements from different genres are integrated into the songs.

Plus, the DJ doesn't seem to be the most credible guy around.

Tsharky, this may be the 4 hour CMA special thing although XM usually produces their own material. According to Producer J. from XM 16, Carrie will be co-hosting with Jon Anthony a special celebrating the upcoming CMAs. To be aired this friday 11/2 on XM ch. 16 at 2PM Eastern.

I still consider the KMPS "shooting cows" and "Oklahomans walking barefoot" interview the worst ever. That was a prolonged, uncomfortable interview. I actually remember squirming in my seat while listening to how the DJs kept digging a bigger hole for themselves as the interview went on.
I enjoyed reading the Boston Globe review except that I would have appreciated an accurate album title. Carnival Dreams?

He started with saying that he has a huge crush on her, he LOVES her (I'm surprised she didn't hang up then!) and then if he took her out on a date, where would she like to go? She answered saying bowling, eating out, movies, sporting event. And then he says Dallas Cowboys game? And she said any... he said he's not the best quarterback, but he throw balls with the best of them... the she said her sarcastic "okay" and hung up! LOL! Now I know what Carrie means with the song "The More Boys I Meet (The More I Love My Dog)". With creeps like this being one of the guys she meets or talks to I get it now.

Carrie was interviewed in studio at WWKF's THE WOLF. Over 23 mins of interview! Till my site comes back up, you can download the audio here. Pausing to post... They almost used the single pass for "I Know You Won't," when they were laying down tracks and she was singing with the band and everything clicked. I would have liked to hear that.

Anything over 500k would have been just gravy for me. It's still going to be number one on billboard all genre and of course, country. Britney will take the number one spot the following week, but Carrie will outsell her and alot of others in the longrun.

Billboard.biz:
• Carrie Underwood's second album, "Carnival Ride," gives the singer her first No. 1 on The Billboard 200 as the album bows with 527,000. It's her second chart-topper on Top Country Albums. Her first set, 2005's "Some Hearts," debuted at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 and at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with 315,000. This week, the album sits at Nos. 60 and 13 on those charts, respectively. "Some Hearts" remains 2007's top selling country album, with 1.3 million sold this year.
• Underwood's 527,000 opener for "Ride" is the best sales week for a female solo country artist since Shania Twain's "Greatest Hits" started with 530,000 in November 2004. In terms of all women, Underwood's bow is the best since Beyonce's "B'Day" blew in with 541,000 in September 2006 ... Underwood's current single, "So Small," rises into the top three on Hot Country Songs, giving the artist her fifth top three single ... Meanwhile, the singles from "Some Hearts" just won't die. On the Adult Contemporary chart, "Before He Cheats" is bulleted at No. 8, where it has been lodged in the top 10 for the past 19 weeks.

Thanks for the link, thescene. Here's how I break the numbers down: I'm assuming Coolfer's claim that 9% of CR's sales were digital is accurate since it got the 527K figure right. That would put CR's digital sales somewhere between 45-50K -- impressive in and of itself considering there was no iTunes bonus track or ad presence on the iTunes front or iTunes music page (at least not for long). Further, that would mean CR's brick & mortar store sales were between 477K and 482K. Now, before the digital market exploded, the expectation was typically that an album would sell 1/4 to 1/3 of its initial shipment in the first week (1/4 is kind of the floor in terms of expectation, 1/3 would be the hoped-for sales). With an initial shipment of 1.4 million, that means expectations for first-week sales in stores would be between 350K and 467K, with a point estimate of about 408K. Looking at in-store sales alone, it looks like CR beat those expectations -- which is fantastic! Congratulations to Carrie and her team on a great first week of Carnival Ride sales and on reaching #1 on the Billboard Top-200 Albums chart! Really enjoyed the WOLF interview! Add me to the list of people who would love to hear the "single pass" version of IKYW. thescene, "single pass" is just a one take performance of the song, and it sounds like this one was one take of vocals with the live instrumentation. So here's the Grand Rapids Press review of Carnival Ride -- very complimentary indeed:

Is the negativity really necessary? It's not like there's anything TO rationalize. Carrie's sales were amazing... someone was just making a point that 527k is not equal to what it would have been three years ago and that this is a huge achievement for Carrie that probably won't be matched by another solo female artist anytime soon.

It's a known fact that 3 years ago, digital sales would have been lower than 2007 as the popularity and ease of use increase year after year and consumers feel adept and more comfortable buying digitally. Therefore the statement above is true. The physical sales would have been higher IMO but, the figures to break 500k is impressive in itself. Gold right out the bat. In lighter news......................... perezhilton.com/?p=8002Carrie Underwood’s new CD has done even better than we predicted!
Carnival Ride is the #1 album in the U.S., having sold a staggering 527,000 copies during its debut week.
This is the American Idol winner’s first #1 album.
Her new disc also bests her previous effort, 2005’s Some Hearts, which debuted to 315,000 in its first week.
The total is also the best sales week for a female country artist since Shania Twain’s Greatest Hits started with 530,000 in November of 2004.
This was a good week for country music! In a first for the Billboard 200, three country debuts occupy the Nos. 1-3 slots on the chart, led by Underwood’s Carnival Ride.
Robert Plant and Alison Krauss‘ Raising Sand opens at #2, selling 112,000.
Country singer Gary Allan’s Living Hard enters at #3 with 69,000 copies.
Underwood’s debut of 530,000 copies is DOUBLE what Kelly Clarkson’s latest CD, My December, sold in its first week.
Congrats Carrie!

Noticed the FC linked to this LIFETIME article? Was this ever posted here? Carrie Underwood : The World’s Most Successful “Normal” GirlCarrie Underwood won “American Idol” and the admiration of uber-critic Simon Cowell, sold almost 6 million copies of her first album, “Some Hearts,” and has taken home two Grammys, two CMA awards, two People’s Choice awards, five Academy of Country Music awards, and an American Music award. But in spite of all this success at the age of 24, she wants to make it very clear that away from the stage, she is an ordinary girl: “I like to do the most normal things you can think of. I’m always cleaning my house. There’s always laundry that needs to be done. Walk my dog. Go see a movie. Go bowling. Hang out with friends. Watch football.” Underwood’s low-key persona and feel-good music make her an obvious antithesis to bad-girl contemporaries like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and even fellow “Idol” contestant Kelly Clarkson, who make waves with their multitude of media controversies. But Underwood has been careful to keep her private life (no matter how ordinary it may be) out of the spotlight, and she’s not entirely comfortable with the idea of being anyone’s role model. “The whole role model issue is kind of weird. What’s right for me and what’s right for you might be two different things. I don’t ever want to be a moral compass for somebody. Everybody’s got to have one of those inside themselves. There’s always going to be somebody that doesn’t like something that I do or something that I say. I try to do what I do and be me, first and foremost.” Her new album, “Carnival Ride,” seems destined to help her uphold that sparkling and genuine reputation. The first single from the album, “So Small,” seems custom-made to lift people’s spirits and bring tears to one or two eyes — including Underwood’s: “I definitely think there are certain songs that resonate in different ways with me. ‘So Small’ was one that I knew I loved. It made me want to go try to live my life a little better. It definitely means a lot when you can make people feel better and try to improve their lives for an hour or a day or a week or whatever. We’ve done a good job if we can do that.” Having the ability to improve people’s lives on a countrywide scale is a big leap for a girl who was standing in line with thousands of others for a shot at fame just a few short years ago. Underwood still seems a bit overwhelmed by the outcome of an audition that she wasn’t even sure she wanted to go on. “I didn’t really know what I expected. I honestly didn’t think I’d win. I have no idea why I tried out. It just kind of seemed like a good idea at the time. And it worked out okay. But I had no clue what to expect.” Even coming through the other side of the “Idol” factory as one of its biggest success stories, she isn’t convinced that she’d be able to judge other hopefuls taking their shot at celebrity. So, Simon, Randy and Paula don’t have to worry about Underwood stealing one of their seats. “I’d make a horrible judge. There are so many people in this world that are not technically good singers, but absolutely love to sing. To tell somebody that they shouldn’t do it anymore … I couldn’t do that. Even if they were bad, I’d say, ‘You know what? You love it, and I can tell that you love it, so you should do what makes you happy. You might not ever be famous from it, but you should definitely keep doing what you love.’” But even as one of “Idol’s” most famous alums, Underwood has managed to stay grounded and keeps a realistic outlook about how others view her, especially in her hometown. “It can be frustrating. If I want to go down to the grocery store, everybody’s so nice. But they all want to talk … for a few hours. And that’s just not possible. It’s funny that people that probably would’ve never paid attention to me before love me now.” Even Underwood’s weight-loss methods (which have been the focus of some discussion since she so successfully dropped some of her “Idol” weight) seem sensible and down-to-earth. “There’s no trick at all. I’m a fan of writing things down. The Calorie King book and website are my bible. I know exactly what I eat all the time. And I exercise, but not much.” And unlike many of today’s celebrities, Underwood is doing all the hard work on her own. “In most people’s daily lives getting a trainer and a dietitian isn’t feasible. You can do it on your own. I work out. But I’ll get on an elliptical or a treadmill and walk for 30 minutes. Doing that at the start of my day makes me feel better and gets the metabolism going. And there are other tricks I’ve learned. If you cut out all the sugary drinks in your life that have calories in them, then you lose a lot of weight.” It’s obvious that even though she takes ordinary approaches to everyday living, this girl is leading an extraordinary life — and surrounds herself with extraordinary talents. She counts among her performance partners Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Brad Paisley and Rascal Flatts. Certainly the release of “Carnival Ride” will add a new list of famous names that want to work with the youngest queen of Nashville. But Underwood has very specific ideas about the kind of performers she’d like to work with someday. “I’ve never met Dolly Parton, but I think I might get starstruck if I met her. And once upon a time, when I was about 10 years old, I told Garth Brooks that if he ever needed a duet partner, I would be willing. So, to fulfill a 10-year-old’s dream, I would definitely do that.”
