Dr. Dre Sues Death Row Over Rights to The ChronicRenowned producer Dr. Dre filed a lawsuit against Death Row Records in U.S. bankruptcy court on Wednesday (August 15) over the rights to his groundbreaking 1992 album The Chronic. According to the Associated Press, Dre is asking the court to rescind two prior agreements, made in 1992 and 1996, that first granted Death Row permission to distribute The Chronic, and later relinquished the album’s copyrights to the label. Under the 1996 agreement, he agreed to sign over the copyrights on the condition that he would continue to receive royalties. In 2000 the Aftermath boss notified Death Row that, due to their failure to pay these royalties, he was rescinding the two prior agreements and demanding the rights to the album be returned to him. Dre now claims that, because of that notice, he is once again the rightful owner of the copyrights. The suit also asserts that the Chapter 11 trustee currently overseeing the label is in the process of trying to sell the copyrights without proper permission. The lawsuit seeks a permanent injunction against Death Row and the trustee that would prevent any such sale. Dre is also asking to be paid restitution for any revenue earned by Death Row during its use of the copyrights.

Dr. Dre: 'Detox' To Be My Last AlbumDr. Dre is eyeing 2008 for his first album in seven years, "Detox," but says the project will be his last. "I think it's time to move on," he tells the Los Angeles Times, calling rhyming "a young man's game." According to Interscope, there is no firm date for the album. Whispers about "Detox" have leaked out over the years, with producer/multi-instrumentalist Mike Elizondo telling Billboard.com in 2005 that Dre was perfectly content to take his time finishing the effort. "Dre has very high standards," Elizondo said. "He wants to shock the world and put something out that no one would have ever thought possible from a hip-hop artist. He's definitely going to take his time and make sure it's right." The iconic rapper/producer made his first major public appearance in recent memory last month at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. He is devoting the next two months to working on Eminem's next album, and tells the Times anything unrelated to producing, weight training and time with his family is not on his agenda. However, there is new business to report. Dre recently inked a multi-year production pact with New Line Cinema, under which he will join longtime collaborator, director Phillip G. Atwelll, to score and possibly direct films.

Dr. Dre Seeking Death Row DocumentsDr. Dre wants to investigate Death Row Records Inc. to determine how much the record company owes him for unpaid royalties from sales of his records. Dr. Dre, whose real name is Andre Young, has already tried to sue the record label for royalties in several lawsuits. Last month, a California district court agreed to hear his appeal of the bankruptcy court's dismissal of one of those suits. In the meantime, however, Young told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Los Angeles in documents filed Tuesday that he needs to determine the value of a claim he holds against Death Row for unpaid royalties accruing after the record label's bankruptcy filing. Young is asking for permission to obtain this information under Rule 2004 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, which allows bankruptcy judges to order companies to turn over documents related to their assets, liabilities and financial affairs. The documents that Young's requesting include those with information related to contracts between him and the record label, revenue from the sale of his recordings and agreements to release his recordings as part of compilation albums. He asked the bankruptcy court to make Death Row hand over the documents on Feb. 29 and to order its representatives to be available for deposition on March 7. The dispute centers around Young's album "The Chronic," which was released in 1992. Young, who co-founded Death Row in 1991 with Marion "Suge" Knight and initially held a 50 percent ownership stake in the label, granted Death Row a license to distribute this album in exchange for royalties. In 1996, Young agreed to surrender his ownership interest in the label but retained his right to continue to receive royalties for all recordings released prior to the agreement. Young has argued that Death Row hasn't lived up to its end of the bargain and further broke the contract by granting another company distribution rights to his recordings. The court-appointed administrator running the record label's bankruptcy estate recently asked to sell Death Row's music-related assets to Warner Music Group Corp. for $25 million, subject to higher bids at auction. The sale includes "The Chronic" as well as several compilation albums featuring Dr. Dre's recordings, and Young also wants access to documents related to the marketing and sale efforts. Death Row Records filed for Chapter 11 protection in April 2006, after struggling for several years amidst Knight's stints in prison.

So, Snoop swears that the album is finished and that Dre is picking the songs and organizing the track listing.
I'll believe it when I see it, but since Portishead's Third was released 11 years after their previous album, I'm optimistic Detox will be released. :)

Snoop Dogg has confirmed his pal Dr. Dre's long-awaited new album Detox is complete, after helping to add the finishing touches.
And the Gin N' Juice hitmaker is convinced the rap mogul's first new release in nine years will put him back at the top of the hip-hop game.
Snoop reveals Dre is currently selecting tracks for the album, adding, "That record is real, it's coming... I was starting to doubt it myself and then I went up in there and he played so much music for me it knocked my head off. I see what he got them waiting for. It's on and poppin'. He got records, he got heat."

Billboard.com:
Dr. Dre: 'Detox' Due In 'November Or December' July 23, 2008
by Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
In his first interview in months, Dr. Dre says his years-in-the-works album "Detox" should be out before the end of the year.
"I'm just now -- over the last couple of months -- starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it," the rapper/producer told USA Today. "In a perfect world, I'm shooting for a November or December release."
Dre is particular enthused by the drum work on the new album, most of which is derived from live instrumentation. "We have an entirely new thing going with the drums that's incredible, and we're still developing that," he said. Guest appearances are on tap from Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Nas, among others.
The artist reiterated his prior claim that after "Detox" is released, he will "become a hermit" in the studio while producing only up-and-coming acts. "All I want to do is sit in the studio with that person for a year and try to create another masterpiece," he said.

Dr. Dre's 20-Year-Old Son Found Dead
The son of hip-hop producer Dr. Dre died over the weekend, the music star's rep confirmed to PEOPLE.
Andre Young Jr., 20, was discovered "unresponsive" by his mother at his home in Woodland Hills, Calif., on Saturday morning, according to the L.A. County Coroner's office.
"Dr. Dre is mourning the loss of his son," his rep Lori Earl says in a statement. "Please respect his family's grief and privacy at this time."
Young's mother told police that she attempted to rouse her son at 10:24 a.m. on Saturday, and when she couldn't, she called paramedics. They pronounced him dead at the scene.
Young "had been out with friends" the previous night and returned home around 5:30 a.m., according to L.A. County Coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter. An autopsy was performed Monday. No foul play is expected.
Dr. Dre, whose given name is Andre Young, is one of hip-hop's most prolific musicians. After achieving national spotlight with the rap group N.W.A., Dr. Dre in 1992 released the influential CD, The Chronic, which included the Grammy-winning single "Let Me Ride."
Dr. Dre has four other children: sons Curtis, 26, Marcel, 17, and Truth, 11, and daughter Truly, 7.

Dr. Dre
"Detox" (Aftermath/ Interscope, TBA)
Hip-hop's version of "Chinese Democracy" is finally coming this year, according to increasingly reclusive rap legend Dr. Dre. It will also be the last album from Dre, who calls rhyming "a young man's game." The set, which has been in the works for nearly nine years, will have "an entirely new thing going with the drums that's incredible," Dre told USA Today, as well as guest appearances from Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and Nas, among others. Longtime collaborator Mike Elizondo says, "He wants to shock the world and put something out that no one would have ever thought possible from a hip-hop artist."

With "Crack A Bottle" advancing to #1 on the Hot 100, Dr. Dre has his first #1 hit in 13 years. That is the longest gap between #1's since Cher's "Believe".
