Omarion Opens Up The "Ice Box" singer chats with TeenPeople.com about dating, breaking up and growing up.
By Aaron Parsley Mar 23, 2007 11:00AM EDT
The phone rings and it's Omarion. He's at home in Los Angeles with his family and has some time to chat following a morning doctor's appointment. "I had to check on my eyes," he says. "I can't really see that well out of one of them." But don't worry. Turns out he's fine, although he might need glasses, he says. And he certainly didn't need 20/20 vision to complete a brand new remix of "Ice Box" with R&B superstar Usher.
"I'm really excited about [it]," the singer has said of the new version of the song, which is quickly moving up the Billboard Hot 100 chart (currently at the #12 position). "I've never done a lot of collaborations. Truthfully, artists most of the time are so busy, they never get a chance to get in the studio and be personal with a record. Myself and [Usher], we very much had a lot of creative control with each other, like, 'What do you think about this?' It wasn't like I sent him the record–he did it, and I put my part on it. This was a real collaboration. When people hear it, I hope they like it."
TeenPeople.com: You released your album 21 right before 2007. How have things been going since then? Omarion: Everything has just been wonderful. The success of the album and the success of the single "Icebox" - I'm only getting good feedback, you know? God is the greatest. So I'm really feeling happy about everything that's going on.
TeenPeople.com: The video for your hit single "Ice Box" is definitely cool. How did you come up with the concept? Omarion: I just wanted to convey my emotions about everything that I was talking about in the record. Sometimes you hear a song and you hear that's it emotional. But when you see that it's emotional it gives you more, it gives you more. It's like, "Wow he's really passionate about what he's saying."
TeenPeople.com: You cast a beautiful and familiar face as the love interest in the video. Omarion: That's Solange Knowles! She looks beautiful in that dress.
TeenPeople.com: So how did you get her into your video? Omarion: Solange and I have been friends for years–a lot of years. And that's pretty much how it all came about. She's a really good friend of mine and I asked her to be a part of the video and she said she would love to.
TeenPeople.com: I know she's taken but, you two definitely have chemistry. Omarion: Yeah, we have a lot of chemistry. Me and Solange have history.
TeenPeople.com: Have you guys dated? Omarion: No. [laughing] No. Come on! You can't ask me questions like that.
TeenPeople.com: Why not? That's what people want to know! Omarion: No. No. We're really good friends.
TeenPeople.com: Well, speaking of significant others, are you seeing anyone right now? Omarion: No. I'm very, very single.
TeenPeople.com: Are you a big dater? Omarion: Not really. I've been out with a friend or two but truthfully I'm not really big on dating. If I'm going to connect myself to a person or get to know a girl then its better to know her by just talking to her and seeing where her mind is. I'm a pretty good judge of character. I can find out within the first week or two if I'm going to like her or not.
TeenPeople.com: How do you meet women? Omarion: It's so difficult. Probably through friends. Most of the time that's what ends up happening, through friends. I get introduced.
TeenPeople.com: You've said that dating a celebrity isn't as fun as dating someone isn't famous. Omarion: Yes. That's very true.
TeenPeople.com: Why is that? Omarion: Well, once you date a celebrity, your relationship is not private in any way. I'm a romantic guy and so if I wanted to take my girlfriend out on a romantic date to the beach or just somewhere personal, if she's really, really famous there's a possibility that were going have a whole bunch of paparazzi following us. Which means we always have to be in a community like with gates or a door closed. We can't really go and see the stars. We would have to do something or spend some extravagant money to really have personal time.
TeenPeople.com: Are there any celebrity women worth the drama? Omarion: Of course. For a little while, and this may sound funny but I really had a big crush on Rachel McAdams. I think she has the most adorable smile and the dimples. She's a really pretty girl.
TeenPeople.com: "Ice Box" is about the bad side of relationships. Is it based on personal experience? Omarion: Well, yeah. I recently went through being in a relationship for three-and-a-half years. And now, being separated from that person, it's funny all the things that you go through. But being young and immature sometimes can mess up a relationship. That can really affect your personality and the person that you're going to become. For me, more than anything, with my maturity and growing up now, it's okay to say how I feel. It's okay to feel. Most guys don't like talking about being in love or they don't really say, "I really love that girl." Most guys would be like "I don't care about her." I think it's really, really important to be mature and grow up and just be honest with your feelings. Like the record said, "Girl, I really want to work this out but I'm tired of fighting and I really hope you still want me the same way I want you."
TeenPeople.com: You mentioned how you've grown up and matured–and you're 22 now. But your album is called 21. Omarion: Well, yeah. But 21 is a milestone in everyone's life. And anyone that's under-21 wants to be 21. Anyone that is over 21 remembers what it was like being 21. And it's blackjack!
TeenPeople.com: It is. What did you do to celebrate turning 21? Omarion: I went straight to Vegas. I was on the tables. I did my thing. You know what I'm saying?
TeenPeople.com: For kids who aren't 21 yet, but maybe want to go out and party and stuff, is it worth it to wait? Omarion: It's definitely worth it to wait. You think that when you get to 18 and you want to go out–and there are 18-and-up clubs and everything, but it's nothing like being a 21. I'll say, "Just wait to do it right."

He's torn between the 3rd single: it'll either be "Midnight" or "Beg For It".

He needs a 2nd single fast. O sold at least 600k off the strength of 2 singles. This one didn't start off too bad, but it is fizzling too fast and it needs some immediate resuscitation.

He and his label are still stuck between releasing "Midnight" and "Beg For It". They need to decide by the end of this month for real.

"Beg for It" is way underperforming. I don't think they should waste the money on a video. They should have went for Midnight, that would have been a slow burner but would have helped the album in the long run. It would have made a hot video as well.

Sometimes, that's a problem that is run into. His CD is decent, but the only true stand-out is Icebox. Your heater single can't be the only strong song on a CD. He needed more hard-hitting cuts.

O and his label have opted to shoot a video for the remix to "Beg For It". It has a high-profile guest on it but O won't reveal who yet. And he's still looking at concepts but shooting is set to begin the first real week in June.
