Billboard.com:
Monica Gets Busy On Sixth Album
December 15, 2008
by Hillary Crosley, N.Y.
Monica is hard at work on her as-yet-untitled sixth album for J Records, which she announced in a recent YouTube clip.
The singer said the album, whose name is floating between "Lesson Learned" and "Still Standing," will be released in the first quarter of 2009. "As soon as you throw up some confetti, your girl will be on shelves," she said.
One track already completed is "Trust," a duet with Keyshia Cole. Monica has also collaborated with producers like Stargate and Bryan Michael-Cox and is looking forward to working with Missy Elliott.
The new album follows 2006's "The Makings of Me," which has sold 314,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan

Well, the first single should be coming soon then if she'll be on shelves after we "throw up some confetti."

Monica has a way better chance at coming back than Brandy. Unlike Brandy, Monica understands her audience and isn't about to pander to Becky.

I think Brandy's audience was always a bit larger and more diverse than Monica's at their peaks. But I dont think either of them will ever do much again. it's sad cause they are both more talented than majority of these newer female artists.

Monica's voice has gotten stronger over the years, the girl is unstoppable, probably the best live female singer we have right now

She's good but Monica would murder her on stage if these two had a showdown for real, I'm talking about singing singing, not that poppy sh!t

Monica's vocals have been less than impressive on her last few albums. I hope she steps it up this time.

Yes. She just hasn't been recording songs like "For You I Will" lately to show her voice, but her live performances have been incredible. Her voice is better than ever.

LOL. Monica made a FOOL of Brandy. I think Brandy is [still] intimidated by her. She was going for the "I love her and we are friends" performance and Monica was going for the "fuck that bitch, lemme get my shine on" performance. Brandy prolly didn't wanna get hit with that glock!! :o :o :o

It is and just lately I noticed how incredible she is of a singer, I mean I have always been a fan of hers but never took notice of the texture and tone of her voice. I think her vocals are at top notch form right now, I have seen her live in which she was good back then but these latest performances are on all new level right now. I'm very impressed with her, I hope she brings this with the new album.

Yea she has a great voice but she hasnt don herself any justice on her albums. She really dumbed her voice down on the albums.

I think it has more to do with the state of Urban radio when Monica released her past two albums. She and her label knew radio wasn't looking for another "Why I Love You So Much" or "For You I Will," so they put more focus on giving her hot production than having her do the big ballads. Look at Jennifer Hudson. She's got the biggest vocals out of anybody on Urban radio, and she got herself a #1 with a song where she wasn't really using those vocals. With the success Keyshia Cole has had with her ballads though, I think Monica could go and do a ballad with big vocals and get some love though. Just as long as she doesn't put out something really pop. She should put out a Keyshia type of ballad.

Just as long as she doesn't put out something really pop. She should put out a Keyshia type of ballad. Thats the exact reason why she flopped because they were not doing what Monica always did. Following the tends of urban radio got her nowhere and caused her to flop. She should have been doing those ballads all along and singing her heart out. thats what people expect from her, not "I cant who im is when they play my shit." Now, some1 like Keyshia Cole has filled that void for the moment and I really doubt if Monica is going to ever get back to that spot again. I think she may get another "hit" along the lines of "u shoulda known better" but she wont get back to where she used to be.

To be fair, she had plenty of uptempo hits in her career too. They tried to find a happy median between her uptempos and ballads and make it current. That worked wonders when she released "So Gone," which became the #1 song at Urban radio for all of 2003. Then she decided to release that song twice more, with less success each time. Yes, she also had major Urban success with "U Should've Known Better," but that song wasn't in the style of her usual ballads. I don't really blame her album for not releasing caterwauling pop ballads like "For You I Will". That wouldn't have flown any more than anything else she's released.

Out of all the washed up R&B singers of her era, I think Monica stands the best chance at bouncing back. She's never really been a major crossover act, and she's never really wanted to be. And she really hasn't done anything to make people lose interest in her (other than toss out bad singles). I would even go as far as saying out of her peers, (Brandy, Mya, etc) she's probably the more respected one out the bunch. "Everytime Tha Beat Drop" did fairly well considering how bad it was. She really just needs the right single.
