MTV Moves Video Music Awards To L.A.June 23, 2008 , 1:15 PM ET The MTV Video Music Awards are going Hollywood. After broadcasting from Las Vegas last year, the awards will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Sept. 7. MTV said it plans for the first time to enlist its Web-savvy, youthful audience to help decide the nominees. The network intends to take over the movie studio's lot and present the awards show from sound stages, rooftops and city streets. MTV and Paramount are corporate cousins within Viacom Inc. "With Paramount Pictures as the ideal setting, the glamour and musical heritage of L.A. are sure to be catalysts for creating explosive pop culture moments that the VMAs are known for," Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, said in a statement. September's VMAs - which will mark the show's 25th year - has a tough act to follow after last year's drama-filled extravaganza at the Palms Casino Resort. The Vegas edition delivered one of the most-talked about performances in recent history: Britney Spears' reviled comeback performance in which the pop star appeared nervous, out-of-shape and just plain out-of-it on stage. There was also an off-camera fight between Pamela Anderson exes Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, and more divalike behavior from Kanye West, who threw a tantrum in front of media and crew backstage because he lost all five categories for which he was nominated. It's been a decade since MTV last televised the VMAs in Los Angeles. In recent years, the show has been presented from Miami and MTV's home base of New York. This year's host, nominees and slate of performers will be announced at a later date. www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003819709

They should just stop doing this show.
MTV is only doing it this year because it is the 25th anniversary of the first show.

THIS IS HORRIBLE!!
WHY CAN'T THEY JUST HAVE THE AWARDS IN A FREAKING ARENA LIKE THE USED TOO!!! WHY DOES IT NEED TO BE ALL OVER THE FUCKING PLACE!!
I'm sorry, this just pisses me off...VMA's used to be somethin you looked foward to. I REALLY HOPE Britney doesn't come this year...1) MTV doesn't desearve the ratings. 2)MTV doesn't desearve her.. Another low budget MTV VMA'S!

And they're prolly sooo proud of themselves that this happened, thinking how SHOCKING it all is...PUH LEESE! Take me back to 2000, kthanks.

I wish they would do it with one stage and have whatever committee they used to have decide the nominees and winners with the same VIDEO categories they used to have. Last year's show was embarrassing. 03 was the last good one.

After the trainwreck of awards last year, I can honestly say I won't be watching the awards this year. MTV has gone down in quality so bad! The programming now is hideous... retarded dating shows on repeat 80% of the day and TRL which was the only music program has also gone down in quality dramatically.
What's wrong with MTV? I rather watch TLC more these days, lmfao.

^^It's NOT going to get a grand stage! They'll be ALL OVER freakin production studios, giving out awards on soundstages and rooftops. Where are they gonna have the performances, in the back parking lot? I swear, I REALLY wanna see how bad the public wants to tune into this crap sans Britney...I HOPE a drastic ratings drop from 2 years ago (the one Brit DIDN'T atttend) and hopefully that will send a message to MTV that they aren't doing something right (the ratings have been decreasing since the 2003 show, obviously!)

I haven't enjoyed a single one of these since the one that happened on 9.9.99. that show had so many awesome performances (The Aerosmith/Run DMC/Kid Rock one sticks out in my mind). oh yeah, also, Chris Rock hosting!

I would hope Ms. Spears wouldn't be part of the show- another trainwreck in her life, she doesn't need (since it's been pretty quiet on the Britney Trainwreck front). Then again, with or without her, theVMAs have been pretty lackluster for years. Only when Madge performs is there some kind of excitement, really, and understandably so. She'll be on tour at the time, so chalk up another dull VMAs.
Are the categories gonna be normal again, or the crappy ones thay had last year?

VMA in early 2000s was great but in recent years so bad. Last year was the worst and many categories last year were so weird. MTV should make great show this year or nobody will watch this show anymore.

^^WHat made 04 so special? IMO, it was the 1st VMA's where I thought it was....lacking...the 1st VMA show where nothin like SPECTACULAR happened (unless you call seeing Jessica Simpson on a swing "spectacular"). There were talks to tone down EVERYTHING MTV put out after the Janet Superbowl incident...

I was just going to say the same thing! 2003 was the last time they had that classic stage format with the audience... After that they tried to change it up every year and it just didn't work. The set up for last year was TERRIBLE. They need to go back to their roots and keep it simple. This whole performing and presenting in random places is pointless and makes the show seem unorganized. They also need to go back to the classic categories they used to have. Monster Single of the Year? Earth-Shattering Collaboration? WTF is that? Where was Best Pop Video? Best Dance Video? Best Rock Video? Best Female Video? MTV really got it wrong last year.

It's soon going to be worse than the Muchmusic Awards , maybe they should take some pointers from BET; they seem to always put on a good show!

Im glad its coming to LA this year again! The idea of rooftops and stuff is retarded! They should do it in just an arena with how many ever stages they want but inside the same place, not from place to place.
Yea the VMA's are not what they used to... depending on nominees and performances I'll see if I'll watch or just record for 1-2 performances I would like.
Yea NO Britney!!!

I remember watching the show ALL THE WAY TO THE VERY LAS SECOND waiting and waiting in excruciating pain from sunburn and the show itself ( ) for them to say Brits name....alas!

I hope britney is not going to be there. What a disaster. I would love for once to see good performances-- which do not include britney.

Performance wise, I would like to see: - PCD and Danity Kane to collaborate and to perform a medley - Rihanna to premiere her first single from her next album - Christina to premiere her first single from her next album - Lance Bass to sing "I Kissed a Girl" - Miley Cyrus to perform her next single from 'Breakout' Of course this is all wishful thinking.

*dead*
I've always thought "I Kissed A Girl" was a gay guy's anthem. Since they have a tendency of getting trashed and making out with fruit flies.
Usher needs to drop the grandfather dance moves and perform "This Ain't Sex" in prime form.

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES -- MTV isn't ruling out giving viewers more Britney Spears at this year's Video Music Awards. "Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group, playfully told The Associated Press during a telephone interview Friday. When asked if he was just joking, Toffler said "sorta." "Who knows?" he said. Spears' out-of-it "Gimme More" comeback performance during last year's MTV Video Music Awards at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas was one of the most talked about televised moments of 2007. The drama-filled VMAs drew 7.1 million viewers, according to Nielsen Media Research. Another Spears redux could equal even more eyeballs. "I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show," said Toffler. "We are working on it every minute of every day." This year's MTV Video Music Awards will air live from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles on Sept. 7. (MTV and Paramount are corporate cousins within Viacom Inc.) Toffler said the award show's performances will occur on the lot's various sound stages, rooftops and faux city streets. "The backlot gives us versatility," said Toffler. "You can do street performances, on-top-of-building performances, on-the-side-of-a-building performances, inside-of-a-studio performances, so we're pretty excited." www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/st....b=Entertainment

You know, those suggestions aren't too bad! Like, MTV has ALSO lost it's humor side, imo...like their little sketches they used to do (I'm talkin about the whole Lance Bass thing). I also think Eminem should open the show with HIS first single.
