Does anyone know when was the last time he missed the top ten and/or the top twenty at country radio before this?

Does anyone know when was the last time he missed the top ten and/or the top twenty at country radio before this? His previous single, "Learning How To Bend", also missed the top 10 (it peaked at #13). His last single to miss the top 20 was "Lovin' You Against My Will", which peaked at #34 back in 2000. I'll never understand why that song underperformed so badly. It and "She's So California" are Gary's only singles to make the top 40 but miss the top 20 (he had a number of early singles miss the top 40 entirely).

I completely agree with you about LYAMW. That is still one of my favorite Gary Allan songs. How that song and Smoke Rings In The Dark could both fail to become big hits is still a big disappointment to me.
I would love to see the label go ahead and release Half Of My Mistakes, which I think would go T10, but it may indeed be time to move on to a new album. Either way, I hope Gary's next single is back to the high quality standards that I have come to expect from Gary.

I assume a few stations played it as an album track and never did pick up Lovin' You as a consequence. Eventually LYAMW stalled and Right Where was then released, and it worked its way all the way to #5. I could be wrong about the cause-and-effect here but this is how I've always thought it happened. 48 weeks is still the longest run this side of the 1950's.

Gary has been doing a new song called (I believe) Today at his most recent shows. I'm not sure if he's saying it will be the new single, or a single at some point, but he says it will be on his new album, whenever that's released. So that's probably another indication the label is done with Living Hard. And the good news is that Today is more like the older-sounding Gary. It would fit in perfectly on the See If I Care CD, which was released in 2003.
I know this is beating a dead horse, but I really wish they had released Like It's A Bad Thing in place of either Learning How To Bend or (especially) She's So California. It's a GREAT song and I believe would have done better than either of those at radio.
I also love LYAMW. It's a great song and shows off his vocals very well. And Zazie, I had never thought about that before, but you're probably right about LYAMW stalling when Right Where I Need To Be was released. Wonder why the label did that and didn't allow LYAMW to move up before they released "Right." I also didn't realize that RWINTB had spent that much time on the charts until I got the most recent Joel Whitburn Country Songs book. I guess that just proves what we already know... that Gary's songs tend (most of them anyway) to move up the charts slowly and stay there a long time.
As a long-time Gary fan, I'm looking forward to new (and BETTER) music from him on the next CD. Was very disappointed in Living Hard.

I enjoyed your post and look forward to more. Here's what I think happened with LYAMW and RWINTB. Once in a while an album track gets some real, or perhaps orchestrated, buzz? It happened with Amazed and with How Do You Like Me Now, and in both of those cases the label pulled the single that had already been released and rushed those hot songs out to radio. (Worked out pretty well.) I think the same thing happened, at a somewhat lower level, with RWINTB -- but the label did not pull the already-released song. They let it have its run, but some stations insisted on playing RWINTB and therefore the earlier song ran out of steam at #37. I don't know exactly when RW was released, but I think the label showed great patience with LY and let it have about as much of a run as it could get. By the way, Billboard switched from a 75-position chart to its present 60-position chart part of the way through RW's run. Wouldn't have made it for 48 weeks had the chart been only 60 positions. And I am a little disappointed with Gary's current album myself. It's got quite a few songs I don't care much about. But I never mind Gary going off in whatever unexpected direction he wants. I would have liked Airplanes/Mistakes/Bad Thing as the 3 singles, though.

I'm not terribly surprised that this song tanked. I thought it was his weakest single since "Tough Little Boys", which is probably the only single release of his that I didn't like.* It was just so unlike him to do a "OMG I'm such a sensitive guy, look at me crying over my family" song.
This song did grow on me after a while. I've already said several times why I didn't like this song, and I hope to never hear another California song again. Almost every California song seems to do nothing but rehash: Hollywood & Vine, Sunset Strip, earthquakes, wildfires, street cars, Rice-a-Roni, upscale shopping, glitz and glamour everywhere, terminus of the old Route 66, I met 5 celebrities at Ralph's supermarket and then 3 more at Longs Drugs, blah blah blah, yakkidy smakkidy. Enough already.
*I don't know "Loving You Against My Will", "From Where I'm Sitting", "No Man in His Wrong Heart" or "I'll Take Today".

I have to chuckle, because if you don't care for Tough Little Boys, you're probably not going to like Today, the new song he's been singing in shows. Even Gary says it's sappy, but he also says he thinks it will be a hit. Thanks Zazie for the kind words. I love coming to the board to read, but when I post, I usually try to stick to topics I think I can really add something to. I did go back and check, and you're right. LYAMW debuted on Billboard April 1, 2000, as the third single from the Smoke Rings CD (the song Smoke Rings and Runaway were the first two). Three weeks later, on April 22, RWINTB debuted. LYAMW peaked at 34 and lasted 20 weeks; RWINTB peaked at 5 and lasted 48. There are a lot of Gary fans who would agree about Half Of My Mistakes as a single they wish Gary had released, because it's a good COUNTRY sounding song. And I think a lot are disappointed that Bad Thing wasn't released. I know the label has the final say, but I'm not sure how much input Gary has in which singles are released. I know he loves SSC and has said the fan reaction at shows has been tremendous. Somehow, that didn't translate to it flying up the charts, though. It's hard to judge off of one new song, but here's hoping Gary's next CD comes back around to the Gary who made six (plus a greatest hits CD) solid albums before the mess I call Living Hard. sigh
