The current crop of new females just aren't making music that the format's core audience can relate to, as numerous consultants, PDs, and researchers have told Lon Helton in recent issues of Country Aircheck. The format is having a heck of a time trying to please three very different listening cells; adults 18-49, women 35-44 (#1 core audience demo for thirteen years), and adults 25-54. It's still the most-listened to format out there (seventeen years and counting), and that's not too shabby either. I'll concede Darius two weeks at #1, and possibly three. I think one of the main reasons Darius Rucker has been able to defy all odds and make an unexpected comeback like this on a whole new format is because he has the voice and artistic personality to bridge these various demographic audiences and please every one of the three in some way. Darius Rucker is in his forties now, so he's essentially almost exactly at the mean country listening demographic age of roughly 45. Thus, he has already won over many around his age. Moreover, many who listen to Darius Rucker's music now are the same people who grew up listening to Hootie & The Blowfish during their high school/college years (think about the particularly enthusiastic responses he gets playing a solo version of "Hold My Hand" and "Let Her Cry" in concert, in-between his new country songs) so he also benefits by having at least some of the younger demographics covered. In contrast, the reason other artists who have attempted a crossover haven't been quite as successful (Jessica Simpson, Bon Jovi, Jewel) is because, while they may appeal strongly to a third of the core country demographic, they just don't charm the other two-thirds to at least a respectably similar effect. Of course much of it has to do with the fact that Rucker is most fortunate to be on a powerful label, while the other three are not exactly as fortunate in that regard, but I really do think Darius Rucker instinctively knows how to bridge these demographics. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

It will stay there for a while too. I mean Darius still has a HUGE lead on anyone below him. In my opinion, 4 weeks at #1 is very possible right now. It should be at least a three week #1 hit.

Wow. I wonder what his odds are at a third #1 after this? (Has anyone ever led their career off with 3 straight #1's? I think Joe Diffie's first four singles, or at least first three, were all #1 on the old R&R.)

IIRC, Clint's first two singles wound up #1 and #2 for the year at BB in 1989, enabling him to finish #1 among the year's top new singles artist, followed by Garth Brooks & Lorrie Morgan.

Carrie of course still has her streak of 9 8 in a row since her career debut, but I don't think her second single made it to #1 on the Billboard chart.

^ The nine mentioned in AI includes Inside Your Heaven which was number one on the Hot 100 because of single sales after she won the show..

I'm so happy that IWBLTFL is number one on the country charts this week. I agree although I wish people would stop writing titles of songs on message boards like they would texting. I mean typing "IWBLTFL" isn't much shorter than typing the whole "It Won't Be Like This For Long" title. Guess that's just the English teacher in me.

This song slowly grabbed onto me.. and now it won't let go. I just think the lyrics are very true to life. The writer's obviously had a message they wanted to portray and they didn't try to go over the top with cliches or fancy lyrics to send it. A very well done song and a very well delivered vocal. Darius definitely deserved this #1, if not just for recording and releasing a great song.

Wow. I wonder what his odds are at a third #1 after this? If he releases All I Want as the next single (or even Learn To Live), I'd say the odds are pretty good. That song is better than either of his first two singles.

That song is better than either of his first two singles. The title track has #1 written all over it. "All I Want" I'm less sure about, which I'm sure will chart respectably but probably would have to settle for a Top Five peak. "Alright" could also top the chart potentially I believe, although I hope that isn't released as that is the worst track on the album in that, aside from the lame lyrics, Rucker's vocals don't deliver in a way like he does in his first two singles. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if "I Hope They Get To Me In Time" gets released instead over "Alright"in that musically it's quite similar to "It Won't Be Like This For Long" and lyrically will hit home to many. Sincerely, Noah Eaton

The previous speculation was that All I Want would be the 3rd single, but I think either would be very well. I personally prefer Learn To Live (it's my fave on the album), but All I Want does have the Paisley factor, so I assume it will be a single at some point.

oh dear. not this topic again lol. DFTRM hit #1 on Radio&Records but #2 on Billboard. most Carrie fans still consider it a #1 hit though. so it depends on how you consider it. it could be 7 #1s or 8 consecutive #1s.
i consider DFTRM a #1 because it did hit #1 on an official chart, just not Billboard.

But "Don't Forget To Remember Me" hit number 2, didn't it? yeah that was her second single i was talking about...but i agree that it was a #1 hit on a major chart and a multi week #1 on the radio countdowns that i listen to.

Wow, this is still climbing. It definitely has a chance at getting 4 weeks at #1. I like Darius and I like the song so that prospect gets a YAY from me.
If this does get 4 weeks, I wonder if George will be able to hang on and steal a one-week #1 before Taylor takes over. Will repeated "Power up!" ads for at least 2 more weeks do the job? Right now, I'm thinking not. "River of Love" has already had a few instances of dying down and being resuscitated. The CPR can only last so long.

I think it's unlikely, but today's MB update showed George is still alive, catching up to and passing Taylor with his best day of the week. So maybe he's starting a 3-week move.
But he's just finishing his 20th chart week, and asking for 4 more bullets seems to be too much.
It's nice to see a song capable of breaking through the 2-week limitation that has lasted since last June, and I do think we've got one.

My guess would still be 3 or 4 weeks at the top, and then Taylor takes over the reign. It will be interesting because Rascal Flatts, Rodney, Tim, Carrie, John Rich, Keith, and Brad will be close behind at that point. Somebody will have to be left out, but it'll probably be back to the 1 - 2 week #1 surges for a little while again.

Does he have any song he always performs that is probably the third single? I'm hoping for Forever Road.

I'm predicting a total of five singles will be released from this album, and they will be released in the following order and peak in the following positions:
*
1: "Don't Think I Don't Think About It": #1 2: "It Won't Be Like This For Long": #1 3: "All I Want": #3 4: "Learn To Live": #1 5: "I Hope They Get To Me In Time": #2
*
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

"White Horse" is coming on faster than i expected - and this is losing spins fast - so it may barely get to stay 3 weeks in the #1 spot.
