NEW YORK - (Business Wire) Big Machine country singing sensation Taylor Swift, who recently achieved the rare milestone of spending 8 weeks atop the Billboard 200 top albums chart (only 5 other albums have done so since 2000) for her smash sophomore album Fearless, is now rewriting the record books at pop radio. The 19 year old country prodigy’s first single from her new album, “Love Story,†became the first ever country crossover recording to hit #1 on the Nielsen BDS CHR/Top 40 chart, which appears in industry leading trade publications Radio & Records and Billboard, in the 16-year history of list, as well as #1 on the Mediabase Top 40 Chart, which appears in the national newspaper, USA Today. “It really is a testament to the popularity of this young woman and the music she creates,†stated Silvio Pietroluongo, Director of Charts, R&R and Billboard. “History has shown that top 40 radio is accepting of country music and its artists when programmers are bold enough to expand their musical boundaries, though this level of success is unprecedented over the past two decades. Taylor Swift has certainly earned her place as the first country act to top R&R and Billboard’s Nielsen BDS-based CHR/Top 40 chart as she is the epitome of a multi-format, multi-talented artist.†Mediabase President, Rich Meyer commented, "to call this event extraordinary would be an understatement. With the diverse nature of radio formats in today's landscape, this is truly an amazing accomplishment. Taylor Swift is a rock star. This is the first time a Country artist of any kind (male, female, or group) has had a #1 song at Top 40 - dating back to the 90's when we began monitoring airplay. If you look at this decade, only a few dozen songs of any kind have achieved 9000 spins in a week at Top 40 and Taylor has one of those." www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/taylor-swift-sets-historic-top-40-radio-milestone-for-country-artist,719640.shtml

Mmmmm.... exaggerated much? The 19 year old country prodigy's :o first single from her new album, “Love Story,†became the first ever country crossover recording to hit #1 on the Nielsen BDS CHR/Top 40 chart (...) “History has shown that top 40 radio is accepting of country music and its artists when programmers are bold enough to expand their musical boundaries ( and labels are smart enough to twist the song a bit for Rhythmic stations to play them too?) (...) Mediabase President, Rich Meyer commented, " ... Taylor Swift is a rock star (hahaaaaa LOL) (...) If you look at this decade, only a few dozen songs of any kind have achieved 9000 spins in a week at Top 40 and Taylor has one of those ( ??? mmmmmmm... does he know the panel has changed and now it is almost the norm to have songs reaching #1 with over 9K spins) I'm super happy for Taylor and have celebrated her #1 BUT I don't like it when commentators/critics/"experts" exaggerate accomplishments, especially when they KNOW the charts very well

Actually, country did music did much better at top 40 radio back in the eighties (and in previous decades) because the format had much wider appeal than it does these days for most of that decade until the explosion of rap & hip-hop drove millions of adults and their kids from the format.
The CHR/Pop panel size has plunged over the past twenty years for that exact reason, but that gruesome remix constitutes a major league sellout; if the original version had been a smash with the 12-17 and 12-24 core audiences of today's CHR/Pop stations, then Ms. Swift's label execs would really have something to beat their chests about.
LA is getting a new top 40 radio station this Friday (Amp 97.1 is the handle) to take on KIIS; it'll be interesting to see which version of 'Love Story' they'll choose to play, or if they'll play it at all.

The CHR/Pop panel size has plunged over the past twenty years for that exact reason It's def. split into CHR, Hot AC, and Rhythmic (so still about the same total # of stations I think)...but creation of HAC and Rhythmic def. accounts for the drop in CHR panel size Thinkin you'll prob. be much happier with the new CHR in L. A. (since they've already said its slogan is "all the hits")

I'll definitely give it a shot; 2007 & 2008 were exceptional years for top 40 radio, but you'd never know it by listening to KIIS, WKSC, or numerous other alleged top 40 stations.

Yeah luckily the number of CHRs like that is basically down to four I think (L. A., San Diego, Chicago, and Detroit)...the other three markets (besides L. A.) have all tried mainstream CHR and the stations failed for some reason - but hopin L. A.'s new station'll get decent ratings

I think it just worked perfectly in time for Hot AC, AC, Pop in their peak, and some Country spins here in there (probably some Rhythmic with the remix, too, or not??) G-R-E-A-T job Taylor!

If Taylor's label went for the peak route, instead of the longetivity route than they would have released this to pop at the same time as country and she would've been #1 on the Hot 100 Airplay. Oh well, this did amazing

Hit #1 on ARC Weekly Top 40. Didn't think it would happen. It just might have blocked Circus from hitting #1 (I expect Gives You Hell to rise 3-1 next week). www.rockonthenet.com/charts/arc.htm
