Debut album from PopJustice-approved New Zealand electro-pop artist Pip Brown. The album's good, IMO. She sounds like Santogold's musical sister. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. It was released today in the UK. Her voice reminds me of Lovefoxxx.

I'm kind of obsessed with this album. "Magic", "Crazy World", and "Morning Dreams" rock my socks.

"Danny And Jenny" needs to get on Gossip Girl somehow. Oh - and thank you, Adam. Consider me inspired. Ladyhawke has acquired climber status in the fashion realm, as well. Not only were her songs prevalent on the catwalk, but she was at a lot of the shows. Hmmm....

Overall, the album's not as strong as I would like it to be, but "My Delirium" is a certified jam.

The album retreads its own territory too many times, but there's about 5 or 6 really strong songs. Overall, I'd give it a B or B+. That said, I'm enjoying it on a level beyond what it deserves.

The album is dull and when it's finally through with, I'm entirely unmoved. She does absolutely nothing for me.

It's by no means a perfect album, but for all its flaws, it still delivers a punch. Maybe I should say "oh, maybe this album actually sucks, maybe I just like it for personal reasons", but I don't think so. I wasn't predisposed to like this album; I went into my first listen free of any prior judgments. And I liked it. Plenty of people lstill ike it. Then again, plenty of people like that wretched Crystal Castles album, and I loathe it, the same way I loathe the members of the band. I guess it just comes down to personal preference in both cases. We're not saving lives here. These are just dance albums that will be soon forgotten. But, as ephemeral pleasures go, you could do far worse than Pip Brown's snappy nuggets of synth pop.
Ladyhawke performs what I consider to be a more accessible version of the template Glassy Candy, Chromatics, and the whole Italians Do It Better coterie sketched out not long ago, glossified and mixed with a bit of CSS's shortlived charm. Her album is essentially a compilation of what the past 8 years of electro styling - in all its permutations - has sounded like: spunky, kittenish 80s-indebted pop. "Magic", "Danny And Jenny", and "My Delirium" epitomize the album at its best.

'dare you take a dig at my beloved Crystal Castles?! I live for them (yet I fear even stepping foot into any one their gigs).
Certainly this is all subjective but I can also positively say that, like with every other album, I too was free of any prior criticism. It just chugged along, with each track's simple & similar structuring (which is fine by me), not once getting a hold of my attention. It is "just another dance album" & she is what she intends to be but I couldn't stomach what I listened to.

I like what Crystal Castles stand for in theory, but I find their execution hackneyed and thoroughly unappetizing. Plus, Alice Glass is an extremely grating vocal and theatrical presence. She couldn't steal any more from Siouxsie's stage antics if she tried (I've got the photos to prove it, as I was an unlucky witness to one of their early gigs in 2007). To add insult to injury, they shop at American Apparel and use strobelights as visual assault weapons: how much more gimmicky can you get? See, I would understand if you stated that Ladyhawke's formula falls flat; I even will attest that the album comes to close to buckling under its own weight. But to not be able to even stomach her music? That seems such an extreme reaction. I've only had that reaction this year to one band -- the war criminals known as Telepathe.

But I expect nothing less of them. Let us have a look at their fanbase (...). As for "Siouxsie swagger jacking", be proud! She has a lengthy legacy to admire (rhythmless arm-swaying & all). Can you really blame Alice? If theft were truly the case here, let's scold Polly Jean and countless others while we're at it. What can I say, I have a weak stomach? Although I surely didn't imply for it to be that extreme, not everything does it for me; including Telepathe. Chrome's On It remixes are ace though. ;)

"Magic" reminds me of "Enjoy the Silence". And it features a sample from Garbage's "Queer"!

She's re-releasing "Paris Is Burning" on March 2. It originally peaked at #61 in the UK in July of last year.
