www.rap-up.com/2010/04/29/exclusive-shakira-returns-to-studio-for-edgy-dance-album/EXCLUSIVE: SHAKIRA RETURNS TO STUDIO FOR EDGY, DANCE ALBUMLess than six months after releasing her English album She Wolf, Shakira is back at work on her next project, Rap-Up.com has exclusively learned. Producer Jim Jonsin (T.I., Beyoncé) and songwriter Rico Love (Usher, Diddy) were in the studio with the Colombian bombshell earlier this month. “I worked with Shakira a few weeks ago in Miami. We did two sessions together,” Rico told Rap-Up TV. “She’s working on another album.” Fans of the “Gypsy” can expect to see her shake her famous hips once again with the new music, which Rico described as having a “more pop, edgy” sound. “She wanted to really dance on this record and do what made her famous in America, a ‘Whenever, Wherever’-type vibe,” he revealed. Despite her global superstar status, there were no diva antics in the lab. “She’s really a sweetheart. We got along really good,” said Rico. “She understands what she wants, she knows her strong points, and she demands that.” On July 11, Shakira will perform “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” the official song of 2010 FIFA World Cup, at the closing ceremony before the FIFA World Cup Final at Johannesburg Soccer City Stadium in South Africa.

sports.yahoo.com/soccer/blog/sow_experts/post/Shakira-s-World-Cup-song-isn-t-going-over-so-gre?urn=sow,238407 Mon May 03, 2010 Shakira's World Cup song isn't going over so greatBy Brooks Peck With all the problems facing this summer's World Cup in South Africa, the last thing it needed was trouble over something as silly as the tournament's official anthem, but that's exactly what Shakira's "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" is causing among South Africans and many others who have endured it. The song hit radio stations last week, with Johannesburg locals responding with comments like "It's horrible" and "How is Shakira going to sing the African part of it?" (My guess is with her voice, but a Speak & Spell could be a fun choice, too.) The Colombian singer collaborated with South African band Freshlyground on the track, which borrows from a Cameroonian song called "Zangalewa." But the fact that the anthem for South Africa's World Cup is not being sung by a South African is the sticking point for the critics who aren't just opposed to the new tune itself. This isn't even the first time this World Cup's organizers have been given headaches over their musical selection, though. The tournament's kickoff concert that will take place the night before matches begin on June 11 was also criticized for featuring too many foreign acts like the Black Eyed Peas, Alicia Keys and John Legend and not local musicians. The organizing committee eventually bowed to the complaints and made the lineup more "representative." Shakira is scheduled to perform "Waka Waka" with Freshlyground in front of 94,000 people at the final match on July 11. That should be interesting. Even more interesting? The actual tournament.

That controversy regarding the song is ridiculous. Don't they understand the publicity they get for the World Cup from having a star of Shakira's stature singing the theme song? I know it's a big sporting event, but honestly, I wouldn't have even paid attention this year if I didn't like Shakira's song.

Shakira is one of the most well known celebrities in the entire world and considering this is the World Cup, it makes sense that they would have a well known person doing the song. If it's some weird South African band, who knows how many more people would be offended. Shakira has already proven to be accepted on a global scale. The local bands? There's a reason they're local. What a bunch of 'tards.

What a bunch of 'tards. What you're saying makes sense, but I can also see it from the perspective of South Africans who would probably like some international exposure for their local artists. Not to mention that it's a little rich to have a South American person singing a song about Africa. Africa and its many countries in general don't get a whole lot of positive press. Most we hear about in other countries is all about wars and famines, mostly just the bad stuff, so I can see how people would be a little upset at a song that supposed to be about Africa being sung by someone who's not remotely African when there are some 700 million+ Africans who aren't singing the song.

Terrible reception for this song here in Venezuela. I don't really like it either. Radios are holding on to Gitana as much as they can. I hope the video makes up for the bad song, as she always does great videos.

Waka Waka is kinda terrible. Sounds like a Disney song, and not even good enough for the Lion King. Bitch needs a spanish album asap.

^Agreed. Sad for this era, such a solid, fun album. Dance-y, but in a more organic way than, say, Gaga.

^Agreed. Sad for this era, such a solid, fun album. Dance-y, but in a more organic way than, say, Gaga. Well, there's Waka Waka coming up along with a completely new album, so there's still plenty of Shakira coming up. It did suck though that SW (the album) didn't perform well in the US. As a fan, I enjoyed the era since we got lots of interviews, photoshots, videos and tons of live performances. The upcoming tour is likely going to be a huge production. They've been planning the tour for almost a whole year, and they've been working on the stage a very long time.
