Wow, he actually came up with a new rhythm. I'm digging this. Sure, it's slick and poppy, but he sings the hell out of it and the lyrics are solid. I really liked Love, Pain & the whole crazy thing, as I thought it finally showcased his musical talents to their fullest. Previously, he felt like he had been trying to play it too safe and just kept recycling the same grooves and lyrics over and over again. On LP&twct, however, every song sounded fresh, his voice was stronger, and as bombastic as the production was, it never felt overdone to me. (Which is strange, since Dann Huff usually overproduces everything into a cold bland mess.) Even if the lyrics weren't always top-notch, there was always something in every song that saved it. This song seems to continue in the same musical direction he took with LP&twct, which I think is the best direction he should go. I completely agree with every word of this post. That is the reason why I used to dislike him so much. His creativity on "Love, Pain..." is what made me like his music again. I'll be buying this new album the week it comes out for sure.

This song is fantastic! Great tune and it actually sounds like something that would have come out in the late 90's; they way Keith vocalizes certain words and the melody sounds fairly old-school, I can see where it sounds a little poppish, but no more than any other tune. I'm digging this!

This track is okay. As with most of his releases, I find this track pleasant enough, but not something I would play repeatedly.

I don't consider this song country at all, but I do like it a lot. Bought the track already.

His forthcoming CD, entitled 'Defying Gravity', is one that I am really looking forward to, and I do hope that this tune does reach #1, since I really like it.

This has got to be my favorite song on the radio right now. I would be extremely disappointed if this song doesn't make it all the way to #1.

Now that Toby's next single has been announced and "God Love Her" is dropping, I think it's likely Keith will move to #1 next week. Toby is still #1 on the Real Time Tracker, but I'll say there's an 80% chance Keith will be there Sunday night. "Sweet Thing" should also be the first multiple week #1 since "She Wouldn't Be Gone." I think Darius will wind up replacing Keith at #1, and there's a gap of about 5 million between them right now. Because Darius and Keith are on the same label and because Keith's album is still five weeks away from being released, I wouldn't be surprised to see "Sweet Thing" stay at the top for 3-4 weeks.

Did he paint himself green and wear a black hat?? Huh?! I am assuming it was a reference to Wicked, because the big song from the play is called "Defying Gravity."

Between the success of this and You Look Good In My Shirt, I think it's safe to say Keith is back among the elite four or five in the eyes of country radio. Not that he had completely fallen off the A list, so to speak, but songs like Stupid Boy and I Told You So certainly deserved higher peaks than they received at the time. Now that he's gone back-to-back, I think he's finally returned to the the star he was (in the eyes of radio, I mean) at the end of the Be Here era. I couldn't be happier for him — in my opinion, Keith is the best thing country radio has going for it these days.

I have NEVER looked forward to a Keith Urban CD. I am IMPATIENTLY waiting for another month.
I used to highly dislike him when he was at the top of the country world a few years back. And now, I'm so glad he's back and big again. Now I hope he's around for years to come.

I've been thinking "three weeks" for awhile, and I completely agree with your analysis. I'm thinking KU and Darius split the next 5 weeks, possibly even 6 weeks. Hard to know when Darius takes over, but I don't think anybody else will get in the way. Haven't had a 3-weeker since I'm Still A Guy.

If Darius does get three weeks in the penthouse, the race for 2009's #1 single could be over by the one-third mark of the chart year in late April.

If Darius does get three weeks in the penthouse, the race for 2009's #1 single could be over by the one-third mark of the chart year in late April. Interesting comment. I did a little work to see how likely it is. 1. I don't have a way to project the #1 song on Aircheck/MB, because they count recurrent airplay. So the #1 song will be from early in the year, but how can we guess which song will hold up the best as the months go by? Darius is a reasonable guess, but there are other possibilities. 2. Bob Kingsley's method involved awarding points for each song and assigning all those points to the year in which the song peaks. So he could have a late-year song #1. So far the biggest hits, using my best approximation of his method, are Chicken Fried and Roll With Me. (The Christmas season tends to help songs stay on a couple of extra weeks.) If Sweet Thing can get 3 weeks at the top and then 3 more drop weeks (not likely), it might move to #1. Darius also could get to #1 with a 3-week run. Then we'll see -- RF, Brad Paisley, plenty of challengers later. 3. Billboard uses only current weeks, and begins counting with the first December chart. So Sweet Thing loses a couple of its weeks and Darius loses five. Still, Urban's song will get 7, might get 8 weeks with airplay over 30 million, and Rucker will do very well also. Looking at Urban vs. Rucker: In December, Sweet Thing had about 31 million impressions more than Be Like This. Then in January ST led by about 36 mill. In Feb the lead was 33 mill. Another 5 mill for the first chart in March, and ST will continuing adding to its lead for at least two more weeks. Then Darius will take the lead, and will win by big margins after ST goes recurrent. But can he make up 110 million? I'm not so sure. And there will be other songs that have their entire chart runs within the chart year. Not sure either of these two will be #1 for 2009 on Billboard -- but I can't rule it out either. We have two strong performers here.

For example, "Chicken Fried" wasn't even included in our new country challenge, because it didn't finish in the top 64 of the year......which is crazy.
