The then UK trio Loose Ends had about a hand full of US Urban hits while over in the UK the pop placing were minimal after this song. The group was formed in I believe in 1982 or 1983. While I am like this one the best, their others such as "Golden Years", Magic Touch", and "Dial 999 (Emergency)" were all tight joints before they made their big break over here in the US. Nevertheless, they hit number one one the US Urban charts knocking Aretha's "Freeway Of Love" out of the top spot after a five week run in 1985 according to R&R. According to Billboard, they placed number 43 on the Hot 100 due to single sales (#27), it would have made the top 40 had been for radio airplay. When I was living in Wichita, I have not once heard on a "top 40" station.

This song got no top 40 radio play here in NY either, o, maybe z100 played it several times in overnite shifts. But what a super song this is!! I swear, I feel like I'm giving glowing reviews to every thread on this board almost!! Frankie Crocker, I believe, was one of first, if not first DJ to play this song in America on WBLS in New York.
He started playing this about 2 or so weeks before my younger brother went to England on a trip for senior high school students who, I forget what, he was an honor student, and they rewarded a few of them with a weeks trip (which they had to pay, I forget circumstances, but it doesnt matter)
Anyway, my brother went to a record store, he's not the worlds biggest music fan, and asked the dj to recommend some stuff that might crossover in US. Got me this import 12 inch and a remix of Paul Hardcastle's "Rain Forest" with the sax added in. Was so proud to get them from him, especially since it was really hard to get either of them initially as imports. Album this is from "A Little Spice," and followup album that contains super song "Slow Down" were both really fine albums IMO.
Nick Martinelli did the productions for all these songs, he ripped off Jam/Lewis' fondness for Rolands TR-808 drum machine, and beat it to death in a great way. Besides most of Loose Ends stuff, he did a great song for One Way called "Don't Think About It," and another English band, 52 Street, their great song "Tell Me (how it feels.) IIRC he also did my favorite Stephanie Mills song, "You're Putting A Rush On Me." I'm missing a few others that I should know. Martinelli, I think, was sent to prison on cocaine trafficking charges or something like that.

As an add-on, Martinelli, as I read in AMG, produced the super early 90s single from Miki Howard, "Love Under New Management," which I wanted to do a thread about.Super vocal performance and stand out song IMHO.

Excellent choice. By my recollection, Hangin' On A Strig had some limited life in top 40 (when I was working in Texas, we only charted as high as #41 after three weeks). There is one song Loose Ends did before they folded. It was Don't Be A Fool.

This is possibly my second favorite by them. My favorite is "Stay Awhile Child". "Slow Down" is nice too. I don't really care for "Watching You". The production is nice, but other than that, "Watching You" isn't that great.

Wow! I'd never have expected this song to be a topic. I really liked this song, though I can hardly remember it. I bought the old vinyl 45, but my record player hasn't worked for years. Keep intending to get it fixed.

Keep intending to get it fixed. Yeah I bought the 45 in 1985 at Musicland in Wichita for some reason it would notplay without skipping on my inexpensive record play. So I took the single back twice, finally I just gave up and bought another single. Of course now I have both the 45 mix and the 12 inch mix.

My dad was a big Loose Ends fan. It's OK but I don't like it nearly as much as he does.

I have this song on '45. It never made the top 40 on either R&R or Billboard. It was an alright song.

Great song. The video is not on YouTube. It was in the past but I think they were forced to remove it.

I think they are an underrated band. I bought their "Best Of" collection a few years ago and I totally loved it.

Love this! I saw Loose Ends in concert in London last summer. (Carl McIntosh was the only original member in the lineup but they were still great.)

One of my all-time favorite 80s R&B songs. Heard this song alot as an old school cut on WGCI and V103 when I was younger. Still a great song. I also liked a few of their other songs like "Slow Down" but this one was their bets song. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yz1kvk9qeWI
