I'm going to start this topic here, and I strongly believe that there will be a hand full of participants. Before I begin, I may most likely start an additional topic to avoid misplacement and errors the replay accumulate. The first question may be a simple, however this may be come to a surprise for many.
How many singles did Robert Palmer have from his album Riptide? Name them.

Whoa... I thought I knew the correct answer, but I looked it up to confirm, and I must admit I was shocked at what I missed (let's just say Island Records #99597).

Hehe, I was waiting for someone else to give it a go (seeing as how I looked up the correct answer)... Anyway, he had 4 singles from that album that charted (not sure if there were any others released). In order: Discipline Of Love (Why Did You Do It) (this is the one that surprised me)Addicted To Love Hyperactive I Didn't Mean To Turn You On

Wow! I do know my music pretty good from that era, but have to admit, I never would've thought of "Discipline Of Love."
Now that you mention it, I remember seeing it in the Billboard Hot 100.

Next question:
She is considered a one hit wonder according to most peoples standards, however according to Billboard magazine she is not. I personally bought the album without evening hearing one song from it. The very first track on that album climbed all the way to number 34 on the Hot 100 making it her last top 40 hit. She had several hits on the R&B charts after hitting number one on both the Hot 100 and the R&B charts. Name that tune!

No...sorry. Good guess on the singer, but both answers are wrong. May I add she also hit number one on the Club , Hot 100, and R&B charts with the same song.Β The song (answer) I'm looking for is her last top 40 hit which peaked at #34 also sort of a Club hit as well.

Have you heard it before? I think I've heard it once, on a copy of an old AT40 show. I don't remember hearing it back in 1979, though.

Here is kinda a toughie. In 1985 this group who was on a unique named label that was later used by a 1990s trio that had only one pop hit. They placed three hits from their album inside the Year End Top 20 Billboard R&B chart all making the top 10 weekly charts on both the R&B & Pop charts, yet none of the three were placed in the top 10 for the year on the R&B charts. Who are they? Hint: They are on different & independent label being serviced to Urban AC only. The lead singer went solo in 1988. One last thing please read the question carefully.

Good guess, but, uh, no. New Edition has actually been serviced to both Urban AC & Urban just as well as CHR Rhythmic. The guys I'm talking about has not. Another hint: They were formed in the late 1960s and starting making "hits" in the mid 1970s. Yet b/t the late 1970s through 1988 they have had blockbuster hits on the pop charts had it not been for the lead singer who became a member during the time mentioned. Of all 22 of their top 40 hits only one of them made the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. According to R&R they have had zero number one songs.

Can't be DeBarge, they've never hit #1 on either Billboard or R&R.
I was going to say the Miracles, but they've had more than one number one hit and besides, they were formed in the 1950s.
I'm stumped. I've looked at Billboard's listing of #1 hits from between 1977 and 1980 and, for the life of me, cannot find an R&B group that hit #1 on Billboard and not R&R.
What area of time was the number one song?

I feel bad having answered all three questions , but it's Kool & The Gang (I think).

BALLS! How did I overlook that??
I guess that, when scanning all of BB's number one songs, I saw "Celebration" and forgot that it did not go to #1 on R&R, which was a big surprise, since that's all I heard on the radio in early 1981.
I guess you mentioning 1988 as the end of their time frame of charting really threw me off, since their last Hot 100 hit, "Special Way" (which is one of my all time favorite songs) was only on the chart for the first two weeks of 1988. I associate that song more with 1987 than 1988, since it was pretty much dead by the time 1987 closed out. A vacuum effect was partially responsible for its staying on the chart past the New Year (since for the first few weeks of the year, there were very few debuts, due to stations not playing as much new music, due to year end countdowns, not reporting to the panel because of the holidays, and stuff.

Well mst3k you are ...uh. correct, of course, it was Kool & The Gang. They had three singles inside the year end 1985 R&B chart within the top 20 and neither one of them finished in the top 10. The songs included Misled, Fresh, & Cherish. Their long-time record label was called De-Lite unlike Deeelite (1990s dance trio). Their current single "No Show" featuring Blackstreet is on their CD "Hits:Reloaded" on the label that I believe is independent (I could be wrong) Sanctuary (Beyonce's father's label).
Oh yeah it was through 1987, my bad, really. I certainly I did not remember them making 1988 like Jody Watley, Pebbles, and many more.

What an opportune time to chime in with a new question!
Which #1 song on the Hot 100 has something in common with these four songs:
"Amazed" - Lonestar "9 To 5" - Dolly Parton "Ghetto Superstar" - Pras Featuring Ol' Dirty Bastard and Mya "Coward Of The County" - Kenny Rogers

I've got a good idea of the answer, but I don't want to monopolize this thread. ;)

"Live Like You Were Dying", because the above songs were country crossovers. "Ghetto Superstar"'s chorus derives from the Dolly Parton/Kenny Rogers hit "Islands In the Stream".

You're right in that it's a country crossover, but it's not LLYWD. The song I'm thinking of hit #1 on the Hot 100.
Here's a small hint for each of the 4 songs I listed:
Amazed - This was the first of something since the song in question 9 to 5 - a person involved with this song is involved with the song in question Ghetto Superstar - think "derivation" Coward Of The County - same hint as 9 to 5

What does Islands In The Stream have in connection with Amazed? ??? I'm not positive on this, but my guess is Amazed is the first country crossover to top the Hot 100 since IITS.
The hints for 9 to 5 and Coward of the County are not only the same but in the process are linked by the association. And the derivation thing is given away in golden eagle boy's post.

And golden eagle even mentioned the song in his post (and he was on the right track, just went a little too far). But yes, The Dolly/Kenny duet is the one I was thinking of. I should have put in another 1983 hit (like "Every Breath You Take") in the list to throw off the Country hints a little bit. Great job Captain K! Your explanations are exactly right, including "Amazed". Perhaps Carrie Underwood can make her way to the top with her AMERICAN IDOL song and only make the country (albeit heavy crossover) gap only 5 and a half years. Someone else can give the next question.

I'll do it. I'll make it a little easy.
In 1989, American Top 40 accidentally played two songs out of order from their actual charting position. One song, which was actually #32 on the Billboard Hot 100, was placed at #33 on the show and vice versa. Name those two songs.
