This is one of those remakes that far exceeds the original. One of Linda's biggest hits, hitting #3 on the pop and adult contemporary charts, and doing surprisingly well on the country chart, peaking at #2. Much bigger than the Roy Orbinson original.
Linda's vocal performance on this track is incredible, and her outstanding live version is in high rotation on VH1 Classic. This type of music isn't my cup of tea, but I can't deny how good this track is.

Not my favorite of hers but good nonetheless. I think this is what Mutt Lange had in mind with Shania Twain, a cross between Linda Ronstadt and Bryan Adams. My favorite is still "You're No Good." She became too reliant on remakes and that was her undoing, especially her "punk" album.

I disagree that it exceeds the original, but I didn't much like the original anyway. I just don't care for this song in any of its myriad iterations. However, I do like some of the other tracks on the album 'Simple Dreams'. Poor, Poor Pitiful Me is one of her all-time best songs. There's also an excellent cover of the Rolling Stones' Tumbling Dice, but the version offered on this record is exceeded considerably, to an extent that almost challenges the original as the definitive, by Linda's own live version which is available on the soundtrack to the motion picture FM.

I think it's a toss-up which is better, Linda's version or Roy's. They both have incredible voices and I love both their recordings of this song. I like Linda's ending better (with the high 'yodel-y' note).

I'm wondering if the bass line in Billy Joel's song "An Innocent Man" was inspired by this song.

Sure sounds like it to me. And did the first time I heard BJ's song.

This is good but not one of my favourites. She became too reliant on remakes and that was her undoing, especially her "punk" album. Became? That was pretty much her career from the beginning.
