Since I last replied to this, I checked out some of the dance remixes. Most of them lost the edge of the original and became more 'fluffy' and cheesy. Some of the Danny Tenaglia mixes had a classic piano-house feel to them while the others were really dark and weird. The original version and video edit (with the door slam sounds) still reign supreme for me.
great video, but i understood at the time why this didn't work. I was even writing the charts down at this time. Didn't do so well....
Probably due to Bedtime Story coming before it. But I agree that this had a classic video, even despite its simplicity and is overall one of Madonna's best. I still listen to it regularly.
I love it. I saw the music video at the time, I think the networks still censored words that definitely couldn't be said, but I took notice at "bitch" being said in a song.
This and "Bedtime Story" are great imo. both show that she could bring an edge to her pop music.

I like the theme, the video is hot... but never really LOVED the track. It's like she was channeling T-Boz (which well may have been the case, as she did collaborate with Dallas Austin on that album).
While not as alienating as "Bedtime Story," it was another risky single release, a reply to the media and naysayers (Fred Bronson even commented on that in his Billboard column).

I agree, I've recently really warmed up to 'Bedtime Story.' It's actually brilliant, and 'Human Nature,' is just awesome.

Radio doesn't love these type of answer-to-critics tracks- it would have fared better as, say, a lead single, but by the time it got to the fourth single- and following the totally non-radio-friendly "Bedtime Story," radio didn't t latch onto it much.
But, M has kept it going by performing it in three of her five tours since 2001.

One of her best singles period. I think this would have been a hit if it would have followed "Take a Bow" instead of title track "Bedtime Stories". This did get some decent Urban/Rhythmic airplay though. I believe it peaked in the Top 20 on both formats.

^It peaked at No. 19 on Top 40/Rhythm-Crossover, and peaked at No. 70 on R&B Airplay (the audience-based chart).
The Hot 100 Airplay peak was No. 58.
It did log six weeks in the top 50 on the Hot 100, which is decent for a single that peaked at No. 46. Ten of its 15 weeks on the Hot 100 were spent in the 46-57 range, so it was a consistent performer, at least.

I wish Britney could've sang her parts during the S&S tour.
The message of the song is so powerful and she was so brave for releasing it during that time. My fave line remains: would it sound better if I were a man?
