Their debut hit, top 5 in America.
This was a total Roxette rip-off, but still very good. And considering Roxette's chart fortunes were on the wane by the time this came out they filled the gap nicely.
I love the chorus.

This wasn't that good. I didn't like the group much. I remember when they said "New Savage Garden coming up next" on the radio and I groaned and then "Crash And Burn" came on and I loved it.

I always used to sing along to that line as "chicken, cheese, and cola".
I loved this song... one of my favourites from 1997.

Several people thought this was a rip-off of "Life Is A Rock (But The Radio Rolled Me)" by Reunion. The rapid-sung verses sound much the same.

Anytime I need to see your face I just close my eyes And I am taken to a place Where your crystal minds and magenta feelings Take up shelter in the base of my spine Sweet like a chica cherry cola I don't need to try to explain I just hold on tight and If it happens again I may move so slightly to the arms And the lips and the face Of The Human Cannonball that I need to I want to...
Good song.

There were several years where I went without hearing this song, and then one day I saw on the Rick Dees website a song called "I Want You" by Savage Garden. I'm thinking "I've never heard of this, I bet it's one of those sappy "I Knew I Loved You"-type ballads". So then I'm in the basement one day and they announced on the radio "I Want You" by Savage Garden, and then I went "Oh my god, the cherry cola song!"
That's how I remembered this song as: the "cherry cola" song, since I think Coke used it in one of their ads. I remember Savage Garden growing up, but I never had any idea this was one of their songs. I loved it every time I've heard it, though. I was 11 when it came out, so I think its catchiness was what hooked me. Of course, now it's still incredibly catchy, but it's only one reason why I like it. It's like an excuse to do a rap song, except it's not a rap song. Easily one of the more exceptional songs of the decade, and it's my second favorite song of theirs behind "To The Moon And Back".
Oh, and is it just me, or did Jennifer Lopez rip off the bridge of this song for "Jenny From The Block"?

Awesome song. I'm a Savage Garden fan through and through, and this is what got me hooked. One of the only CD's I ever purchased without hearing more than one song from it was because of this.

Good song! Yeah! I have the single and the CD as well. Someone said to me that it sounded "80s".

I also have the album. This was (still is) great. So were To the Moon and Back, and Crash and Burn and Affirmation from Affirmation.
I didn't care for their other three singles that much. Truly Madly Deeply and I Knew I Loved You were a little too lovey-dovey for me, and I didn't like Darren's voice in The Animal Song (especially a part in the chorus).

Good song, if I had a personal chart back then it would've been at least top 5.

This is decent, but I didn't see what everyone was fussing over when it was out. I thought "To the Moon & Back" and "Truly Madly Deeply" smoked this song easily.

Love it! And yes it does sound like classic Roxette... not that that's a bad thing. "To The Moon And Back" is still my favorite Savage Garden track though.

This was their best song other than "Truly Madly Deeply." I remember Rosie O'Donnell used to play this song often on her radio show in early 1997 before the CD of the song came out. Then the track was a huge breakout hit.
I prefer the Xenomania Remix of this song than the original version.

I LOVE IT! The #1 song on my 1997 year-end chart. This is a catchy song from start to finish and that's a rareity. It's like rock, pop and dance combined together. I always tried to sing along to this back in the day so I looked up the lyrics and printed them out LOL and that's the only time I've ever done that. Their debut album is very underrated, it's full of great music with great hooks.

it was love at first listen... ;)
the original version touched the 80s kid in me... LOL.
their subsequent recordings showed a very different side to the duo... but i pretty much liked every single they released.
oh yeah! darren is an awesome singer... it's awesome to watch him sing live.
