One-hit wonder. Spent 4 weeks at #5 in the summer of 1989 (R&R), and hit #3 on the Billboard chart. Interestingly, this was about the same time that Madonna was spending her four weeks at #3 with "Express Yourself". (That fell 3-14 on L&R's last week at #5.)
The way this is sung is so much like Michael Hutchence on INXS's "Need You Tonight" and "Devil Inside" that, quite frankly, it's eerie.
Yeah, I like it.

Interestingly, this was about the same time that Madonna was spending her four weeks at #3 with "Express Yourself". (That fell 3-14 on L&R's last week at #5.) This was also around the same time another song spent a month at its peak in the Top Ten. That would be "Lay Your Hands On Me" by Bon Jovi. It spent four weeks at number five - in fact, I believe that it was the same four weeks as "So Alive", since both songs had gigantic upward movement on the chart. "So Alive" moved from 32 to 17 which, any other time, would be the biggest mover, but "Lay Your Hands On Me" beat them by one spot, moving 36-20. I was thinking that there would probably be a big battle for the top spot between these two songs but, in fact, neither of them came close to hitting number one. But they did spend an unusually long time (by 1989 standards, anyway) at their peak positions. IMO, the song is mediochre. It's one of those songs that misleads you at the beginning, since the opening chords are way different from the rest of the song.

So both songs spent the same four weeks at #5? Very interesting indeed. ;) Actually, Bon Jovi spent only three weeks at #9 - the last three of L&R at 5.

Oh yeah, that's right. I believe that it was at #10 the first week of L&R at number five.

If you don't pay any mind to the lyrics, believe me when I say this is one of the best pick-up/making-out songs ever!

Love this track. I love the harmonic exchange between David & Daniel, the gospel of a chorus, and contrast of the understated radiance of the guitars with the simple, punchy beat. The very epitome of the radio hit thats boasts a dark underbelly beneath the sunny, good-natured artiface - the type of freak pop I've developed an appetite for over the years.
This was Love & Rockets' biggest hit.

This is a great track.
Oddly, it is really the only song in the long careers of Bauhaus, Peter Murphy, Tones on Tail, Love and Rockets, Daniel Ash or anything else Bauhaus related that ever became a mainstream hit. That is really unfortunate. :(

Peter Murphy's "Cuts You Up" went to #1 on the Modern Rock Charts & charted somewhere in the 50s on the Hot 100. Daniel Ash's "This Love" went to #2 on the MR charts. But generally speaking, you are correct. L&R managed to reap some commercial rewards in their lifetime.

That is really unfortunate. :( Yeah, it's a shame really that they didn't have more hit singles. This is a great song! Loved this even as a 9 yr old kid when it was a hit, who was a few years away from ever hearing of Bauhaus.

Yes, it is true that Peter Murphy and Daniel Ash did have a few "modern rock" hits. I was mainly pointing out that they did not have any commercial pop top forty songs aside from So Alive. Not that I think there is anything particularly special about having mainstream pop top forty songs in itself. I still remember seeing Peter Murphy live during the "Deep" tour when I was a youngster. That seems like a million years ago.

I would love to go see Peter Murphy on a solo tour. I saw Bauhaus last summer, and it was terrific. There's supposedly a new Bauhaus album in the works.

So Alive reached #3 in 1989 and it was the only top 40 pop hit in their career and it's probaly the reason the band they didn't an album til 1996

Actually, they didn't release an album until 1996 again because Ash wanted to focus on his solo stuff. The band's relations were all but imploding by the late 80s.

Not among my 80s favorites, but it's good nonetheless. I'd never made the INXS connection, but I agree that it's not far from that sound.

It's creepy but I feel that vibe is sort of the selling point of the song. Love the beat as well.
On the whole, I prefer the other Bauhaus cohort acts more though.

Video:
ETA: Also the #1 Alternative song of 1989, which is hardly a surprise since it spent 5 weeks at #2 behind "Fascination Street" followed by 5 weeks at #1.

I love this song. It's so sexy. Someone here mentioned an INXS parallel, which I get, but I also think it sounds like Roxette in terms of the vocals.
