I've never really liked this song all that much. When it came out, I thought that the lyrics were very trite compared to all her earlier releases. It just seems contrived and not very sincere... But I will agree on one thing: Great vocal performance.

Not one of her best. Great vocals, but the lyrics feel forced.

I don't like this. There were better ballads on Music Box.

Definitely not Mariah's signature song, but I like it. This is the Mariah I like, at least moreso than the late 90s-2000s version.

It's schlock, but a-grade schlock. Not one of the better songs on Music Box.

Hero went #1 in 2003 and help her album Music Box reached #1 on the album chart 1993, not 2003

At times this song really causes me to feel extremely emotional and even though it's not one of my favourites by her, the message in the song really hits home.

I always say this story..."I'll Be There" was the first time I heard Mariah and "Hero" was the song that made me a fan...instantly. Call it corny, schmaltzy...whatever. The song is a classic and I love it.

Not really a fan of this. She's had much better both before and since.

This is not Mariah's "signature song", but it is a great track.

One of my least favorites by MC. Dull.

She sounds stunning, but the song itself is dull as f**k.
Kind of a shame this is her "signature" song, because she has countless others that blow this one away by miles.

At the time, LOVED IT. And I can't deny it's one of her signatures. But if I never hear this song again, I'll be fine.

For years I used to abhor this, because I found it basic and hated that, of her entire stupendous catalog, this had become her most popular non-holiday song.
Then, and this is gonna sound corny but oh well this is the nostalgia section and we're all reminiscing, I went through a rough personal time and I remember one night I was sitting in bed thinking, listening to music, and feeling down anyway, and out of the thousands of songs in my library this came on (I was listening to my library on shuffle as ususal) and just at that moment for the first time I paid real attention to the lyrics and "Hero" just magically clicked with me. As "simple" as they might be, they really are comforting and uplifting. I have loved the song since then.
There was a short period (from 2006 to 2009) where performances of this song were just subpar, but Mariah has been killing again it in recent years:
The Daydream tour performances are also worth checking out because, aside from the fact they're vocally superb, the song's arrangement is a joy to listen... that guitar outro...

She SANG this song for the Gawds on that tour. The notes she reached are superhuman. :'( In general the live arranegements with the choir are the best, although this is another performance I love:

Hero is Mariah's signature song. Agreed, it's still being played on the radio to this day.

Mariah delivered a great rendition of this song last night. Say what you will about the lyrics (and I'm sometimes critical of them myself), they really fit so many situations. They are for anyone struggling. I know they've helped people struggling with depression, people struggling with their sexuality, etc. It's not a coincidence Mariah was asked to sing this song specifically after 9/11, and it of course fits an occasion like Obama's inauguration. And now it fits Mariah getting back on the same stage where she had one of her worst PR disasters. It's a song where you have to be going through something to feel it, but we all go through something at some point.
Additionally, this is actually a great song musically. It has a great build to it, with the melody getting better and better as the song goes on. The official video for the song is over 175 million views, so hopefully it passes 200 million before its official 25th anniversary.

One of Mariah's best. Glad she performed this on New Year's Eve, it was an amazing performance.

Like Mariah, I've grown to love this one over the years. She delivered a moving rendition tonight at the BMAs. I hope some younger people were introduced tonight.

This song helped me through some pretty dark times. I needed to hear that I was strong enough to survive.
Ultimately I was introduced to Mariah and her music because of the connection I had with the song at the time. It will forever be one of my favorite Mariah songs. I am glad that she seems to have embraced the song in recent years and has taken the connection that it has with so many people to heart.

I heard this song a lot on B96, Lite FM 93.9, and 100.3 in my market. I think even WGCI played it too as Mariah may had been seen as too pop/AC for the urban stations during that time. Mariah made so many power ballads during the 1990s and I think this is one of her more memorable ones.
