One of the strangest hits of all time I think....
"Someone left the cake out in the rain I don't know if i can take it cos it took so long to bake it and i'll never have that recipe again agaaaaaaaain!"
Amazing vocal from Donna though, and an absolute Disco classic. LaToya should've done this on American idol disco week IMO.

It's okay. Better than the original by Richard Harris, which didn't have a disco beat to make it tolerable.

I love both versions (Harris and Summers.) I prefer Donna's though.
I just edited this because I was pining for a mid length version and remembered there was a 6:30 one on an Anthology I used to have of her.

Donna's is the best, Richard's grew on me in time. Definitely some of the strangest thoughts ever put into a hit record.

Long and boring.
I much prefer "Hot Stuff," "On the Radio," "Heaven Knows," "Bad Girls," and "She Works Hard for the Money."

One of the worst written songs of all time, but somehow Donna turned it into a classic. One of those rare remakes that turn out light-years better than the original. A good singer can do that though.

I had thought about starting a new thread about the "MacArthur Park Suite, but then I noticed there already was a thread about the original song. I have loved the original song, but I love this other one. This version of the song was a 17 minute epic which consisted of "MacArthur Park", "One Of A Kind", "Heaven Knows" and a reprise of the first one. This took up an entire side of the Donna Summer Live & More LP. Check out this unique track. It's worth your while. s35.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0EP4BH0A2IR4D2NPBL63KS0Z6W

Thanks for posting the whole Suite, Disco Dude! :) You're quite welcome! I thought it would bring back some good memories for the Donna Summer fans. And this is an essential song to own. I got this track just because I was curious as to what it sounded like. I ordered the CD of The Dance Collection just to hear what it was like. I had heard all of the other tracks before in their original versions, but I hadn't heard this one. About 5 days after I ordered it, it arrived. I opened it up and put it into the CD player, and I just loved it the first time I heard it. I listened to it back-to-back 5 times that evening. Thanks for the link. Donna sure knows how to work Disco. What a nice medley. All three songs go so nicely together.

Donna had so many great songs, but this was my favorite because it was so unique. Wasn't the original one by the Four Tops?

Wasn't the original one by the Four Tops? Nope, although they did take their version into the Top 40 in 1971 (peaked at #38).

Who made the original??? ??? As mentioned further upthread, Richard Harris was the first to chart with it.

Donna Summer's cover of MacArthur Park reached #1 in 1978 and was Donna's first #1 pop hit

The song was written by Jimmy Webb for the 60s band The Association (Cherish, Windy, Never My Love) as part of a long cantada but they refused it saying they didn't want to lose a whole side of an LP to it and cut themselves out of publishing royalties by not having room for their own compositions. Webb then offered it to Richard Harris who scored the hit and a huge album while the Associations album bombed...

Perfectly good, but then, I appreciate Jimmy Webb's songwriting and am not too embarrassed to admit I listen to Richard Harris's music as well. Webb's poetic drama is a good mixture with Harris's theatrical inclinations, I think. Donna Summer's version, for that reason, is a slight downgrade for me, but I still like it quite a bit.

Yep. "Love To Love You Baby" stalled at #2, "I Feel Love" got as high as #6, and "Last Dance" hit #3.
As for this song, I like it but it's not quite my favorite from her.

I LOVE the song in terms of production, structure, voice, sound, etc., etc.... but today is the FIRST time I know about the weird lyrics LOL. I have loved this track for 20+ years though. Classic Donna!

Not one of my top 5 Donna, but I enjoy the lengthier version that includes the "After all the loves of my life" section... that's classic Donna bliss.

I've grown a new fond of this song. It is pretty terrible, lol, but what got me are her vocals & of course the amazing, upbeat production. I need to do something with this production one of these days.

There are two different versions of the "MacArthur Park Suite". The one on her Live & More album and the one on her The Dance Collection album are edited differently. "One Of A Kind" is shorter and "Heaven Knows" is longer on the Live & More album whereas the former is longer and the latter is shorter on The Dance Collection. That second version is also the same one which appeared on the original promo 12".
