Haunting comeback ballad which reached #7 in 1996.
One of my favourite George Michael songs. Beautiful stuff.

Not one of my favorites by him, but it's not bad.

This was a really bizarre choice for a lead-off single. Beautiful song though.
Oddly it was his first solo #1 from a George Michael studio album in the UK. While he went on to have several more of his highest charting hits in the UK, his fortunes were reversing in the US. This underperformed in the US (despite the sales fueled Top 10 debut) and was his second to last Top 10 there.

It was OK. I preferred the next single, "Fastlove".

George first performed this song at the very first MTV Europe VMA's in 1994
The problem with it is its length. It's 6 minutes, and while it doesn't drag on, radio stations played an edited version that didn't do it justice.

It is beautiful, and it is haunting, and it is... a bizarre choice for a single, let alone a lead. But that's one of many things I loved about George, and it wasn't the first time. I think leading with Praying For Time off Listen Without Prejudice set the precedent for him releasing this. PFT may be a bit more accessible than JTAC, but both are slow ballads that were followed by an uptempo 2nd single. And both slow leads peaked higher than their uptempo (and probably more obvious choices for leads) follow ups.
This isn't one of my favorites from him, not by a long shot. But, like Sade, he can seduce me with whatever mellow jazzy bs he wants. Sing to me and I'm good.
