I popped Matchbox 20's Yourself or Someone Like You in my CD player for the first time in a long while. I forgot what a great album this was with so many hit singles. And Rob Thomas' voice is so different on this album. Much more raw and angry. It brought back such great memories. Love Rob's voice today, but sometimes I miss the angst.

There's a reason this album sold roughly 9 million copies (certified 10X platinum). I sometimes forget how good this album is also. To me, there's not a single bad song on there, I listen to it from start to finish and really enjoy the album.

Spin Magazine recently had a list of the worst albums that almost everyone had in their collection. This album was one of them. Totally disagree.

Spin Magazine recently had a list of the worst albums that almost everyone had in their collection. This album was one of them. Totally disagree. These "worst" lists are getting more and more absurd. I hope not many people take them at face value. And yes, I wholeheartedly disagree with that list. YOSLY is one of the best albums in my CD collection. I love listening to it from time to time.

All the songs sound the same. This is an overrated album. It's not bad, but not great.

Very good album, it's tough to choose between it and Mad Season as to which is my favorite.

The whole Spin Magazine blurb is absurd. Most critics only hammered on Matchbox 20 from the beginning because of the "alternative Hootie" stereotype.
Matchbox 20 is a great band, that isn't exactly groundbreaking but nevertheless enjoyable to listen to. Plus, Rob Thomas is a great songwriter. He's not exactly a fanciful one but he writes songs that everyone can relate to, and THAT is why the band has so many hits.
It isn't as easy as some think it is to write songs that can universally apply to all. Rob Thomas is excellent at that, and that is an important reason that has made me love this band from the beginning.
But even more importantly, they work as a band, not Rob & Co. Rob writes all the songs (with a little help from producer Matt Serletic) and chants all the vocals on the album, but Kyle is the master behind the cool signature riffs of "Real World", "Girl Like That" and "Busted", Adam supervises the full throttle blasts of rock effortlessly, Brian punches in the bass that stands out especially on the more raw tracks like "Back 2 Good", and Paul completes the rhythms with his drumming.
Rob especially triumphs in his songwriting off the hit fifth single "Back 2 Good", the tragic tearjerker "Kody", and the deep and heartfelt album closer "Hang". Those are the three high points of the album to me, though the whole album is consistent and strong.
This album doesn't herald a new age or anything, but what does it matter? It indeed infatuated the world from 1997 to the end of the century, and, unlike Hootie & The Blowfish, they are still making huge waves. This is evident they have done something very right.
My Review: 5 stars out of 5
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

I first heard this album at a cousin's house...I believe it was one day in 1999. I really enjoyed the sound of it, and wanted to get it.
I forget how long it was since that day before I ended up getting it, but I think it was either before Mad Season came out or during that era.
Still sounds good today, but besides the singles (Real World in particular), it has soured on me a little bit. I don't doubt that that's because I ended up also enjoying the much-different-sounding More Than You Think You Are, and it resulted in me not listening to this for a while after getting that one (my 18th birthday, I believe).

I enjoyed and still enjoy the first single 'Long Day'. The rest of the singles got a little played out in my opinion.
