A CD would never stay that long these days because record labels suck. Plus, 99% of the people on these boards would probably start complaining after week 150 or something and write to Billboard asking them to remove it... also, the whole Catalogue chart idea or something.

Also, The Wall spent more weeks at #1 than most albums do this year, so there would be complaints, and people saying how the album was "scammed" to be #1. BTW, there was also a thing called free-form radio in Pink Floyd's heyday, which is seemingly nonexistent today.

Its run if the Pop Catalog chart were around today:-198298-98-96-off for good
That really cuts down the chart run, including the five consecutive years that the album stayed on Billboard, and it would have only stayed on for 210 total weeks.
I bet it came back up around 1975 because Wish You Were Here was out, as well as the re-rocketing of the other album's releases.
I know it would've re-entered all of those times because Billboard allows albums back on the chart if they're selling enough to be at least #100.

I'm listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" and would like to get more info on it. I've never really listened to Pink Floyd before. But this album was discussed at a seminar I went to that was put on by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame about the Best Rock albums of all time. It made me curious about this album and the band so I picked it up at the library. Do you have any insights, opinions, etc. on this album or band? Do you know what songs were released as singles from this album? Your favorite songs from this album?

From what I remember (and allmusic.com is worthless on this), Money was the only commercial single from the album and went top 20. But every song has gotten substantial play on rock radio over the years. This album was at one time and may still be the record holder for most weeks spent on the Billboard Top 200.
As for my favorite songs...the whole album is brilliant, but highlights are Brain Damage and the female vocal performance during The Great Gig In The Sky. And of course Us & Them, which is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Yeah, it still holds the record for longevity (and under current rules, will never be topped).
I've always found the whole Wizard Of Oz connection fascinating, but I've never been drunk enough to actually try it.

As I listened to the album that song popped out as very Alan Parsons-ish. Then I read the liner notes and Alan Parsons was the engineer. My brother used to play an Alan Parsons Project album all the time. Used to love it.

Can you explain the Wizard of Oz connection? Basically, synching up Dark Side Of The Moon with The Wizard Of Oz results in some strange coincidences. Here's one of the better websites explaining more about it: members.cox.net/stegokitty/dsotr_pages/dsotr.htm

Regarding the Wizard of Oz coincidences...has anyone considered that maybe the film was matched up to the record, not the other way around?
Try to get your head around that one.

It's definitely an interesting way to watch the picture. I didn't look at the website linked above, but I well remember a Time magazine article several years ago that gave all the details about it and convinced me to try it. If I remember correctly, you cue the disc and start the movie. When the MGM lion roars for a third time, start the disc. The Pink Floyd music mixes perfectly with the images on screen. If you do it right, the alarm bells in Time should start at the very moment the door opens and the film medium switches from black & white (or sepiatone, if you have one of the best, most accurate prints) to Technicolor.
One thing I don't remember the article mentioning but that is none the less true: if you'll leave the film volume up just enough to hear it behind the Pink Floyd, you'll notice that the songs are in the same key and actually mix well, although the lyrics get kinda cluttered if you turn it up too much.

That website is sooooo interesting. Now I'm going to have to try it sometime. That website basically debunks the theory that it was done intentionally which kind of spoils the whole magic of it. For some reason I want it to be true.
Oh, and this album was ranked #43 on Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of all time list. It says that "Dark Side was one of the best-produced rock albums ever, and "Money" may be rock's only Top Twenty hit in 7/8 time". I wish I knew more about music to know what 7/8 time is.

I wish I knew more about music to know what 7/8 time is. 7 beats to the measure, an eighth note gets one beat.

I listened to this album probably hundreds of times when I was younger. It is a classic album. From what I remember (and allmusic.com is worthless on this), Money was the only commercial single from the album and went top 20. But every song has gotten substantial play on rock radio over the years. This album was at one time and may still be the record holder for most weeks spent on the Billboard Top 200. Times like that show how irrelevant pop charts and chart singles success can be. "Dark Side of the Moon" is far more memorable than any of the pop releases that year or any of the Grammy nominated songs/albums from the 1974 Grammys and it will have a far longer life and influence than any pop release that year. It spent 741 consecutive weeks on the Billboard top 200 album chart and it still a regular on the pop catalog album chart. With it's combined catalog chart run and Top 200 album chart run, Dark Side of the Moon has been on the charts an astonishing 1572 weeks. :o

Did you know one of the Pinky Floyd Dark Side of the Moon tracks was used in a mid 1970's TV commercial for Dole Bananas - "If you feel it, peel it".

Classic album. My favorites are "Breathe," "Us and Them," and "Any Colour You Like" (all among my favorites by them in general).
