Again, you hit the nail on the head on this classic. No one could do it more soulful than Lady Soul. Prior to this one Ben E. King did his version of it around '64 or '65 or somewhere close to it. But Aretha, brought it out and made it sound real.

Very good Aretha song. I really love her, so I don't know if I'd put this up in my Top 10, but there is nothing wrong with "Spanish Harlem".

It is quite good for a remake. I do prefer Ben E. King's original.
"Respect" is probably the greatest improvement to a song ever done. If you want to demonstrate to anyone what soul music is (and listeners of modern music may not know, since real R&B is so hard to find nowadays), you can point to this one.

"Respect" is probably the greatest improvement to a song ever done. You mean Aretha's version of "Respect" wasn't the original version? Who on earth did the original? An amazing song, by the way. As far as "Spanish Harlem" goes, I've not actaully heard Aretha's version, but I'm pretty sure I'd prefer the Drifters original (or the Ben E. King original whatever...)

Aside from "Respect," I'm not much of a fan of most of Aretha's remakes (she charted with quite a few)... she tends to oversing on them.
