Released in 1978 from the "Is It Still Good to Ya" album, the songwriting duo [The big Gaye/Terrell duets, Stephanie Mills, among others] put out this midtempo track. Incredible beat on this one. It's among their biggest singles, being one of their three hits to peak at #2 on the Billboard Black Singles/Hot R&B-Hip Hop Singles & Tracks chart. The only hit bigger than this, is the insanely overrated "Solid".

I've never heard the song, but here's an excerpt from Chris Rock's book Rock This:
[red]Every now and then Mama would splurge and buy some brand-name food. But it would always be some brand that no one's ever heard of.
"Hey, I didn't know Nipsy Russell had fish sticks!"
"Oh, here's Ashford and Simpson potato chips!"
"Aw look, Lou Rawls got chocolate chip cookies! The logo says, You'll never find a bigger chip than mine!"[/red]
So now I finally know who all three of them are. :) Just thought I'd point that out.

I'm expecting a reply from Bob now that this has been bumped.

Ashford & Simpson don't get enough credit for their own performances. I guess because they are overshadowed by their songwriting prowess. I like this song a lot. The title track of this album (IS IT STILL GOOD TO YA) is still my favorite by them. I also used to get a lot of requests for "I'll Be There For You" when I was in radio. Are Nick & Valerie still writing or performing?

I mean, this song is so hot. If a good producer sampled it, the song could go to #1 just on the strength of the original. For a while I had a hard time witht he weird "LOOSE me, LOOSE me!" part, lol, but now I like it. I don't get tired of this song, either!
