This album's flop in success is one of the most questionable ever for me. Radio didn't really shun it, it got enough good reviews, and yet, no one really bought it. Don't know why, as it was great. I'll blame it on the people deciding to follow trends and not pay attention to the actual music. I got this after the album was done, and all the singles had already appeared on my personal chart (including "The Day The World Went Away").
The singles are surprisingly good for an experimential double album. Although the first is not really first single material (but good indicator in direction), TDTWWA is interesting, I love the part where it gets to the acoustic guitars and the atmosphere, then the loud guitars suddenly come in.
"We're In This Together" is excellent. I wish radio would play it more as a gold, although the ending is real weird on the radio edit. I like both versions tho. There isn't really anything negative I can say about it.
I really loved "Into The Void" when it was out. The only NIN #1 of my personal chart thus far, but it was real good. For some reason, the video reminded me a bit of this old Cure vid I saw one day. I loved the instrumental part before it starts repeating toward the end.
"Starf**kers, Inc" had a great video, and is a great media-bashing anthem. While title may be repeated too much in the song and one of my least favs, I love it. Actually, I love every song on it.
"The Great Below" is the best song on any NIN album. I love the atmosphere of the song, and the way it builds up is very awesome. I could listen to this over and over again and not get tired of it. Who knew Trent would write such a great song.
For some reason, I didn't like the B-sides nearly as much as the album cuts.
I remember listing this at #1 on most influential albums of my life. If it was made today, it would probably be a different album, but this would still be way up there. It flows well too.
