He is known for his lyrics, not his voice. Then this has... neither?

Alright... I know the hip hop elitists will kill me for saying this, but...
this is the best thing he's released.
I love this track and think it has HUGE crossover appeal.
Lollipop was a good way to break into the mainstream, but a good way to stay is this single right here.

Haha, it depends on the type of elitist you're referring to. There are plenty of folks who rave on and on about Wayne's style and flow long before he crossed over to top 40, and many of those folks have abandoned him now. I personally think he made the wiser decision, and isn't any less rap, or any less talented than he was before. If anything, this exposure and format lets his art reach more of the masses.

^Don't worry, hip hop elitists don't listen to Lil Wayne anyway Yes. I listen to all hip-hop from the critically acclaimed (Jay-Z, Nas, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Q-Tip, OutKast) to the artists with just catchy songs (Flo Rida, MIMS, Soulja Boy, Yung Joc)...

Well I'm not sure if you consider yourself a hip hop purist or not, but the reason I said that is because the "purists" I know don't listen to any of those pop artists like Flo Rida, Soulja Boi... that's not even the genre of hip hop IMO. This may sound really absurd, but the people I know who live "in the hood" wouldn't be caught dead listening to 50 Cent or Eminem. They'll listen to some Dipset, but thats as mainstream as they get

I don't think anyone knows yet exactly how well Lil Wayne can play guitar.
If his admission of using Auto-Tune on every track for "Rebirth" is any indication, probably very little, primarily in the way of standard G, A and D7 chords. But even if this track is riding the success of "Tha Carter III", he's successfully managed to get this risk out in the open, and thus far it appears to be paying off. Whether it'll fizzle abruptly remains to be seen.
Sincerely, Noah Eaton

And plenty of people "in the hood" listen to 50 Cent and or Eminem.

I still wish an actual rock artist did this song. Like the song, but Lil Wayne doesn't sound right singing it.

OT: How dare you put Flo Rida and Soulja Boy in the same sentence. For shame!

This may sound really absurd, but the people I know who live "in the hood" wouldn't be caught dead listening to 50 Cent or Eminem. They'll listen to some Dipset, but thats as mainstream as they get If you wanna make money in Hip-Hop music today, you can't sell to the hood. The hood is the hood because they have no money. You have to sell to the masses. Being lyrical has gotten rappers nowhere this decade. You actually think most rappers have the dream of scoring big bucks from Pop-sounding records? Artists like Flo Rida and Soulja Boy could care less, but the majority of them don't want their own BS on the radio. Most rappers actually do want meaning in their content, but the labels and the even the artists themselves want to turn a profit, and will release whatever the masses are demanding (as we are seeing in this recessive economy, labels are taking even bigger risks with their star rap artists). Half of America may think its crap, but obviously its not the case because people ARE buying it. And once you crossover in hip-hop, there is NO turning back. That's why a great artist like Lupe is considering retiring from the game; he realizes if he doesn't release a crossover hit like Superstar again, his next project will be a commercial failure regardless of how it critically performs. It will be very interesting to see how Lil' Wayne, Kanye, and T.I. fare with their next projects after the obvious crossover attempts in 08.

It won't. The digital sales have dropped a lot, and the airplay is not that big yet.

I hope airplay and digital sales start to climb because #17 is great, but Lil Wayne should be able to do better. It's way too early to say this underperformed...you will have to wait til its dead.
