It now remains to be seen what will become of the space that was occupied by Virgin at Union Square. Part of it is now occupied by Nordstrom Rack. And unfortunately another part of it will become another Duane Reade! As if Duane Reade didn't have enough drug stores in the city already! Truly pathetic. What makes it worse is that Walgreen's just bought out the Duane Reade franchise, and there's a Walgreen's across the street from the Union Square South complex where Virgin used to be! It's all about J&R Records now. Personally, I don't mind that since I find the atmosphere pleasant enough and prices for catalog CD's to be extremely attractive. On any given day, you can find a number of fantastic 80's albums (some remastered) selling between $4.99-$6.99. How can you argue with that? Just a few weeks ago, I picked up the Eurythmics' Touch (Remastered) and Madonna's self-titled debut and True Blue (both remastered) each selling for $4.99. Sure, you have to make an extra special stop at the Brooklyn Bridge subway stop just to get there, but it’s totally worth it in my opinion.

...You guessed it: A BANK!!! Why the #^>& am I not surprised?!
Nordstrom Rack took a piece on the ground floor (where Virgin's bistro used to be) and maybe a large part of the basement (I've never been down there). Then Duane Reade came along and took the middle on the ground floor.
That left about 20,000 square feet, near Virgin's former entrance, still boarded up. Only this time, there's a promotion posted there for the soon-to-open Citi#^<k!
I give up! I would rather that another fashion outlet open up in that spot before a bank! Now, if only I could remember what was in that spot before the entire Union Square South Complex opened in 1998.

Just what NYC needs....another bank.
Hey - at least it's not another Chase.
Sigh...

Having grown up in Lower Manhattan in the 1960's and 1970's. I'm pretty sure that it was originally Mays' Department Store (S. Klein's Department Store was across the street, where that large apartment building and supermarket are at now).

I remember May's, and it was not located where Union Square South (Best Buy/Nordstrom/Duane Reade/Citibank) is today. May's was between Broadway and University Place. It closed in February 1989 (and so did the one on Fulton St., Brooklyn). Four years later, that same building was completely renovated inside and out, and in 1995 it became Bradlee's, which stayed there until c2001. Filene's Basement, DSW, Forever 21 and the Whole Foods Market occupy the space in that building now, and have been there for 6 years.

What makes it worse is that Walgreen's just bought out the Duane Reade franchise I stopped shopping at DR once they revamped their rewards-points system. They made it so you have to spend hundreds of dollars just to get any kind of redemption. CVS gives rewards much more frequently...

And to throw salt on the wound during the month where most record buyers pay homage to the independent music and video store, following the demise of J&R's music and video store (if not the entire franchise), it was just announced that the last of Yongman Kim's stores, Kim's Video and Music on 1st Avenue and 8th Street, will be closing down by the end of this spring or early-summer.

Say goodnight to Yongman Kim's empire. The last of his indie record stores closed on Monday 08/25. The people did a fairly good job of cleaning out most of the place, from what I saw the Saturday before.
