^^ Speaking of violins, Martie has fiddle credits on the new CD by The Flatlanders. Top notch songwriting and superb production! Glad to know she's in demand as an instrumentalist.

I was an extremely casual fan before TTLW but I loved that album. My favorites were
1. Lubbock or Leave It 2. Silent House 3. Not Ready to Make Nice 4. Easy Silence 5. Bitter End

The entire Taking the Long Way cd was brilliant. I imagine that had the "controversy" not taken place and they released this same album it would have been a ten million seller as well. Country radio would have played the hell out of several tracks.
Regardless of the lack of airplay, the cd went on to sell over 2.3 million copies. Not bad

I wouldn't have noticed this is not for a good friend's sharp eye. www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/newsPage.cgi?news07890Columbiaβs momentum will likely get a further spike in the spring with the return of two of the three Dixie Chicksβsisters Marti McGuire and Emily Robisonβwhoβll release an album and go out on tour. Natalie Maines hasnβt left the band, but sheβs said to be enjoying motherhood and living in Hawaii too much to go back to work just yet. The groupβs last album, released in May 2006, debuted with 526k and went on to sell 2.46mβ¦It's really bittersweet knowing that we'll be getting new music this soon but without Natalie. I'm pretty darn excited about hearing from Emily and Martie though, and have a feeling they will come up with something absolutely terrific together.

Taking The Long Way was so great, I hope this is just as good.

I think my heart just broke a little. Natalie, it will definitely not be the same without you this time around. It will be like the Dixie Chicks but without their voice. :(

I'm not sure I'm even interested tbh. A HUGE part of my love for the Chicks is Natalie's voice and her ability to turn any and every song into an emotional tornado.
I'll still be listening to the first single as soon as it leaks, mind you.

I'm feeling kinda torn right now. I'm excited about this side-project, but to me this is just a foreboding sign that an actual project from the whole group might be postponed for another couple of years.

I'm excited about this side-project, but to me this is just a foreboding sign that an actual project from the whole group might be postponed for another couple of years. Yeah, that's a concern of mine, as well. But from what I had been reading, it felt like a project from the whole group was a very long way away anyway. I always thought it was going to be a challenge for them to find another muse after TtLW, for one thing. So the way I'm looking at this is that it will be a way to get at least a bit of a fix, and much sooner than I was expecting. The other thing is this: I love Taking the Long Way, but the feeling I got from it (and it was one reinforced after watching Shut Up & Sing) is that there was work to do in terms of really reintegrating Emily and Martie's instrumental gifts as a defining part of the band's music. I think this side project could facilitate that process.

I love the Chicks. They're one of the few acts where I'll go out and buy the CD when it first comes out, even if I haven't heard any of the songs yet. Without Natalie? Eh, first I was thinking it would be like the Jackson 5 without Michael, but maybe not. Martie and Natalie are pretty good songwriters; I haven't heard either of them sing lead, but, based on the background vocals, they might do a pretty good job signing lead. I think it could work, and I'm looking forward to it.

Will it be a vocal album? Or maybe it'll just have a few vocal tracks and be mostly a bluegrass instrumental record? Or a record with guest vocalists. lol

So I am confused. Is Natalie no longer in the Dixie Chicks? Before she joined, Emily and Martie were a duo, right? but they never went anywhere with that. Natalie is a big reason they got big. I know she has a big mouth and is annoying sometimes...lol...but she is talented.
I love Emily and Marnie too though...but I just think it works better with all 3. Did they have a falling out?

I think this side project could facilitate that process. I agree with this. TTLW kinda puts Emily and Martie to the side, and to be honest I think it was due to the choice of producer. As gifted as Rick Rubin is at infusing a record with a raw and organic feel, he didn't exactly explore the unique qualities the other two sisters have to offer (for example, I'd like to hear more of Emily's sitar playing!), resulting in TTLW being their most generic album yet, if we're talking strictly sonic palette. As for their next choice of muse, I really wish they would go back to the more rootsy sound that graces Home, as I feel that record is the most perfect encapsulation yet of the qualities that make the Dixie Chicks so lovable. I'm also thinking that T-Bone Burnett would be the most suitable producer to assist them with the project. These are all just wishful thinking on my part of course, but hey, a boy can dream, right?

T, Natalie is enjoying her family (according to the blurb) so she is sitting this one out. Max, I know there's probably no chance for it, but it would be great if they had guest vocalists throughout the album. That would be pretty great. They could get some of today's more mainstream vocalists and tack them on a bluegrass instrumentation. It would, at the very least, make for an interesting listen.

Now I'm wondering if we might have a partial counterpart to Charlie Robison's Beautiful Day on our hands, or at least a record partially motivated by the same events. That could be good.

I'm excited about a new DC album, even without Natalie. Remains to be seen what the direction will be?

Dixie Chicks Plan Album, Tour With Court Yard Hounds Side Project With Natalie Maines on an indefinite hiatus, the other two Dixie Chicks - guitarist-banjoist Emily Robison and her sister, fiddler Martie Maguire - have recorded an album on their own, as Court Yard Hounds (a reference to the best-selling novel City of Thieves). "Emily and I had the itch," Maguire says, "and every time we'd call Natalie and say 'are you ready?' she wasn't ready. She wanted a clear-cut break." Recorded mostly at Maguire's home studio in Austin, the intimate pop-folk album features Robison's first-ever lead vocals and songs inspired by her recent divorce from country act Charlie Robison. "When Natalie's singing a song it has to strike a chord with her," Robison says. "These songs are very personal." Robison is joined by Jakob Dylan on "See You in the Spring." The duo will debut their new band at South by Southwest in March, with the album dropping in May and a tour to follow. Although Robison and Maguire insist the Chicks haven't disbanded, they admit they rarely see Maines, who lives in L.A. "I'm hoping she'll come out to one of our shows," Maguire says (the group's last album, Taking the Long Way, came out in 2006). "Maybe it'll inspire her to want to do music again." www.rollingstone.com/rockdaily/index.php/2010/01/15/dixie-chicks-plan-album-tour-with-court-yard-hounds-side-project/

Although Robison and Maguire insist the Chicks haven't disbanded, they admit they rarely see Maines.... That makes me kind of sad to read, but I guess it's better than if they had just made a record together without any passion behind it. It also reminds me of the open-ended demise of The Wreckers (without the nasty undertones, though). Maybe if Heroes gets cancelled Natalie will return to music.

This whole project just makes me feel like a new Dixie Chicks album is a long time away. I've been waiting for a new project for four years so this news is, a little heartbreaking.

The project sounds interesting. It is kind of saddening that they have lost contact with Natalie though.

I have a pretty good feeling about this. And Jakob Dylan? That's an interesting, albeit surprising, choice of collaborators. I'm definitely intrigued now.
