"Independence Day" was a #12. I know, but that's my point. "Blessed," "I Love You," I bet the majority of general country music fans wouldn't name those as Martina McBride songs... same goes for Reba. "Fancy" was not a #1 hit but it's her signature.. for Shania, "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" among others... that's why I usually judge artists by album sales and not radio hits (Craig Morgan, for example). Yeah, a song doesn't have to be a #1 for it to be an artist's signature song. Look at Patsy Cline's "Crazy" and "Walkin' After Midnight". Both #2 hits, but regarded as her signature songs. A song reaching #1 on the charts isn't everything.

Blake Shelton also considers "Old Red" his signature song and that fans love "Playboys of the Southwestern World" as well.

Those Tracy Lawrence #2's should have been #1's. It's a shame to what has happened to his career! First, welcome to Pulse Music Board, wolverine. Second, I agree. Tracy Lawrence and John Michael Montgomery were the most popular artists on the Atlantic label during the 1990s (throw in Confederate Railroad if you like). The I See It Now CD contained four top twos: 1. I See It Now-1994-#2 2. As Any Fool Can See-1995-#2 3. Texas Tornado-1995-#1 4. If The World Had A Front Porch-1995-#2 That was his follow-up to the Alibis CD which contained four chart toppers between 1993-1994: Alibis, Can't Break it To My Heart, My Second Home, and If The Good Die Young. Had ALL eight Lawrence releases hit #1, it would have been his longest stretch of chart topping hits (in the middle of that run, Renegades, Rebels, And Rogues hit #7, but that came from the Maverick Soundtrack). Considering his participation in the soundtrack, Lawrence's popularity was at an all-time high. I just think it was a matter of timing that led Lawrence to a string of runner-up hits in 1994 and 1995 (he also had three in a row #2 hits in 1996 and 1997). Then, Atlantic shut its doors down and Lawrence moved over to the sister Warner label, where only one CD was released and he moved over to the Dreamworks label. He only managed one major hit for them (Paint Me A Birmingham-2004-#4) and did not have any more chart busting hits for them (probably because Dreamworks was promoting a 'small' artist in the name of Toby Keith). Then Lawrence started his own label-Rocky Comfort (like many did during the 1990s and 2000s) and saw only one major success, Find Out Who Your Friends Are-#1 in 2007 (with or without Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney). He is set to release a CD (detailed in the Album Release thread) that will be on the BamaJam label (at this time I do not know if Rocky Comfort has been shuttered or not). Lawrence definitely looked like one of those artists with longevity in the business, but he only had an eight year run of major hits (1992-2000).

Thanks for the welcome.
I have heard reports that the new record would be released through Cracker Barrell, and then I heard BamaJam.
Rocky Comfort Records has officially been folded. Laney Lawrence "Tracy's Brother" was let go of his duties.

I have made a correction and an update on this list: 1. First, the correction. I have noticed I had Jerry Lee Lewis down for five #2 hits. He has six and is now in the proper place on this list. 2. The update: Rascal Flatts has just collected their sixth #2 hit in I Won't Let Go. I have updated that for everyone!

Let us make it official: Taylor Swift is the latest artist to join those with at least four #2 hits. They are: 1. Teardrops On My Guitar-2007 2. White Horse-2009 3. Mine-2010 4. Mean-2011-chart wise, her biggest #2 hit!

It had to happen sooner or later. Carrie Underwood becomes the 54th artist in country music with four #2 hits. They are: 1. Don't Forget To Remember Me-2006 2. I Told You So-with Randy Travis-2009 3. Mama's Song-2011 4. Two Black Cadillacs-2013 I have also retitled the thread as well.

Might as well make it official: George Strait has collected his ninth #2 hit (in Billboard) with Give It All We Got Tonight. He is now in the top ten of those artists with the most #2 hits. Is that worth celebrating? You decide. In the meantime, he has pushed Reba McEntire out of the top ten. If Strait gets another #2, he will be moved from #8 to #5.

I think it's amazing to think George didn't have a #2 song until his 59th single release, including 33 #1 songs. Mediabase has a ton to do with that, but it's still impressive that he could have 50 #1 songs by now on the Billboard Airplay chart.

I have updated Tim McGraw's #2s totals to seven with Southern Girl. This has been one of those songs that I kind of liked at first and just ended up getting more and more annoyed by, so much that as soon as I hear it come on the radio I instantly switch the station. Tim has always been hot or cold for me, so whatever he might choose to release next I will likely give an open ear too. But this, this tops the list of his worst releases...ever.

What's a shame is there are 2 songs with a lot of meaning to them that never went to #1 but they peaked at #2. "Where the Stars And Stripes And The Eagle Fly" by Aaron Tippin and "Letters From Home" by John Michael Montgomery. The latter being held out of the top spot by Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman"!

This is an interesting thread. Especially in light of the Kenny and Keith discussion that's been raging back and forth the past couple of weeks. I must say that although Tanya Tucker doesn't have the most #2's, boy, her list is SOLID!

I have updated Carrie Underwood's #2s totals to seven with Smoke Break. Here is her section of the list:
20. Randy Travis-7-1987-2009 21. Carrie Underwood-7-2006-2015
Appropriate that they are neighbors considering they share a #2 hit, I Told You So from 2009.

This thread seems to be mostly about Carrie, Brad, and Tim.
Maybe their teams need to work a bit more vigorously to get #1's on BB, not just Mediabase - all the other A-listers are able to!
