On the American Top 40 message board, I began posting my old Top 40 charts to correspond to the classic American Top 40 program with Casey Kasem that Premiere radio network was airing. I thought this would be an appropriate place for me to do this as well and I hope others who charted during this timeframe will do the same.
This week Premiere is airing AT40 from September 18, 1982.

My #1 song for this week was never played on AT40, although it spent nearly two months in Billboard's Hot 100 chart, peaking at #71. A one-hit wonder for me. Plus, a couple of songs that never even made the Hot 100, but both are by well respected singers. See if you can pick them out.

Plus, a couple of songs that never even made the Hot 100, but both are by well respected singers. See if you can pick them out. Dionne Warwick and Janis Siegel of The Manhattan Transfer? Good job! Those two songs had limited spins on radio, but I believe "For You" was Top 20 AC. I think "Back To The Islands" missed out on all charts, which is a shame because it is quite good. Enjoyed viewing your chart! Some interesting things to note: * I was happy to see Christopher Atkins in the Top 12 on both of our charts considering it wasn't even close to being on AT40. * The Melissa Manchester song peaked on my chart at #12 towards the end of June and had since fallen off. But I know it had incredible staying power on radio. It would be an amazing coincidence if Christopher Atkins peaked at #12 on your chart because then we would have opposite peaks for those two songs. * Cool to see the Dolly Parton song up so high on your chart. I had been a fan of the song since the mid-70's and although the 1982 version was newly recorded and released, it only managed a #33 peak on my chart a couple weeks prior to this chart. I must have thought it sounded so much like the original that it didn't offer much interest to me as a new release. * Only two of your Top 40 songs didn't make my chart. One was "Athena", which I didn't care for much at the time. But over time it has grown on me. The other was by the Michael Stanley Band, which probably suffered from very little exposure. But a quality group and their music holds up well today. This weekend Classic AT40 will be airing the program from September 8, 1984. Hope to see your chart this weekend!

Christopher Atkins did peak at #12 on my chart. In fact he only spent one more week within the top 40 at #12 before falling off never to return. A performance on SOLID GOLD was a great source to propel a song up my chart at the time and I think Atkins was a benefactor. Same can be said for Melissa Manchester. She ended up at #2 for the year with YSHHSTAY
Dolly Parton's 1982 version of "I Will Always Love You" was the only one I was familiar with at the time. She would eventually reach #2 after seeing her in "The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas".
I grew up about 2 hours away from Cleveland, OH where the local stations played Michael Stanley on a regular basis.
As for Janis Siegel, I may charted her if I had been exposed to her solo album at the time. I don't think I listened to it until a few years later, which is odd considering The Manhattan Transfer had a handful of hits on my chart.

He was making the rounds promoting the song & the movie from which it came from (The Pirate Movie). I also recall the multiple appearances of Manchester on SG. Actually, I think they just reaired the same performance of YSHHSTAY on multiple programs. Definitely a show favorite.

Wow... kind of a boring week on my chart..lol. No debuts and not alot of movement. You had some significant movement near the top. Looks like "I Ran" was just one week away from overtaking the #1 spot on your chart. It would reach #1 on my chart the following week as well. Looks like you allowed album cuts on your chart with a number of songs from Donna Summer's self-titled album. That album reached #1 on my Top 40 album chart the prior month. Yes, I even had an album chart! I guess it was my way to compensate for the limitation I placed on my singles chart to only include single releases. Another interesting observation is the lack of country singles, and instead, including songs that were exclusive to the soul charts. The biggest surprise was Dickie Goodman's latest novelty break-in debuting in the Top 10. I have many fond memories of his releases in the 70's, but by the 80's, it seemed like he was all but forgotten by radio. So it was great to see him on your chart. Thanks for sharing and hope to see your September 8th, 1984 chart this weekend!

Thanks for sharing and hope to see your September 8th, 1984 chart this weekend! It would actually take "I Ran" a couple more weeks to get to the top to only be overtaken again by "Gloria", which was, by far, my #1 song of the year. My chart originally started out with only songs (45's) that I actually owned eligible to chart back when I started in 1977. Then I started with album cuts shortly after, thanks to 2 soundtracks. First, Saturday Night Fever, then Thank God It's Friday....I was and still am very much a disco baby...lol. When that started to get too expensive I allowed all songs to chart....around the beginning of 1982. Donna Summer has always been my favorite artist, so it's no surprise that she also has the most album cuts to have charted. Being in the New York Area, country has never been a big charter for me. Country radio never does well here and I had very little exposure to it. I probably have had more country on the charts in the last few years than ever before thanks to internet radio (shout out to Dave..lol) and to CMT. I had forgotten all about the Dickie Goodman song til I saw it on my chart last night..lol. I don't even really remember how it went. Funny how the 2 of you have both "Oh Julie" and the Chris Atkins somgs relatively high on your charts. I vaguely remember "Oh Julie", the other one not at all....and I was a faithful Solid Gold watcher. Can't wait to see the September 1984 charts!

I don't even really remember how it went. Wow, "Gloria" sounded like a monster on your charts! There were only a couple of occasions on my chart where a song moved back into the #1 position after falling out and just like your example, those songs ended up being my #1 songs of their respective years. And coincidentally, the #1 song on my chart this weekend just happens to be one of them. Just like you, my initial charts only included 45's I owned. That was way back in 1971 ( I was very young! ;)). After a few months I stopped and didn't resume personal charting again until 1980. By that time I already had a few years of following Billboard charts and it was natural to start up again using the format I would stick with for the next 12 years. I would award gold and platinum singles, along with using the star system for songs that were gaining interest to me. Today I count on those charts to create my personal music compilations. I was a big fan of disco in the late 70's also. And don't get me started on the Thank God It's Friday soundtrack. Songs like "With Your Love", "After Dark", "I Wanna Dance", "Lovin Lovin Givin', etc, were played regularly on my turntable in 1978. Here's an interesting coincidence regarding the "Hey ET" single on your chart. The song it leaped over at #11 ("Vacation") just happens to be the first break-in song used in the "Hey ET" record.

Thanks for the interest! When I met the first person who created personal charts just like me over 20 years ago, I learned about some great obscure songs from the 60's and early 70's that he charted back then. Yes, there was someone who was creating personal charts every week starting in the mid-60s! So I love to review other charts too.

What an awesome thread. I hope this becomes a weekly thread with a new week in mind! Here is mine from Sept 18, 82 09 01 Voyeur - Kim Carnes........ -Voyeur still holds the record for biggest jump to #1 . Great to see a representative from our friends up north! One of the first music acts I went crazy over was The Poppy Family in 1970. The "Which Way You Goin' Billy" LP was incredible and a song from their follow-up album was a monster #1 on one of my first early charts ("Where Evil Grows"). Then groups like the Stampeders, Five Man Electrical Band, and Lighthouse became major contributors to the soundtrack to my childhood years in the 70's. And with your Canadian background, we see a number of songs represented for the first time in our charts. I was exposed to the Toronto & Headpins songs thanks to promo videos that were made for them. I believe the David Roberts song was titled "Boys Of Autumn" (just so no one confuses it with the Don Henley song). A nice ballad. The Scottie Pete Gang tells me that you must have been a CKOC listener. And my favorite of the obscure tunes is "Hey Operator" by Coney Hatch debuting in the Top 40. Never heard it in 1982, but wish I had. Where did this song ultimately peak on your chart? We were giving Kim Carnes a lot of love before your chart was posted considering she only peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 at #29. But now with your chart, it is unanimous that the song should have been a bigger hit than the #29 peak suggests. I don't believe I had any song jump to #1 from so far down the chart, so it was quite impressive to see the record-breaking performance on your chart. This weekend we will be celebrating September 8, 1984, so I hope to see your chart right here in this thread. I hope to dig mine out tomorrow night.

We were just giving Kim Carnes a bunch of love in 1982 and here she is leaving the #1 spot two years later on my chart. Unfortunately, the song didn't chart on the Billboard Hot 100. But what a great dance song and a 12'' remix single was even released for it. The Cars reached #1 for the first and only time, but what a visit. The song would spend 4 weeks at #1, drop to #2 for a couple of weeks, then return to #1 for 3 more weeks. Very unusual on my chart and resulted in the song being my record of the year.
Look forward to seeing your 9/8/1984 chart!

This week saw Patty Smyth & Scandal spend their 8th of 11 weeks at number one. Cyndi Lauper's first two singles reached number one, but "She Bop" would stall at #2.
I see "Hold Me" moving up your chart. How high would Whitney Houston eventually go? She made it to #25 in June 1984 for me.
"Drive" unfortunately never clicked with me. It reached it's peak at #28 this week. I don't remember hearing "Hurricane" more than once or twice. I had it listed as "New & Active" on my chart for two weeks in August, a feature I seemed to use once in awhile when there wasn't enough room for all the songs I wanted to chart at the time.

I started in '84 but wasn't able to retain my records OF '84. Subsequently I dont even remember what my #1 was for most of the year. Somewhere I had figured it out an wrote it down somewhere but I've lost that too. For Sept, maybe it was Ghostbusters? I know that went to #1. I do remember ALL of August, the #1 song was Dan Hartmans, "I can dream about you".

Neither one of your two number 1's made it very far on my chart :(
"Drive" eventually peaked at #18 and "The Warrior" was at it's #22 peak this week. I'm sure you could probably tell that the soundtrack to Purple Rain did very well in my chart..lol.
"I Can Dream About You" also was #1 on my chart at the end of July/beginning of August.
I'm surprised there was no Corey Hart love...unless I was late on it and you guys had already charted it?
Whitney's "Hold Me" peaked at #14 for me beginning of August.

"Sunglasses At Night" peaked at #6 on 6-23-84, but I remember it burned out quickly and was off my chart by the end of July. I missed out on Mtume comepletely. It didn't chart at all! Nice to see Prince taking over your top ten. Looking back PR was really a landmark album and should have won the Grammy for Best Album over Lionel Richie.

(still on 82)
Hey soundscene...yeah I meant "Boys of Autumn" ack. my hands sometimes don't type what my head wants! OMG! You actually picked up on the CKOC song. HAHA. I actually liked that back then...and I would still like an pm3 of that. CKOC was MY hitradio choice back then. I am a Toronto boy...but CKOC had the best music that time!
Will post my 84 chart tomorrow!

I had it listed as "New & Active" on my chart for two weeks in August, a feature I seemed to use once in awhile when there wasn't enough room for all the songs I wanted to chart at the time. 11 weeks at #1! That's two more weeks than the longest span at #1 of all-time on my chart, so that's quite remarkable. We were definitely opposites on our #1's since the Scandal song never caught on with me. I was partial to some of their other songs, like their first two singles and especially "Beat Of A Heart". Whitney peaked that week at #15. Her career really went downhill from there! LOL But seriously, she didn't perform nearly as well on my chart as she did nationally for the rest of her career. Nice to see a surprise country music entry on your chart with the Steve Wariner song. Although I didn't chart it, it's nice song. Same with what seemed like the 100th single release from the "Footloose" soundtrack as Karla Bonoff just dropped from your Top 10. You must have been a big soundtrack fan with obscure tunes by the Bus Boys (Ghostbusters) and Bonnie Tyler (Metropolis) also making your Top 40. Our common chart obscurity this time around is Neil Diamond's "Turn Around". I never allowed the Pointer Sisters to rechart in 1984 with "I'm So Excited" since it was too close to the original 1982 version that I had already charted back then. I'm still waiting to see what next weeks scheduled Classic AT40 replay will be for our next chart date, so I will keep everyone posted.

That Dan Hartman song had a killer 12'' remix released that I discovered after my chart run of the song had completed. I'm guessing next weeks classic AT40 will be a couple years later, so hopefully you will have that chart available.

Nice slow jam at #1 with the Mtume song. And another R&B biggie at #3 with "High Energy" that I bet was getting some serious rotation in the New York dance clubs. Oh yes, the "Purple Rain" soundtrack was hot and it would reach #1 on my LP chart the following week. Corey Hart peaked at #14 the prior month and had already dropped off my chart by this week. Another great combination of various musical genres represented on your chart.

I'm sure you could probably tell that the soundtrack to Purple Rain did very well in my chart..lol. Out of curiosity, did "Take Me With U" ever impact? Love that one. I actually liked that back then...and I would still like an pm3 of that. Possibly I can help.

"Drive" hit #6 for me. That was good for the Cars for me. Their best was thier #2 "You Might Think"
"Sunglasses At Night" took a LONG time for me to catch on. It was a hit here in Canada months before....but it was the video that really won me over. It hit #3
The summer of 1984 was really awesome in my book...so many groups and artists clicking for me. At this time with Cyndi already scored her 2nd # 1 here for me, I thought she would be the more successful over Madonna. "Holiday" hit #2 and "Borderline" #3

02 01 She Bop - Cyndi Lauper 07 02 The Warrior - Scandal We were close on our top 2 that week! "She Bop" was one of the first songs I remember charting the 12" version I agree about 1984, many acts that emerged that year remain my favorites today.
