As I’m listening to my 90’s country playlist I had a few artists from that decade pop in my head that never had a #1 hit and I thought they should’ve. They had #2 hits but no #1’s. These 4 in particular popped in my head. Hal Ketchum, Billy Dean, Lee Roy Parnell and probably one of my favorite groups of the 90’s BlackHawk. All had stellar songs that I think should’ve hit #1.

I have updated this thread for three reasons. They are: 1. To proclaim Blake Shelton the #1 artist of the 2010s according to Joel Whitburn. I got that from the paulhaney thread: pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/170632/next-country-singles-record-research If that should change because that book drops off in 2017, I will change it. 2. Shelton had the most #1s during the 2010s with 21. 3. Shelton is tied with Luke Bryan for the most #1s during the 2010s with 21, so I have given Bryan that designation as well.

Hal Ketchum, Billy Dean, and Lee Roy Parnell should have each had at least 3 and yes Suzy Bogguss should and would have surely hit #1 in March of 1993 with "Drive South."

Dan + Shay take a fifteen point jump to #90 as they collect their seventh #1, 10,000 Hours. Congratulations to the duo and something I thought I would never say, but congratulations to Justin Bieber for landing his first country chart topper.

onebuffalo With Lady A reaching 10 #1’s it got me thinking about other artists that I think will reach it this decade. No doubt I think Luke Combs will but here are 5 others that I think will. Old Dominion, Dan + Shay, Eric Church, Jake Owen & Brett Young. These are my 5 picks to do it this decade. If this happens Old Dominion will become only the 7th group to achieve 10 #1’s and Dan + Shay will become only the 5th duo to achieve the feat. Looking at the artists below 10 there are some really good ones I thought should’ve had 10 #1’s before radio tuned them out or they passed. Keith Whitley, Tracy Lawrence, Mark Chesnutt, Lonestar, Faith Hill and Restless Heart are just a few of my personal favorites. Do you have any thoughts as to who you think could achieve the feat of 10 #1’s this decade?

I have updated Blake Shelton's #1s totals to 27 with Nobody But You. Congratulations, Blake with a little help from Gwen Stefani. Because of that, Shelton has now pushed Alan Jackson out of the top ten. Let us look at the top eleven:
1. GEORGE STRAIT-44-1982-2009-HOF-AOD (2000s) 2. Conway Twitty-40-1968-1986-HOF 3. Merle Haggard-38-1967-1988-HOF 4. Ronnie Milsap-35-1974-1989-HOF 5. Alabama-33-1980-2011-HOF-AOD (1980s) 6. Kenny Chesney-30-1997-2018 7. Charley Pride-29-1969-1983-HOF 8. Eddy Arnold-28-1947-1968-HOF 9. Tim McGraw-28-1994-2016 10. Blake Shelton-27-2001-2020 11. Alan Jackson-26-1991-2010-HOF
At one time, Jackson had seventeen more chart toppers than Shelton. I am showing the chart where Shelton was tops with his first single, Austin from 2001. It is the chart where he was #1 for the fifth and final week. Downward and at #9 was Jackson with his soon to be chart topper, Where I Come From. Fast forward nineteen years and now Shelton has more #1s than Jackson and is in all-time top ten list of those with the most #1s. You have to admit, Shelton is in good company.
BILLBOARD TOP TEN FOR WEEK ENDING SEPTEMBER 8, 2001: 1. AUSTIN-BLAKE SHELTON-WARNER BROS. 2. I'm Just Talkin' About Tonight-Toby Keith-DreamWorks 3. Where The Blacktop Ends-Keith Urban-Capitol 4. What I Really Meant To Say-Cyndi Thomson-Capitol 5. Only In America-Brooks & Dunn-Arista 6. I Would've Loved You Anyway-Trisha Yearwood-MCA 7. Angry All The Time-Tim McGraw-Curb 8. Downtime-Jo Dee Messina-Curb 9. WHERE I COME FROM-ALAN JACKSON-ARISTA 10. When I Think About Angels-Jamie O'Neal-Mercury

I’m proud to say in my lifetime I seen King George break Conway’s record but here’s a question. Who do you think if anyone would break King George’s hit total? I’d have to say Blake Shelton or Luke Combs.

I’d have to say Blake Shelton or Luke Combs. Kenny Chesney could do it if he has a very good 2020s decade. He's only thirteen #1s behind George Strait.

I think it'll be quite difficult for anyone to beat George at this point. The charts move too slowly, the age discrimination hits a little younger, artists are releasing albums slower, labels are more likely to push for Mediabase-only #1s.... Not saying it's impossible, but I think it'll be very difficult. I think the closest people like Kenny/Tim/Keith will lose relevance sooner rather than later, and certainly do not have an entire decade of consistent #1s left in them. 13 #1s is not a small feat; for Kenny to do that, he would have to get #1s in every year of the next decade, plus a 2nd #1 in almost half of them. When George himself was their age, he only had 6 more Billboard #1s in him. (And they are all showing waaaay more signs of losing relevance than George was in 2004, which is when he was about their age, lol) Same thing with Blake Shelton/Luke Bryan/Jason Aldean... they are only sitting at about half of George's total, and they are all pretty close to 5 years older than George was when he was at their same total (going by Billboard #1s only, he hit 25 #1s in 1992/1993 at the age of 40). He picked up #1s for almost 20 more years at that point, and the chances of Blake/Luke/Jason continuing to hit #1 with all of their songs 20 years from now is pretty slim imo. They are all showing signs of having passed their prime, whereas George was arguably still approaching his prime at that point. Luke Combs is off to a great start, but can he sustain this red-hot momentum for the next 30 years? Imagine, Luke Combs in 2050, continuing to hit #1 every time out of the gate The way that the industry works nowadays, I just don't see it. But we'll see! George is the type of superstar that you just do not see very often. We will be very lucky if we get to see his replacement in our lifetimes. {Spoiler} Especially because he actually has 60 #1s, not 44

What are the songs from other genres of music that have been covered by a country artist and went to #1 on the country chart?
The few that come to mind are:
Mark Chesnutt - "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" (Aerosmith cover) John Michael Montgomery - "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" (All-4-One covers) Florida Georgia Line - "Stay" (Black Stone Cherry cover) Willie Nelson & Leon Russell - "Heartbreak Hotel" (Elvis cover)
I'm sure there are more but my brain just isn't working.

Both of the JMM songs were done by him first. All-4-One did them after he went to number 1.
