People still can't get enough of PITUSA, Down, and IGAFSame thing happened last holiday season with "Hot N' Cold". It had long since peaked, but it seemed like everyone who got an iTunes gift card was just buying it then (the week after Christmas) to add to their collection, using up some of the gift card money.

Nice to see that Fireflies has pulled back ahead of Bad Romance. Yeah, it's a good indication of a copycat of the Postal Service from 5 years ago doing better than someone with some semblance of original talent. Always good to see derivative blandness succeed over orginality.

BTW I'm off to brush my teeth with Jack Daniels. Are you hooking up with someone who looks like Mick Jagger?

This is all happening because of the end-of-the-year countdowns. All the big hits from earlier this year are picking up airplay, which is why they're rising on iTunes. That's really the only logical explanation here (I believe).

I believe the sales chart runs from Mon-Sun so the sales will reflect Mon-Thurs (Christmas shopping) and Fri-Sun (gift cards). Next week will largely be effected by those who were traveling and will use their gift cards when they get home.

I don't think the "gift card effect" will do much this week

:( I love Louboutins. Didn't Jennifer learn though that she needs someone else's song to succeed?

(Not to trivialize the comeback the song is making, as, after all, there are thousands of songs that will never get to be in the top 1000.) Also, interesting to see "Fifteen" at (what I think is) a new iTunes peak despite the airplay decline we're starting to see. Edit: Oh I guess Fifteen isn't declining on radio... I just made that assumption cuz it's dead at Country.

Consider that #200 is about 7000 (for all outlets combined) ; getting into the top 1000 might be good for about 1000 copies

Always good to see derivative blandness succeed over orginality. Ha ha! Lady Gaga is about as much of a produced pop star as it comes. Her "originality" is entirely personality. Whereas, Adam from Owl City writes all his own music and made one of the most unique hot 100 #1's of the decade. "Fireflies" is a far less derivative hit than just about anything else out there now.

I don't think the "gift card effect" will do much this week I think because of Christmas falling on a Friday that we might not quite see the "gift card" effect at all for the Hot 100. I mean, we will, obviously, but I don't think it will do much to affect a lot of the chart as previous years have cause the sales will end being split.

The last few years the week following Christmas has seen a short term, 1-week spike in downloads across the board on all songs
6 of the 10 most downloaded songs of the digital era came last year, the week after Christmas as people cashed in their gift cards that they got for Christmas. Download records were set in prior post-Christmas weeks as well
The "gift card effect" may be somehwat tempered this year as Christmas fell on Friday and Soundscan tracking week ends today
