Janet's follow-up to the monster "Rhythm Nation 1814" album came in the form of "janet." on May 18, 1993. Prior to recording "janet.", Janet starred in Poetic Justice, opposite Tupac Shakur. During filming, Janet channeled her inner around-the-way, ghetto fabulous girl.....revealing a sexual awakening in Janet.
The "janet." album spawned six major hits:
That's the Way Love Goes (#1 Hot 100) If (#4 Hot 100) Again (#1 Hot 100) Because of Love (#10 Hot 100) Anytime, Anyplace (#2 Hot 100) You Want This (#8 Hot 100)
A seventh airplay only track, "Where Are You Now", also performed very well and would have easily place a seventh top 10 on the Hot 100. (#1 perhaps???)
Janet received an Oscar nomination for "Again", which was the theme track for Poetic Justice.
B-sides included "One More Chance", "70's Love Groove" and the very popular "And On And On".
Full tracklisting:
"Morning" – 0:31 "That's the Way Love Goes" (Janet Jackson, James Harris III, Terry Lewis) – 4:25 "You Know..." – 0:12 "You Want This" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 5:05 "Be a Good Boy" – 0:07 "If" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 4:31 "Back" – 0:04 "This Time" (featuring soprano by Kathleen Battle) (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 6:58 "Go on Miss Janet" – 0:05 "Throb" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 4:35 "What'll I Do" (Jackson, Steve Cropper, Joe Shamwell) – 4:05 "The Lounge" – 0:15 "Funky Big Band" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 5:22 "Racism" – 0:08 "New Agenda" (featuring rap by Chuck D) (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 4:00 "Love Pt. 2" – 0:11 "Because of Love" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 4:20 "Wind" – 0:11 "Again" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 3:47 "Another Lover" – 0:11 "Where Are You Now" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 5:47 "Hold on Baby" – 0:10 "The Body That Loves You" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 5:33 "Rain" – 0:18 "Any Time, Any Place" (Jackson, Harris, Lewis) – 7:08 "Are You Still Up" – 1:36 "Sweet Dreams"/"Whoops Now" (Jackson) – 5:33
The album was certifed 6x platinum by the RIAA, but is DEFINITELY in need of re-certification.

that album is flawless. i would say it's Janet's best work to date... (though my personal favorite is The Velvet Rope)
the ONLY song i don't ABSOLUTELY love is funky big band...but, still, i like it

It was my first full taste of Janet; I remembered the singles from Rhythm Nation and loved "The Best Things In Life Are Free", the year before, but when "That's the Way Love Goes" dropped, I was instantly hooked. Then, single after single, she turned me into a believer, LOL. It was a great era to witness.
As for the album, it took me a long time to fully digest it, but yeah, it's fantastic. I could do without "Funky Big Band" too, as I think it would work way better as an interlude. Also, it features "New Agenda", which I still rank as one of her best album tracks.

Janet went from pop to R&B to dance to hip-hop to jazz/big band. Midtempos, Uptempos, Ballads. This album truly has it all.
This was an amazing era for Janet.

Listening to Throb now. I fucking love this song.
And while I love about half the songs on this album, I dislike/am indifferent to the rest. So I'd rank this behind RN, VR, CTRL, DJ and AFY.

It's a good album- "Because of Love" and "You Want This" are the least essential of the singles, but, they're tolerable (I prefer BOL over YWT).
Among the album tracks, I always liked "The Body That Loves You," even though it gets some flack from other fans. "Where Are You Now" is a nice, sweet track. "New Agenda" may have been a better fit on Rhythm Nation (as that album had more social-oriented tracks). I always appreciate versatility, so I dig "What'll I Do."
"Whoops Now" is kinda dorky, but it's harmless fun.
Overall, it's not my favorite, but it's stronger than any of her 2000s albums.

This is my second favorite Janet album, (I like The Velvet Rope a tad bit more), but I REALLY love this. All the songs are flawless. I even really liked most of the interludes, especially 'Are You Still Up.' It's rare that someone can pull of a 27 track album, but she did.

Meh. I love the singles (bar "Because of Love") but I'm not a big fan of the album tracks. I can't stand "This Time".

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that I was serious.
I'd count "Throb" as a single though.

My second favorite Janet album. The only song I don't love is "What'll I Do". Everything else is magic. <3

This is my fifth or sixth fav Janet album, depending on the day, lunar phase, wind speed, etc.
LOVE If, TTWLG, ATAP, Again, Throb, YWT, WAYN, 70's Love Groove and And On And On. Not here for What'll I Do, Whoops Now, Because Of Love, Funky Big Band, New Agenda, The Body That Loves You or This Time.

'What'll I Do' is kind of a mess, but I still like it. I'm lukewarm to 'The Body That Loves You'.

Mistakenly wrote this off years ago as nothing more than radio-ready songs surrounded with a lot of padding. Later on I would realize there is just a little padding on what is a very rich album. (I imagine production costs would support that claim.) Also, highlights like 'What'll I Do', 'New Agenda', and 'This Time' aren't getting a fair shake here. I take it those who believe the contrary are the same folks who swear up and down Damita Jo is not some gooey mess.

^ Come on, 'Feedback' is a jam. As is 'Rollercoaster'. As is 'Luv'.
Now, when the ballads begin I get a little pissy. Just sayin'...

I also think Where Are You Now is one of her most beautiful ballads (and vocal performances), and would have made a nice closing single for the era. Nellee Hooper did a lush rhythmic remix of it that would have been perfect for R&B radio at the time. There was definitely minimal filler on here (The Body That Loves You and Funky Big Band come to mind, although I enjoy both). She - and Jam & Lewis - certainly had a knack for producing incredibly solid records with reams and reams of potential singles.
