Figured it was a good time to make this. He's been writing for awhile now and you can hear a bit of a song in the works in the backround of his new vlog.

He's going to need a huge smash... it seems like it has been ages since his music was on the radio.

I can't tell a thing about that new song in the background, except he's singing and there's a glory note. I think that Slezak interview that's supposed to post this week will be more helpful for next album speculation.
I agree that as far as pop is concerned, he needs just the right song - something practically undeniable and attention grabbing. HAC shouldn't be much of an issue.

If he can get one pop hit, I think he'll be good. He probably won't sell as much as the last album, simply because he was coming straight off Idol, and this year's Idol will be busy pimping up season 8's alumni. Plus, he may release in a lower-selling time of year.
Hopefully the choice of singles will be better this time, too.

It's nice to see that they are finally doing something small. But, I'm not expecting much in terms of promotion or chart performance. He has been a radio flop and I really don't see anyone making an effort to change that. It will be nice to get one more album from him though.

I'm actually really looking forward to this, as I am hoping for something better than his debut.

I'm looking forward to it as well. I just don't expect much from it even if the material is great. He would need label, management and radio support and he has none.

He has a dedicated fanbase that is still sticking with him two years after his season of Idol and he does get HAC support, I think he'll be fine. I doubt it will sell as much as his debut but I think it will do fine.

From MJs Blog David Cook Reveals Song Titles, Discusses Writing Process in New Idolatry Interview Lots of NEW ALBUM scoop in this latest David Cook interview with Michael Slezak of Entertainment Weekly. David is hard at work on his next album and working with familiar names like Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, David Hodges and Brian Howes. But, there are also new collaborators thrown into the mix, including, Max Martin, Claude Kelly, Tommy Hedrickson and Ryan Tedder.
A few songs titles David was willing to reveal: “You and I” and “Tonight is On Your Side” were written over a few, at times, difficult days with David Hodges. Another song he’s excited about is “With Me Empty” written with is bandmates, Neil Tiemann and Andy Skib. “Boomerang” was written with Brian Howes during a trip to Vancouver. For David, the songwriting process begins with chord progressions and the melody. He compares the process to his Idol days, when theme weeks helped to set parameters, allowing him to explore ideas. David’s evolving sound will incorporate more piano, and use the guitar as just another instrument rather than “the basis of the song”. watch the interview here: popwatch.ew.com/2010/02/08/david-cook-sophomore-album-scoop/

Some enterprising Cook fan out there needs to compile a list of everyone we know he's working with, the song titles we have, and all descriptive tidbits about the album so a proper speculative discussion can ensue.
No, I'm not gonna do it. But someone else can. Pretty please? LOL

He's going to need a huge smash... it seems like it has been ages since his music was on the radio. He still gets HAC and AC airplay. Tedder, Max Martin, Claude Kelly. Sounds like he doesn't wanna settle for HAC/AC though, good for Dave. I'm anxious to hear their influences in his music.

I'm actually impressed by the names he's working with. I love Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, and not to say that they haven't had some hits, but working with Martin, and Tedder will probably guarantee him at least one hit.

Sounds like he could be taking some risks with this record. Hey, paid off for him on idol.
It'd be really cool if he did an all vocal track. And the song with some synth? Sounds interesting.

Wow, really surprised at those collaborators... For some reason, I was expecting him to go into a more indie/rockish way for his sophomore album... But based in those names, they are really going for the Mainstream-Mature pop/HAC crowd, it makes sense though, after the success he had with his debut...

I doubt it will sell as much as his debut but I think it will do fine. I agree. If he can score a huge HAC smash / moderate pop hit and push 500,000 album units (or something close), I'd consider it a success for David. Gold certs should not be dismissed, especially when platinum looks like heaven nowadays. I really hope he does well. Well enough to stay afloat and maintain a decent career. I appreciate David and really feel his best work is yet to come. The debut just wasn't my thing, but I'm going to ride or die with him for awhile to see if he can grow to make music that is worthy of his talent. His potential is far too high for anything less than great.

^ Wow, that was really good. The crowd was really into it too. Everyone was jumping up and down. Definitely poppy/punk-ish.
Hope it's the first single.
Oh, and here's a little something that didn't make David's first album. It leaked yesterday.

So it looks like David Cook is mainly a co-writer. Is he strongest with the lyrics or the music? I follow Rob Thomas and I know he has had a few co-writes before (mainly with his producer) but he can write hits on his own. Having said that Rob has said several times that he is definitely the strongest writing lyrics and that sometimes he might need some help with the music (getting over the hump on a particular song). I'm interested in this type of thing. Just wondering what you all know about David's writing process to this point.
Using a lot of other big name writers and producers I guess helps with getting the buzz out there. You know...my favorite artist is working with David Cook...maybe I should check out his stuff. It never hurts although adding Ryan Tedder to the list doesn't win many points with me. Isn't his "sound" kind of played out right now?

One more comment but when I see an artist (one that is suppose to be the complete package) working with a lot of other people I naturally think that he just can't do it on his own. Kind of dimisses being a complete songwriter in my eyes. Other people obviously won't agree.
Anyway, I do agree that he seems to be going more pop on the album. I'll reserve further judgement until I hear the album but I agree with the person above who said they thought he would go more rock. I'm sure there will be rock on this album but it looks like he his getting the big names on board to get a hit. I guess at this pivotal stage in his career if he can't write a smash hit on his own then going outside to get one is really all he can do since he is certainly a radio artist at this stage in his career (he needs hits to sell albums and concert tickets). Most artists are radio artists unless you are Radiohead, Coldplay, DMB, etc., that can sell a fair amount of albums but EXCEL at the boxoffice. These acts don't need "hits" to sellout arenas. David is more like a Rob Thomas or a Daugthry that do need "hits" to sell well.

"You and I" is pretty much rock music 101. It's not great but it's not horrible either. Really on par with some songs that Nickleback and Daughtry have had hits with but their track record on radio is stronger than David's. I think he'll need something with a little more punch for a first single off the critical sophomore album. Hench, the reason for all the co-writers I guess. Hopefully, it pans out for him.

I like the new song. To me its hard to really tell anything about it though because 1. Cookie is known to change up songs a lot with each new performance of it and 2. I have no idea what will the recorded version will sound like. A lot can change with the way it is mixed and produced. We also have no idea if this a candidate for a single, much less a lead single. So we'll see. As far as co-writer vs full writer... I think that's another wait and see. For all we know the finished product will contain multiple songs written by only him (or at least him and his band). We really only know about what gets tweeted. We do know he is capable of writing by himself though... practically all of Analog Heart was him. Most artists are radio artists unless you are Radiohead, Coldplay, DMB, etc., that can sell a fair amount of albums but EXCEL at the boxoffice. These acts don't need "hits" to sellout arenas. One tiny quibble... everyone you mentioned was a radio hit at some point. They were able to keep going past that on the strength of their subsequent albums radio or no, but they got to the public eye in the first place by having hits.

Max Martin seems like an odd choice for Cook. He seems a little too pop. But I do like what Max did with Carolina Liar, so maybe it'll work.

True, Max Martin is a little too pop it seems, but Cook has been working with Claude Kelly too... so... I think it's obvious RCA wants a CHR hit.

I'm really excited for this. I hope he has more CHR success than he did the last time. I still hear CBTM on our HAC station ALL THE TIME though.

Yeah, I think its pretty clear RCA wants a pop friendly initial single. Whether he's really working with Max Martin or not, that seems to be where things are heading.
Martin did apparently work with Bon Jovi, the Veronicas, Carolina Liar and others, so I guess its makes about as much sense as Claude Kelly. We'll see what it sounds like, if they do end up working together. I'm Switzerland on this one.
