This was an argument in a post the other day and people could not come to a concensus. What do you think?

Yes. 'Obsessed' was a big hit only a few months ago.

Yes. 'Obsessed' was a big hit only a few months ago. "Obsessed" was a hit in January? ;) And the 50 singles since?

Is a Top 10 hit still relevant?

She had a top 10 hit almost a year ago then a bunch of huge flops and a flop album.

It's not like all her major successes were so long ago. She's definitely still relevant. Having one hit a year ago isn't really long enough a span to doubt someone's relevance. And Song of the Decade...I mean really? One flop album makes her irrelevant?

Just because someone had the biggest song of the decade doesn't mean anything about how relevant they are right now. That song was out 5 years ago already. She's had a bunch of huge flops in the time since.

We'll find out if she's relevant or not when she drops her GH and Xmas albums alter this year.

It's also the same argument as people who say she was one of the biggest artists of the past 20 years. Most of her success came in the 1990's. That was a long time ago already. That doesn't mean she is still relevant in 2010.

True, but conversely, just because she hasn't matched the success of the 90s, I don't think her successes since should be discounted. I'm not saying she necessarily will continue to be relevant, but having a multitude of other hits, including as recently as last year, precludes her irrelevancy just yet. There's no definitive time when someone can be deemed irrelevant, but in my opinion, I don't think she's hit that mark.

Is Mariah anywhere near as popular now as she was during the 90's or during TEOM era? No. Is she still relevant? Absolutely. She had a top 10 hit and one of her most quality and best-reviewed albums of her career less than a year ago. She had a #1 single and album (as well as one of the most popular videos of her career) only two years ago. She gets major Christmas airplay every year with AIWFCIY, meaning as recently as four months ago she had a big radio hit. She got critical acclaim and lots of good press for Precious, one of the most lauded films of last year. And though some people seem to think that 5 years was a very long time ago, TEOM and its hit singles are still fairly fresh in a lot of people's minds. So yes, Mariah's still relevant, and she still has the potential for more hit singles and albums in the near future. If you want to say her career is over, well then think back to 2001 when everyone was saying that and then see what she did only a few years later.

Mariah Carey was not 41 years old when people wrote her off after Glitter. Now she's in her 40's and pushing 200 lbs. The potential is not as great. She will probably spend the next 20 years or so between 200 and 250 lbs singing All I Want For Christmas on Christmas specials and performing at small one night only clubs aimed at middle aged people.

Obviously, that's the only song she will ever be remembered for Even if this ludicrous statement proves to be true, it doesn't mean she's irrelevant yet.

Most of her hits have proven not to be very memorable. That's fairly widely known. For someone who has had all the success she has had in her career she does not have as many memorable songs as someone like Madonna or even Whitney Houston. Only a few of her songs have really been memorable and that's not to say they're iconic.

Is she currently impacting any charts? NO. Is she hot on critics' lists at the moment? NO.
I wouldn't say she's totally irrelevant, but to say that she is still relevant as if she has done anything that notable in recent times is not the truth.

The Greatest Love of All, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and I Will Always Love You alone are all better known than just about any Mariah song except for maybe All I Want For Christmas. Now that's a fact.

She received a platinum certification less than a year ago for Obsessed. It's funny how people try to make it seem like she hasn't had a hit for years.

Now that's a fact. LOL. AIWFCIY and Whitney's cover of IWALY are on the same plane. TGLOA can't touch songs like "Hero" and Mariah songs such as "Hero" are on the samle plane as IWDWS.

"Hero" and "The Greatest Love Of All" are both bland middle of the road songs. Neither one are that great.

Hero is probably Mariah's most covered song. Anyone who doesn't think it's a classic is insane.

I think she is just barely relevant. I think once she releases another flop album, she will no longer be relevant to the Pop music world. She will always be relevant in the AC world of music, IMO.

Of course Mariah is still relevant. The real questions are: Is she as relevant as she used to be? And will she ever be that relevant again?
The answer to the first question is easy; she is clearly not as relevant as she was in the 90's, or even during the EOM era. But the answer to the second question won't be answered until Mariah either succeeds or fails to engage the record buying/istening public in her future music.

The Greatest Love of All, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, and I Will Always Love You alone are all better known than just about any Mariah song except for maybe All I Want For Christmas. Now that's a fact. Nah. I'd be willing to bet that if you randomly stopped people on the street and asked them to name a few songs from both Mariah and Whitney, they'd have an easier time with Mariah than Whitney. 'We Belong Together', 'Touch My Body', 'Fantasy', 'Hero', 'All I Want For Christmas Is You', 'Obsessed' - anyone who even sporadically listens to pop or R&B would know those songs. Whitney definitely has a few memorable songs, but not as many as Mariah. Also, the younger generations are familiar with Mariah because of 'WBT', 'TMB', 'O' and 'AIWFCIY'. On the other hand, Whitney hasn't had a hit single in over a decade, and I'd say there's a good chance that most teens and pre-teens would be hard-pressed to list even one Whitney Houston song.

No one said "Hero" wasn't classic, boo. This is a recurring theme. Put words in the mouths of people you disagree with in order to make it sound like you're the one who is right. No one said Hero isn't a classic but it's one of Mariah's few memorable songs. The point is that Mariah Carey has had 18 #1 hits and a slew of other hits and she and her fans pride themselves on all those hits yet the only ones that are really remembered are probably Vision of Love, Hero, All I Want For Christmas and maybe We Belong Together. That one was still very recent and very big to really be able to decide the fate of that one yet. One Sweet Day was absolutely enormous and the biggest hit of the 90's yet is basically forgotten now. Having such a lack of memorable songs is going to help her slip into irrelevancy much quicker. Whereas someone like Madonna can continue to perform her catalog of pop classics, there aren't too many songs that people are going to be dying to hear Mariah perform in the next 20 years after her radio career has deteriorated.
