Beach Boys' Threaten Suit Over Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' Threat comes after both writers of the original 'California Girls' praised Perry's song.
By Gil Kaufman
Katy Perry is having an epic summer thanks to her smash hit "California Gurls," which has sold more than 3 million copies already and topped the singles charts for weeks. But the soon-to-be-wed pop star and Rolling Stone cover girl may end up sharing some of the proceeds from that track with the pop icons who first sang the praises of West Coast beauties.
According to the New York Post, representatives for the Beach Boys are threatening to sue Perry for including the classic line "I wish they all could be California girls" in her tune. The line is lifted from the Boys' 1965 rock classic "California Girls," and the paper reported that publishing reps at the Boys' Rondor Music have sent a letter to Perry's label demanding that the original song's writers, Mike Love and Brian Wilson, be given a writing credit on "Gurls" as well as a share of royalties.
Spokespeople for Perry and the Beach Boys could not be reached for comment by MTV News at press time.
An unnamed recording industry source reportedly told the paper: "Rondor Music has sent a letter to Capitol on behalf of Mike Love and Brian Wilson, saying Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties."
The iconic line is rapped by Snoop Dogg near the end of Perry's song ("California girls, man/ I wish they all could be California Girls"), which, ironically, was recently praised by Love. "The subject matter is still in vogue — just ask Katy Perry. I think the part she did is pretty cool. There are a lot of writers on it, and I think it's probably a stroke of genius to have the king of canine cool, Mr. [Snoop] Dogg, do his thing. But I think her creative part, her musical part, is pretty hooky. I think it brings the Beach Boys' 1965 classic to mind, that's for sure," Love told Billboard. Wilson has called the song "infectious."
Sources reportedly told the Post that Wilson and Love asked Rondor to send the letter, but spokespeople for the musicians said it was Rondor's decision. "Rondor owns the track and called Brian and Mike, saying they were going to complain. Brian likes Katy's record and doesn't know where the situation stands," according to Wilson's rep, while Love's rep added, "Mike and Brian wrote the song ... but any legal action is up to Rondor."

Beach Boys' Threaten Suit Over Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' Threat comes after both writers of the original 'California Girls' praised Perry's song.
Katy Perry's uber-popular hit single, "California Gurls," has been stirring up controversy this week, as rumors flew that the Beach Boys were suing the singer over use of their famous lyrics. But Perry says the talk of a lawsuit is all nonsense. On Wednesday, the New York Post reported that the folks at Rondor Music, who own the rights to the Beach Boys' classic song "California Girls," thought Perry's summer tune was a rip-off of the 1965 original. Reports said they were threatening to sue Perry on behalf of co-writers Brian Wilson and Mike Love ... even though neither of them has any problem with the 2010 homage! You may be thinking: But the two songs don't sound anything alike! They don't even spell "girls" the same way! You would be correct. The issue is that Snoop Dogg's rap interlude includes one line from the Beach Boys' song: "I wish they all could be California girls." And so, according to an industry source, "Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so Love and Wilson should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties." According to Perry, there's no truth to the reports of a legal battle. In fact, she took to Twitter Thursday to put the kibosh on the lawsuit rumors, once and for all. "And just to be clear...no one is suing anyone," she wrote. "The press just loves to once again fabricate & exaggerate stories to get hits or sell papers." Perry has admitted that "California Gurls" is a tribute to the Beach Boys, and both Love and Wilson have said they were flattered by the catchy tune. Love called Snoop's rap "a stroke of genius;" Wilson said the tune was "infectious." And he even joked that he had a special connection with Katy Perry: "We have a lot in common now. We both have done songs called 'California Girls' and we've both kissed girls and liked it."

Katy Perry Says She Wrote 'California Gurls' Out Of Jealousy 'I thought it would be perfect timing for a California anthem,' she says of her response to 'Empire State of Mind.'
By Jocelyn Vena (@jocelyn1212) , with reporting by Sway Calloway (@realsway)
"California Gurls" came out of a very simple place: as a response to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys' massive hit "Empire State of Mind." While "Empire" was incredibly New York, with a sweeping chorus and plenty of Big Apple references, Perry's ode to her home state was glossy and shiny and featured Cali MC Snoop Dogg.
Perry said the song is just what California needed. "[California girls] are different," she said about Teenage Dream's debut single. "That's why there needed to be a song about them. I felt like there's something in the water. Like, you know the boys always dream about maybe dating a California girl, just because we've got the sun shining through 365 days a year."
According to the song, Cali not only has the sun, it also has palm trees, sun-kissed skin and girls so hot they will well melt your Popsicle. That is pretty scalding! Perry's intent was to conjure up sexy images about her beloved state.

"When I came up with the idea of 'California Gurls,' it was because I was a little bit jealous of all the love that was given to the East Coast, and I thought for sure Tupac was rolling in his grave, and the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson was totally upset ... like, 'What is up with that?' " she said.
Perry took it upon herself to do them proud. "I thought it would be perfect timing for a California anthem, and especially one from a female perspective, because there's never really ever been a female perspective about California," she said. "And everyone wondered about our little state."
Don't get Perry wrong: She means no disrespect to her East Coast counterparts. "I love New York girls," she clarified. "I think they're hot, and I think they have a lot of attitude, but I'm telling you: When it comes wintertime, they're all gonna be singing 'California Gurls.' "

This song came on at the bar tonight and I was SHOCKED to hear everyone say that they still love this song more than they did when it was at its height of popularity. Everyone I saw was singing along and looked like they were still loving this song. What a classic jam
