Its called Justin Bieber. Chelsea Lately (Chelsea Handler's show) has its own youtube page where it will post the interviews after the show, and all of Justin's have like 5x the amount of views as the rest. That's simply cause little girls rule youtube. And you don't think they can rule TV either? Believe me, I don't like the Biebz, but he's insanely popular.

It has always been my belief that ratings for shows depend on a lot of different factors some of which don't even really relate to who shows up. Shows held on certain days, for example, have varying success ratings-wise. I don't see it as much lately, but it always used to drive me crazy when people would say the shows entire ratings depended on ONE artist and ONE ARTIST ONLY even when crunching actual ratings numbers refutes that. They had a great year because of varied performers with varied audiences, appearances by the biggest stars today, and probably a multitude of other factors like timing and just plain old maybe America is in the mood for the VMAs.

Oh I agree. It's never just one artist or anything. This years was really talked up and hyped up too. Despite it being rather boring in the end.
Also, Chelsea was on Leno last week promoting it. Is it normal for hosts to be promoting the VMAs? I don't remember any of the hosts doing so, but I could be wrong.

To me the main reason the ratings were so high is due to the Kanye/Swift thing last year. Many people tuned in just to see if something similar would happen again this year. And, of course, to see what both would have to say about it.

Yeah, I also agree the ratings are due to last year's moment with Kanye and Taylor(I'm mean come on, that's all people talked about the moment it happened, lol), but also because of the over-all greatness that was last year with performances, Gaga, etc.

Am I the only one (almost) who think this year's show was very good. Great performers: Linkin Park, Florence & co, Eminem, Paramore, deadmau5.... Justin Bieber was there and you know how popular he is Kanye West's new song is brilliant (similar hype around him as 2008 when he closed the show with Love Lockdown premiere) Gaga also performed despite not singing but she can be counted as a performer in a way. Brilliant host
One Beyonce here or there wouldn't had made any difference to ratings or the quality of the show.
The only thing that the show really lacked was a true legend performer: last year we had The tribute to MJ featuring Janet and Madonna. Prince would have been truly amazing. And I'd would LOVE to see one of the kings of videos George Michael in an awards show at least once.
Great job MTV imo

GaGa owned and sounded amazing on her 'performance' too. I thought Chelsea kinda sucked (except for the auto-tuned 'Jason Deruuulo' hahah).

www.eonline.com/uberblog/the_awful_truth/b200048_taylor_swift-kanye_west_duet_never_was.htmlThe Taylor Swift-Kanye West Duet That Never WasToday 8:54 AM PDT If you thought Taylor Swift's performance at last night's MTV Video Music Awards—in which she replayed Kanye West stage-jacking from last year then crooned about how he's still growing but remains innocent…uh, we think—was a tad uncomfy, you're not the only one. Certain MTV execs were not pleased with Ms. Swift's performance—or lack-there-of, as it might be. Not only did her appearance leave some viewers scratching their heads, but Tay also shied away from a proposed duet between the two superstars—according to impeccable MTV sources. Keep in mind this was never an official duet planned by the hip network, but, merely one several key MTV players were very much pushing for. For the record, MTV was gaga on everything Taylor. Certainly its president, Van Toffler, who said, "There was never a plan for Taylor Swift and Kayne to perform together and we were absolutely thrilled with her performance." Also, Swift's reps claim likewise—that there was never any kind of a request or a push for such a joint performance. Which is unlike what other uber-inside MTV sources are telling us. But, alas, that's what a goss column's for, right? Before we get to rest of the good dirt, trust us, folks in the Nokia Theatre, where the VMAs were held, were just as confused listening to T.Swift—wandering around her bizarre broken down home set sans shoes and singing a little ditty that everyone knew was addressed to the Kanye—as we're sure you viewers at home were. "The house is dead! The house is dead!" An überpowerful source that helped plan the night cried as Tay slowly walked back across stage after her performance to silence from the stunned crowd. And not stunned in a good way, that's for sure. The whole performance was over-the-top melodramic—Taylor's signature style, natch—for an incident that, in retrospect, really wasn't a big deal. And from a gal who is supposedly totally over the whole ordeal, no less. Guess not, huh, Taylor? 'Cause if Tay put the incident in her past, then she'd be up to show there are no hard feelings by taking the stage with Mr. West himself, which everyone at MTV and Team Kanye thought would happen. Yep, despite what's been reported, a performance was proposed for Taylor to take the stage and help Kanye close the show, finally putting to rest the ordeal that everyone else is so dunzo with. The only person left to sign up for the onstage show of forgiveness (and, let's be honest, a huge press moment for both of the two, no doubt) was Taylor. And she reportedly took her sweet time deciding…Like the entire friggin' show. Apparently, Tay refused to go on with Kanye, and she had people from MTV, Camp Kanye and her own folks working on overdrive throughout the duration of the show to see if she'd change her mind. Guess she never did. "Well, she's a major-ass rising talent, girl's got her right, right?" Sorry but this article is bullshit. Taylor left the VMAs venue immediately after her performance of Innocent. There was no staying around trying to decide whether to join Kanye for a duet onstage.

Tayler Swift sounded like a vindictive bitch for something that wasn't really that big of a deal.
Instead Kanye killed it with his performance..... mark my words, his new single (with having toasts for douchebags, etc.) will become an anthem type of single..... and it will be huge.

Tayler Swift sounded like a vindictive bitch for something that wasn't really that big of a deal. Vindictive how?The song she sang was basically about forgiveness, seeing the best in him and wishing for Kanye to make a fresh start.Basically ALL that he's been tweeting about recently--about being given a second chance. Hard for you to imagine but it's seems clear Taylor wants Kanye to do well and isn't bent on punishing him.Anyone who bothers to pay even the slightest attention to the lyrics of the song can tell immediately. Personally I think all the fake outrage last year and this year is largely manufactured. There were anti-Kanye fans last year who just wanted a chance to get at him and used VMAs 2009 as an excuse to jump on him while posing as Taylor fans.Similarly this year, with all the success that Taylor has had in 2008/2009,the anti-Taylor brigade was just waiting for any excuse to bash her and they used this year's VMAs as a pretext. It's too soon to judge how much of the reaction is genuine general public sentiment and how much is just due to a small vocal minority of anti-Taylor fans. For what it's worth,Speak Now is in the top 5 Amazon album sales(peaked at #2 just yesterday) and that's for a pre-release which is only going to drop on Oct 25,one and a half months from now. :o www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/music/ref=pd_ts_zgc_m_music_mor1?pf_rd_p=1261650102&pf_rd_s=right-3&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=5174&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0DN3PFEN3WP7NW4MWEDD

Taylor's performance was really funny tho, had to laugh at the end when the song was over and she looked into the crowd with those sad teenage eyes acting like she just got done with some cancer treatments being a "survivor" and that lil slow walk she did towards the backstage...just too much!

The entrance was brilliant "We didn't get further on the rehearsal" lol Also, Usher did a great job and I can understand why Bieber lipsynched - it was his first really big performance. But it was hilarious to watch him jumping around with the perfect singing

You'd want her to prance around and smile after performing such a song? She was clearly emotionally invested in the performance, which is never a negative. Anyone whose watched her perform ballads before knows she becomes really expressive and emotive with those types of songs live (see "White Horse" at the American Music Awards in 2008). I actually love when singers do this (it's one of the main reasons why I love Celine Dion so much). In the same way I want to see hair being flicked and tossed in a sassy performance (think Britney), I want to see the appropriate expressions for a ballad. I'm also skeptical of just how big this Taylor backlash is offline. None of the entertainment programs who've covered the VMAs I've seen have spoken negatively about her and I haven't really heard any rumblings of negativity anywhere else outside of (certain places on) the internet.

I liked the song Taylor sang. I just wish she knew how to sing live, she has to be one of the pitchiest singers of all time.

I think her voice is typical voice of a country singer
It's just that it doesn't work very well in pop and the difference between her singing live and on (pop) record is huge.
Both Mine and the song she sang at the VMAs (Innocent?) are decent imo

Many country singers can outsing Taylor, who's an average singer at best. Carrie would wipe the floor with her in a sing-off.
