I alternate between this and her debut album as my favorite albums of her's. This album has really great urban songs like "The Roof" and "Breakdown" and great lyrical content with songs like "Close My Eyes" and "Outside," but there are also some songs on this album that I'm not so crazy about like "Whenever You Call". Her debut album isn't as great artistically, but it sounds like one hit after another. Almost everything on that album could have been a hit in the late 80s/early 90s.

This is definitely my favourite from Mariah, and possibly (probably) my favourite album of all time. It also holds the distinction of being the only Mariah album I actually own. Oop. Ranking:
1. The Roof 2. Breakdown 3. Close My Eyes 4. My All 5. Honey 6. The Beautiful Ones 7. Babydoll 8. Fourth Of July 9. Whenever You Call 10. Outside 11. Butterfly 12. Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)
And then you casually walked in the room... and I was twisted in the web of my desire for you...
Wait. I also own Merry Christmas. Whatever.

Its a great album. I love most of the songs.
Butterfly and My All are 2 of the best songs she's ever recorded IMO. Technically, what she does with Butterfly its jaw-dropping. She slays that song!(my 2nd favorite song of all-time from MC) And her vocals in My All are so buttery and smooth, I fall in love with it all over again everytime I hear it. So beautiful.

I really love this album because you could tell it represented Mariah doing exactly the type of music she wanted to make. The urban influences, the writing, the directional statement and the raw-ness stand out the most to me on this album much more than her voice, which is what most of her fame was founded on until this album.

The Roof is really the fan favorite off this one, eh? I don't like the title song that much but this album is one of her most solid efforts.

Butterfly is one solid album. It's up there with her debut and Emancipation of Mimi as my favorite offering from her. All of the songs are great and wonderfully written. I love the R&B/Hip Hop fusions on "Breakdown" and "The Roof". "My All" and "Butterfly" are my favorite ballads. "Babydoll" is one I revisit the most because it sounds so much like Aaliyah's "One In A Million".

This is my favorite album from her. Everything about the production was spot-on. It still sounds fresh today.
I like or love all of the songs. It's hard to choose favorites as I like them all, but I especially love "The Roof", "Outside", "Butterfly", "Breakdown", "My All", "Close My Eyes", "Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise)", and "Honey."

This album is a classic for me and the best lyrical and conceptual lp of hers. From the sexy and silky Honey, to the Quiet storm hip-hop stylings of the Roof, to the fast paced r&b slick Breakdown, the sultry spanish guitars of My All, to the emotional and vocally challenging Butterfly, to the sensual baby making Babydoll, to the inspirational Outside, to vivid deeply personal Close My Eyes. She shows a very personal, artistic, well written and steeped in talent side like never before. Her best productions and video concepts easily. A blueprint for other pop and r&b divas and an album that will stand the test of time because its as fresh today as back then. One thing that people don't give credit for is how ahead of the times this album really was. I feel sad for anyone who can't appreciate how this album is far superior than what is been given to us lately by "singers"

Hands down, this is one of Mariah Carey's best CDs-it is sophisticated and classy while also being really fun. The songs do not sound dated either, which is great.

Her masterpiece. It's really perfect. To go from this to Rainbow was a mess - but then, Madonna and Janet also experienced a significant drop-off in quality with their next albums following their 1997/1998 masterpieces.

This is her best album by far. There's not a single sour spot. I literally could listen to it every day for the rest of my life and never get tired.
While I understand the criticism of TBO cover, I like the different take. I do think Sisqo has some of the passion found in the original, while Mariah is lacking on that front for most of the song.

Her best.
"Honey" was the song that completely changed my perception of Mariah, and its absolute Pop perfection. My All is absolutely gorgeous, and Whenever You Call never fails to give me chills. Outside is so beautifully emotional, too.

Is the best sequence of songs on any Mariah album. It's just so perfect.

My favorite album from her. A great cap to a string of great work she had from the beginning of her career until then. The quality of her material fell on all levels drastically after this for a period. It's easily her sexiest record, and probably the only one that maintains that allure throughout. She's never really managed to come across as sexy and sensual over an entire album afterwards.
It's also aged surprisingly well considering when it comes from as well, especially compared to the projects her contemporaries had out at the same time.

I was listening to it last night... I just love it. Far and away her most personal, best structured and confessional record. It's full of career songs: "Close My Eyes" is stunningly poetic and I can listen to it for days, "The Beautiful Ones" is one of her most breathtaking covers (her voice oozes with soul and pain), "Outside" is arguably her most relatable song, "The Roof" is my favorite Mariah song lyrically ever and I love its mysterious sexy vibe, "Butterfly" is my favorite song on the album and a perfect song in every way, "My All" is romantic and classy and I liked the change it represented in her balladry at the time, "Fourth of July" is dreamy and it has one of my favorite Mariah bridges, "Breakdown" has always been special song to me in that its music and production bear an antithesis to its subject matter and lyrics (at least the way I hear it) so I love it for that, "Honey" is hotness personified and one of her best uptempos, finally I can appreciate the sentiment in "Whenever You Call," but it's the only song on the album I've never really loved. Overall, as I said, this is definitely one of her best records. Her vocals have never sounded more emotional and expressive; her lyrics more evocative and vivid; the whole album creates an atmosphere and mood that it's hard not to get lost into. She was totally on a creative high with this album.

When I first got this cd I remember being slightly disappointed. It was slightly to RnB for me. Though I LOVED a lot of tracks from it. I was just used to basically liking a whole Mariah cd and a few of the songs I just out right skipped. My favorites from here are "My All" which along with it's Urban remix is probably in my Top 3 MC songs. I also instantly Loved "Whenever You Call" which I thought had the potential to be a big hit. "Honey" I liked from the get go along with "Outside" which I always found to be a very touching song. "Breakdown" took me awhile to get into but I still listen to it on occasion. I liked "the Roof" at first but I kind of think it drags on a little to long. "Butterfly" took me awhile to get into and at first I wasn't used to Mariah whispering through a ballad. However when it clicked it clicked. The only song I really don't like on this cd now is probably "The Beautiful Ones" I find it very boring. Once I got used to Mariah's newer sound I started appreciating this cd as a whole a lot more.

I liked it much better than Daydream. More mature and less light hearted. More inspirational with more soul. I love the message behind the Butterfly song. Breakdown, Baby doll, and Fourth of July are my favorites. .
