Straight rapping won't sell her records though. This kind of stuff will.

I'm not sure if I completely agree with that.

Straight rapping won't sell her records though. This kind of stuff will. Yeah I disagree. Work it by Missy was a huge hit on pop and otherwise and it was all rap. If the rap is good enough it can appeal to a pop audience and nicki is definitely good enough

Work It by Missy was a hit in 2002. CHR was very different then, rap was the big thing. When was the last time a rap song hit on CHR with absolutely no hook or melody? I can't even remember. Pop simply doesn't play straight up rap anymore, look at what happened with Kanye's Power and he was coming off of a fairly successful CHR era.
If she wants mainstream pop success, she can't do just rap. That said...I don't like this at all. It's very watered down, doesn't even seem like a Nicki song. But I'm not a big fan of will.i.am or his sound so that could be why. I could see this being a hit, though.

She's guided to balance the pop with urban fare to maximize sales and maintain street credibility.

I don't think the discussion had anything to do with "mainstream pop success". It was about selling records. Scoring hits on pop doesn't guarantee new artists anything when it comes to album sales. Ask Jason DeRulo. To say that a female rapper should stick to these sugary sweet elementary songs to be successful makes no sense.

The promo cd leaked online and the final version is nice.
Its labeled on the promo cd as Nicki F/William, via Young Money Entertainment.

I can't imagine this being the 2nd single from Pink Friday. Nicki doesn't even come in until over a minute into the song. The Nicki on her last few guest verses is the Nicki that needs to show up on her next single. This is catchy, but she can't be serious. Urban better get something amazing. Incorrect. The :15 second mark actually.

I like the beginning. The rest of the song falls flat for me though. I find the chorus particularly bland.

Did you see Drake releasing Pop mixes of "Best I Ever Had" to radio last year? Even though Nicki wants to sell records, I don't think she's trying to emulate Drake's formula. Yes, Young Money has it set up that Nicki and Drake are Urban artists with Pop versatility (rap + singing = gold). But at the same time I think Nicki is still creating an image of her own through her appearances and music, and she doesn't want to be compared to Drake in that aspect. Also, in regards to her sales, I think its already set in stone that Nicki isn't Jason Derulo or any other big hit/s**t album artist. She's already set a bar high for herself with multiple features on big artists' records and has quite a broad audience that is aware of an upcoming album release. The new single she puts out has high expectations from the public as well. In no way had Jason Derulo (or any artist of his caliber) set a level that high when his album was released. The pressure is on for her so its different.

KMVQ in San Francisco has already spinned this over 30 times. KAMP in LA has jumped on it too.

I like this, it's much better imo than "Your Love."
