I just saw on the R&R website that part of Mediabase's expansion strategy will be the monitoring of select markets in Canada. Perhaps this will bring about the end of the shroud of secrecy that the BDS monopoly has regarding Canadian airplay trends - data that only select industry elitists can access. I only hope Mediabase does not adopt the same stupid BDS policies that lump different formats together for certain format charts.

This is definitely good news for us - people who really want to know how certain songs are doing in Canada. Have they given any dates as to when this tracking may start?

The latest word is that Mediabase plans to start monitoring 90+ Canadian radio stations in January 2004.

I superduper hope that they put the airplay trends on their website so we can check them out. That's REALLY cool! Imagine having all of the information we have for the US stations with Canadian stations!

Considering all of the country stations Canada has, Halifax has at least 6 stations. One CHR/Hot AC station (LOL!), a rock station, a classic rock and three country stations. Plus whatever else is on the FM dial that I've never explored.

I always wondered about #1 songs in the UK and stuff. I mean, it's a pretty small area.... how many stations are exactly in the UK?

The UK has such a big market for singles and stuff and Germany and France and such but their populations aren't *THAT* high. I wonder how big radio and video stations are in the whole music scene in those countries?

The latest edition of "The Essential Contact: Canada's Music & Entertainment Industry Directory" lists over 600 radio stations in Canada. BDS currently monitors 114.

I could be wrong, but I thought the UK has a population of just under 60 million people... which is kind of a lot. Its just that they're squished into such a small area.. and yet much of Great Britain manages to be countryside.
