After forging a comeback last year with the release of his new album 'Second Chance,' El DeBarge has fallen off the sobriety wagon. The falsetto crooner, whose history with substance abuse has long been documented, has voluntarily checked himself back into a rehabilitation facility to seek treatment for an assumed relapse.
"I hate to disappoint my fans but it is necessary for me to take the time to work on me so that I may continue to share my music and mystory with everyone," said the singer in a statement. "I thank everyone in advance for their prayers and well wishes and hope that you will respect my privacy during this time."
The 49-year-old has been battling drug abuse for the past decade. In 2001, he was arrested for cocaine possession, and was again detained in 2006 for possession of a controlled substance. DeBarge was set to hit the road with headlining act KEM and opener Ledisi on an upcoming tour, but was replaced by Musiq (Soulchild) earlier today.
The Michigan native, formerly a member of his family's group DeBarge, most recently released his fifth album 'Second Chance' last November. He opened for Mary J. Blige on her North American tour, and gave a standout performance at the 2010 Soul Train Music Awards.

well a drug addiciton is a hard battle, especially when you have been on drugs as long as he was. Its great that he checked himself into rehab. It shows he is serious about living a cleam life. I commend him.

EL DEBARGE ARRESTED for Drug Possession"Rhythm of the Night" singer El DeBarge was arrested for drug possession in L.A. yesterday ... and cops believe El may have been trying to deal the junk. El was popped around 2 PM in Encino, CA ... after LAPD officers observed him participating in what appeared to be a drug deal with another man near the 101 Freeway. DeBarge was arrested for possession of narcotics with intent to sell. It's the 3rd time El has been arrested for drug possession since 2001. He was hauled to a nearby jail where he was booked and released on $30k bail. El is due back in court next month. The other reports I read said Chico was the one locked up but I doubted it.
This is just embarrassing. The last thing he needed was a return to the spotlight. Focus on getting sober and clean once and for all.

I hate when labels try to push their artists out there and force a comeback by deceiving the public into believing the artist turned their life around. He launched back into the spotlight and right back into making headlines for drug arrests. The artist's well-being should come first, but businessmen in the music industry always have their bank accounts in mind...  |

EL DEBARGE Off the Hook After Drug Arrest
"Rhythm of the Night" singer El DeBarge is in the clear after he was arrested for drug possession this week -- because the L.A. County D.A. has declined to file charges.
According to official D.A. documents, the case was rejected due to insufficient evidence.
TMZ broke the story ... DeBarge was arrested on Tuesday for felony possession of narcotics with intent to sell -- the singer's third drug arrest since 2001.
According to the docs, police officers noticed DeBarge and another man speaking on the street -- and for some reason, decided to search them ... without giving a reason why.
After searching them and coming up with nothing -- cops claim they perused the surrounding area ... and found a baggie of rock cocaine hidden under a nearby car.
The other man insisted he was there to buy the rock from DeBarge -- but DeBarge denied the accusation ... and the D.A. decided there wasn't enough evidence to make the charge stick.

Arrested last week for vandalism.
The singer, whose real name is Eldra Patrick DeBarge, got into an argument Friday night in California and chased a man out of a house, TMZ reported. The unidentified man then ran to hide in an RV, where 57-year-old DeBarge allegedly attacked the windshield with the tool. The man called the police, who arrested DeBarge for felony vandalism. He spent the night in jail before posting $20,000 bail. El DeBarge’s rep did not immediately return a request for comment.

I saw him last year live, he shook my hand and it was such an amazing moment for me. But during the entire live show I couldn’t help but think something was kind of up.
