new album is pretty horrible. downloaded the leak today. I've never been a big linkin park fan but i've always appreciated their music. The Catalyst is really the only tolerable song on the record.

Our studio has had the CD since last Monday. Have not wanted to hear it yet. What's up with so many second singles already?

^I don't think so. "The Catalyst", as electronic as it is, is much heavier than "Waiting For The End". If they don't pull "The Catalyst" right away, I think its run could take it a bit higher on the chart. If they pull the plug now, then maybe, but I don't think this song necessarily has more potential than "The Catalyst" on active.

new album is pretty horrible. downloaded the leak today. I've never been a big linkin park fan but i've always appreciated their music. The Catalyst is really the only tolerable song on the record. I was worried after hearing "The Catalyst" that "A Thousand Suns" would turn out to be their worst album to date given that the title is lyrically featured in the track..............and it is, having listened to it. The real irony plaguing this record is that, while they are truly ambitious in the sense of escaping the confides of their earlier albums..............they've actually produced their most cliche-ridden era to date, particularly on a thematic and lyrical level. As I feared, the whole album is awash in declarative political statements and apocalyptic imagery that ultimately say nothing that hasn't already been said (they even embed speech from political and social leaders over a number of tracks) that already made up much of "Minutes to Midnight". Obviously many of their original fans are going to complain about "selling out" by ditching nu-metal and moving onto a more electronica-direction...........but to me that's actually the closest thing to a best thing I can sense this era for them. It's the tired doom-and-gloom platitudes that tie this album's central theme together that I'm most critical of, as well as the pointless non sequiturs, which end up only making the album worse in that it just feels like an empty concept album. Honestly, there's only one track I even mildly liked, and that is "Iridescent". Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

I love the album and I think it may be one of my favorite albums from this year, if not the favorite. Then again, I am probably a lot easier to please.

A lot easier to please in general or you have a lot easier time being pleased by Linkin Park? Because even if you generally like music, that doesn't account for why you'd put it so high relative to other albums released this year. I haven't heard anything other than the three officially leaked "singles." So far I'd give "The Catalyst" an A, "Wretches" a B, and "Waiting" something lower than that, but I'm not sure how much lower yet.
But I already know that it's not gonna beat Deftones for album of the year.

The new Deftones album was hard for me to get into and it still is hard for me to gauge where I rank it compared to other Deftones albums. A lot of people are telling me they like it almost as much as White Pony but honestly I find I like Saturday Night Wrist a lot more. I'm just weird like that.
And I guess I must be easier to please in general because I listened to the album again and I think it's a ridiculously awesome piece of art. A musical journey from beginning to end that I am truly enjoying a whole hell of a lot. It may be my favorite Linkin Park album, although Minutes To Midnight is hard to top.

And I, like you, would put Saturday Night Wrist above White Pony as my favorite Deftones album coming into this era. I can't decide between Diamond Eyes and SNW though, but probably lean towards Diamond Eyes because it's newer, more consistent from song to song, and more impressive given the circumstances. SNW was the album that converted me from casual Deftones admirer to self-proclaimed fan. Diamond Eyes propelled them from my top 20 favorite bands dangerously close to my top 5 (Porcupine Tree, Sevendust, Fair To Midland, Karnivool, Dredg, Opeth So I guess Deftones is #7 then).

I don't know how this song is anything close to Active. Wretches, yes; Waiting, no.

The album is'nt that bad. The preview of "Waiting foir the End" wasn't enough to make a true judgement on. After hearing it all I think its the strongest song on the album but that "Wretches" song is not growing on me.
None of the songs on the album look like they'll do well on pop radio though.

I'd even prefer Buckcherry's "All Night Long" to "A Thousand Suns". Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus Isn't that being a little harsh? I don't think it is. At least "All Night Long" is a tight, concise set of songs, with a few cuts as uncreative as they may be, nonetheless appealing to listen to. It doesn't try to package itself as anything more than it really is, which is straight-up anthemic rock and roll. "A Thousand Suns" tries to be something much more than it really is, which is a bunch of thematic cliches embroidered together in musical theater. And, to me anyway, it's a total mess. On that ground alone I consider "All Night Long" the superior album. I know saying Hellyeah's "Stampede" would be pushing it admittedly but, honestly, even that is preferable to me by a whisker (I can always skip "Pole Rider" if I wanted to) as they at least let loose musically and evidently had a good time making that record. Linkin Park sound like they had high triglycerides perfecting theirs. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

I predict this will be their first album to fail to go Platinum altogether. I'm predicting final sales around 700,000 copies domestically. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

Not necessarily with this album having cliches cause Lord knows when I first heard The Catalyst I thought this was Linkin Park's attempt at an American Idiot or a Black Parade and hearing the album in full has done nothing to sway that opinion, I still find it incredibly enjoyable. Maybe it's a mess, but I find it to be a coherent mess and even though I share the band's opinion that the album should be treated as one giant song, I think some cuts like Waiting For The End, Blackout, and When They Come For Me can do some damage in the right places.

Love this...much better than The Catalyst. It's a pretty solid album...some of the experimental factors don't really work for me, but otherwise, I like it.

I still have not heard the album, but I agree completely with those ratings of the three songs, except maybe I'd give "The Catalyst" a B. I have a feeling that I'm either going to love or think the album is just decent since I've never even close to disliked anything Linkin Park has put out before. No doubt about it, whether most people hate it or not, will be probably the biggest debut of the year.

I actually enjoy this album. It's funny. This is probably one of my most anticipated albums of the year, aside from Sum 41's new one coming soon, so I actually got nervous listening to it. xD
First listen I'm kinda like...okay...well...that was interesting.
After about the fourth listen through, It's really growing on me. Wretches and Kings isn't though, I actually like that one least of the full songs (not including the intros)
I really like Burning In the Skies. I see that being this album's "Shadow of the Day".
When They Come for Me seems kind of like the Bleed It Out of this album, and Blackout seems like the "Given Up" (Though my only complaint about blackout is that the part where they remix the words "blackout" over and over gets a little annoying xD)
So in ways I find it similar to Minutes to Midnight, except with a whole new concept.
I see Iridescent kind of as the In Between/Leave Out all the Rest/Valentines Day of this album as well, with the softness aspect and Mike singing a bit as well.
And of course, the Catalyst is solid after you get used to this new concept they went in. I don't know. Maybe I'm a sucker for concept albums. I love The Black Parade and American Idiot.
Overall, I can't say I have a set favorite song yet, I'm still in the high point of this album, so I've been listening to really everything. Let's see if any songs have a lasting effect on me.
Edit: How did you guys feel about "The Messenger"? It was interesting hearing Chester tackle an acoustic song. I actually find it sort of refreshing.

I agree with your synopsis of the album as compared to Minutes To Midnight, and as for "The Messenger", it's a good song in general but I think Chester made a mistake by using his louder voice for the track because on an acoustic it comes off somewhat poorly, especially on the chorus. BTW, Sum 41 won't be out until 2011, if you're not aware.
