^ I think the direction of their new album will result in significant lower sales. At least initially -- it might always be the new "American Idiot".

slicknickshady has just exploded with excitement! Hardly. Now when they certify the MMLP and TES as Diamond ill explode with excitement. My thoughts on this is just...It's about time.

i personally belive its because they raised the price this year. when was the price risen (maybe it was mid-late 2009) They only raised the price on new tracks and those still sell just as well as they did before no older songs got the price increase too usually if they were released as singles

There are brand new tracks for $0.99 The price is variable.
But the reason for the negative percentage in sales can only be lower sales for catalog tracks. The new hits are not just selling the same as they did, they are selling even more (we now have songs easily topping 3 million and 4 million, for instance) than before the price increase.

I just bought some 99 cent tracks just the other day ??? The vast majority of the top 200 tracks are $1.29 A lot of the older and obscure songs are still 99 cents though. Or if a label really wants to push a song an extra bit then sometimes it's priced 99 cents.

I just bought some 99 cent tracks just the other day ??? There are some...but like Oops i did it again and stronger got price increases as well as new songs. 99cents are usually undiscovored artists or trying to get really big

For reference: itunes pricing tiers
iTunes New Prices, aka Variable Pricing By Sam Costello, About.com Guide See More About:itunes plusitunes featuresWhile the iTunes Store has long been known as the place that you can buy any song for US$0.99, with the advent of iTunes Plus, that changed. And, with iTunes Plus coming to the entire store – and DRM leaving – the pricing of music at iTunes changed substantially.
The structure of the new iTunes prices, called variable pricing, gives record companies – not Apple – control over the iTunes prices. In exchange, users get DRM-free music that sounds better (iTunes Plus is encoded at 256kbps, a higher rate than earlier music) – and a deal on upgrades.
iTunes' New Prices As of April 2009, songs sold at the iTunes Store will have a three-tiered price structure:
$0.69 - for back catalog songs $0.99 – for standard songs $1.29 – for new releases and popular tracks. The price given to a song will be set by the record company that owns the song

My original point, the lower pricing tiers, have likely been picked clean by those who have an interest in something not currently charting. This would explain the peak.
The hits are still selling as well as they always have and probably even better.
The same thing happened to CDs. The was an initial boom as people started to convert cassettes and vinyl over to CD, once they completed that, you had much slower growth and the start of the decline which has since accelerated for other reasons

Can someone provide a list of the albums being released next week? I want to know if Trey Songz stands a chance of getting his first #1 album. Thanks in advance!

That would be my guess
Although Robert Plant's last album was a big success

True, but we're only thinking about first week sales here. I know that a lot of LP fans weren't too fond of the last album, but I don't think it would lower this project's first week sales to the point where either Plant or Songz would be a thread.

I never even noticed- are there $.69 tracks at iTunes? I still see the occasional $.99, but I must have missed the $.69 ones. Nice that Relapse was certified- will it take a year for Recovery to be certified?

I don't know
As the note said, the record companies get to decide what a "standard" song is and what "back catalog" is
Obviously though, not everything is "popular" and sold at 1.29

How do you guys think Linkin Park will do on the charts when their album comes out next week? All their previous albums have sold like crazy, but "The Catalyst" does not seem to be a huge hit, and pales in comparison to "What I've Done". Do you guys think having a performance at the VMA's 2 days before the album comes out will have a big difference. Also, are the top 200 sales gone permanently? Linkin Park will debut at #1. That's a no-brainer. The two real questions are 1) "How much will they sell their first week out?" and 2) "Will this era have legs anywhere as long as those of previous eras?"Frankly, I think they're looking at sharp declines in both first-week figures and longevity this era. I think "A Thousand Suns" will be for Linkin Park what "Pop" was for U2. They'll nab their #1 debut and have superior sales in their first-week compared to most other artists..........but figures will also be well-off the 625,000 "Minutes to Midnight" shipped its first week of release, and I also predict a moderately nasty spill down the Billboard 200 in subsequent weeks. Really, I don't see them even going Platinum this era. Final domestic sales will tally around 700,000 copies, I'm predicting. Namaste, Lisping Hibiscus

Finally Eminem got it!Damn, i have been waiting for this for a long time. But maybe its because its moving too slow and might not go 3xp, anyways happy for Em! Recovery will most likely end up with 3xp at the end of the year.... "Recovery" will easily reach triple-platinum status by the end of the year. With the album yet to be buoyed by a holiday shopping season, I'd even argue there's at least a fair chance it will garner a quadruple-platinum certification before the holiday season comes to a close. It's another tight race for #1 next week as Sara Bareilles and Eminem go head to head. In his 12th week on the chart, Slim Shady will likely see a boost from his performance in the opening slot on this weekend's VMAs. Here's how it looks headed into the weekend.
*Sara Bareilles (Epic) 85-90k Eminem (Shady/Aftermath/Interscope) 85-90k Now 35 (Capitol/EMI) 75-80k Katy Perry (Capitol/EMI) 70-75k Disturbed (Reprise) 55-60k *Stone Sour (Roadrunner) 45-50k Camp Rock 2 (Walt Disney) 35-40k *Anberlin (Universal Republic) 35-40k *Interpol (Matador) 30-35k Justin Bieber (Island/IDJ) 27-30k Fantasia (J/RMG) 27-30k Usher (LaFace/JLG) 18-21k Lady Antebellum (Capitol Nashville/EMI) 18-21k Drake (Young Money/Cash Money/Universal Motown) 17-20k Kem (Universal Motown) 17-20k *Debuts (9/9p)

I think Eminem at the VMAs will boost him back to #1, which sucks because I wanted it to be Sara.

Sunday digital album sales for Eminem because of the VMA may be what will take the #1 away from Sara.

That is what i figured too monday to sunday is the sales week and the show happens sunday night so you would think some stores would close down before anybody could go out and buy the cd, most people would probably just wait till monday which would boost sales next week.

So I imagine those Sunday night sales might make a difference only if the gap is max. couple of thousand copies.
