Lady Gaga and Katy Perry lead nominations for the MTV European Music Awards (EMAs). Both singers are in the running to win five categories and go head to head with each other and 'Russian Roulette' singer Rihanna in three of them: Best Pop, Best Female and Best Song - some of the night's biggest awards. The three ladies they will be pitted against Miley Cyrus and Shakira in the Best Female category. The Best Male section will see Eminem, Justin Bieber, Usher, Enrique Iglesias and Kanye West battle it out at the awards, which will be held in Madrid on November 7. Katy's 'California Gurls' and Gaga's collaboration with Beyonce, 'Telephone', are also featured in the Best Video category, which sees them up against Thirty Seconds To Mars' track 'Kings and Queens', Plan B's 'Prayin' and Eminem's 'Love the Way You Lie' - which also features Rihanna. Gaga was the big winner at last Saturday's MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) - the US Equivalent of the EMAs - taking home eight trophies from 13 nominations. Accepting the trophy for Best Video for single 'Bad Romance', Gaga said: "I was so nervous tonight that I'd let my fans down. "I promised that if I won this tonight, I'd announce the name of my new record." She then went on to tell the thrilled crowd her new album would be called Born This Way, before singing part of the title song. 2010 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) main nominations: Best RockKings of Leon Linkin Park Thirty Seconds To Mars Muse Ozzy Osbourne Best AlternativeGorillaz Gossip Paramore Vampire Weekend Arcade Fire Best PopLady Gaga Usher Katy Perry Miley Cyrus Rihanna Best Hip HopT.I. Woot! I forgot about Miley and Shaki! Glad they got some love too! And yes it's pretty GaGa heavy but she deserves it :)

I don't understand Miley Cyrus nominations at all. Can't Be Tamed was successful in Europe? Did I miss something?
They should have nominated at least one European Female act in that category like Florence And The Machine for example.

Can't Be Tamed is Miley's most successful album in Europe because Europe are not as conservative as U.S.A Voting For Rihanna and Milez

Yea Can't Be Tamed is her biggest hit in Europe
I would've put Florence & co to Best Alternative instead of Gossip who haven't really achieved much in 2010 although I believe they are doing well in Central Europe.

The event is hosted by Eva Longoria-Parker. The evnt is becoming more american year by year, not that it matters cause MTV hasn't had anything good since 90's.

Really bad, nothing new. So many Americans, so little Europeans. All that love for Miley, it's crazy, she's noth big or even well known in Europe. Best song is just dreadfull, BR is the only one that deserved that nomiantion.

How did Miley get her nominations is weird because she's not even popular here.
Her song "Can't be tamed" peaked # 37 in Euro Hot 100.She definitlly did not deserve to be nominated.

It's sad that it's the European Music Awards yet most are American nominees. Another year dominated by american artists. Even Rihanna is starting to be more American than Barbadian

Yeah, Miley shouldn't be there. Either way, she won't win anyway.

People who are saying this is too American: MTV IS American. There are local categories too like best Finnish/Swedish/UK/Russian act etc. But those acts usually don't have the European appeal. US and UK acts do. It's a shame but that's the way it is.
One thing that missing though: best Dance. There have been huge dance hits this year: Alors on danse, Hot, songs by David Guetta & co. I think they're ignoring a big segment there. Also David Guetta could very well be nominated for Best Male and Alors on danse for Best Song.
MTV Europe Music Awards have had local performers each year: Jovanotti and Tiziano Ferro in Italy, Tokio Hotel in Germany, Outlandish in Copenhagen.. Also Röyksopp, Lordi, Bomfunk MC's and Kraftwerk have performed since 2000. Could those ever have a performance slot in the VMAs? I think not. Except Tokio Hotel of course :)

What I meant was that the company and almost all their programmes are American despite the local offices.
Would it interest anyone if it was European acts only? No Shakira, Eminem, Gaga, Katy Perry, Linkin Park, Usher or Rihanna.
The problem of the hits coming from European continent is that the acts are one hit wonders or have a limited appeal elsewhere than their core markets. I wouldn't do an awards show aired worldwide just based on them. That'd be respectable but not so good business for MTV.
I would love to see following acts performing though: Robyn Hurts The xx Kylie Minogue
So in a way, there is plenty to improve but at least MTV are showing the videos of those acts mentioned.

^I never said It should be european acts ONLY but there definitely should be some. There should be all acts from the planet, but it's 99% USA. Some of the most popular european/worldwide acts are ignored in favor of some very unpopopular/unknown acts in Europe (aka Miley). It's really silly to see no Kylie, Florence, Robbie, Robyn. Best New Act is USA only and there are some great European acts. Best Song category is awfull. Since they don't go for quality, what best song should represent, they go for what was hit and hence they should've nominated Alors On Dance and/or Waka Waka - We Speak No Americano. Another big mistake is that there is no dance category, europe is known for dance! Good news is that there's no Album category, that would be another mistake.

Kylie Minogue should have been nominated instead of Miley. She's from Australia but at least she's more relevant than Miley in Europe:
All The Lovers #4
Can't Be Tamed #37

I don't get why because she's always been an MTV darling here.. Big performances in 2001 (CGYOOMH) and 2003 (Slow) and she won two awards in 2002.

It's missing some class, the whole nominations I mean.
Kylie might have come in too late, though "All the lovers" were released in the summer. Best live act should definitely included PEB and Pink, since they had succesful tours in europe.
Bieber and Cirus will never make it in europe though they would win. Bieber will be forgotten propably next year..
