Lol, I can't believe that Like A G6 might reach #1.
Something like that would never had happened only 2 years ago (not hating tho, I love the song).
If it does reach #1, then it will fall into the very surprising #1's.

Why would a song like G6 not have reached #1 a couple of years ago?

I don't understand what are you trying to say....
Anyways, and this entirely MY opinion, Like A G6 is a very unlikely #1 song for the US market.
That's all

I wasn't challenging you, you said it like it was obvious and was confused why you thought this wouldn't have been a hit 2 years ago.
I was interested in hearing your reason. Since you have no reason....I guess that is it

Since you have no reason....I guess that is it Well my reason (as best as I can explain it, I'm not a native english speaker) is that two or more years ago, Electro House songs were almost non existent on the top ten of the Hot100..... they were something that would have been hits in Europe, not America. As I see it, it's great that the American public is embracing new genres. That's all.

So, who are the contenders for the #1 this week???
My take:
1. Like A G6, who will be around 80-85 AI (all mediabase of course) and will sell the same or a little less or more. 2. Just The Way You Are who will be around 130 AI and will sell like 10% less. 3. The new Taylor Swift Song, who will have to sell around 300k to seal the deal.... which I doubt she will.

as "Teenage Dream" makes it decline, before it does, i want to say thank you. Thank you for the most SHAKY-GROOVY song of the year. It's the most played song on my ipod. It truly defined 2010 for me. Thanks.

I'm not really arguing, but I think G6 is a very likely #1 song for the US- based on trends of the last 15 years.
Its a rap-based song. These have been topping the Hot 100 for 20 years.
Electro-pop has been huge for several years now.
Its kind of like if Boom Boom Pow can get to # 1, so can this. Not that surprising.

I don't see any surprise in Like a G6 going number one either.
I know we on this board are all familiar with the names of genres and such but I think the average person interprets this as a hip-hop song. The rap/singing technique with male verses and female choruses has been going on for 15 years now too. If you asked the average person what "electro-house" was I bet they'd have no clue.
I'm very pleased to see Like a G6 do so well because I think it is succeeding because people like it rather than because of some huge record label campaign. Similar to how Owl City had a hit last year.

I feel the same way, Like A G6 topping the charts is no surprise in the least. It is very much in the same electro-rap category as Boom Boom Pow. Why is that such a stretch? It's a rap-centric song and the beat is very electro/hip-hop standard. Now if a song like We No Speak Americano topped the chart, that would be a "surprise".

I disagree, but, I suppose that those who do listen to this type of music (I think it's a great song, btw) would be inclined to argue the opposite. To me though, this is a POP song sung through the use of "rapping" as is in the action, but definitely not the genre. The 2 demographics are just so different that I wouldn't group them in the same category. I feel the poster was saying that "Like A G6" is an example of current trends; however, 2 or more years ago (I'd personally say 4 years, prior to 2006) a song like this would not have even come close to topping the charts in the U.S.

First-day sales for "Speak Now" are 85,600. (http://www.facebook.com/notes/taylor-swift/speak-now-debuts-at-1-on-itunes/435378847022)
Idk what a typical first day:overall sales ratio is, though.

But songs like "Crank That (Soulja Boy)" and "Laffy Taffy" did top the charts. And out-of-left-field songs like "Paper Planes" have been charting high in recent years... You really think this wouldn't have come close to #1?

Thats crazy. Nowadays,if you got a catchy chorus with a nice beat, your heading towards the upper half of the Hot 100.

You really think this wouldn't have come close to #1? I'll give you Airplanes, but Crank That & Laffy Taffy are simply not comparable to Like A G6. And honestly, the demographics of those artists target audiences are so different that I just feel its unfair (to the genre and the listeners they support) to group them together. Plus, in 05, (taking it back 4/5 years) I really don't think "Like A G6" would have fit with Candy Shop, Let Me Love You, Run It, Gold Digger, We Belong Together, & Don't Forget About Us as #1s, leaving out the sole POP song "Hollaback Girl"

Why are Crank That / Laffy Taffy and Like a G6 incomparable? Because you like one of them?
All three were enormous iTunes sellers and huge on the rhythmic chart. I assure you, most people over 25 who don't obsess over the charts or genres lump them together.

The question that started this conversation was whether 2 (I argued 4) years ago "Like A G6" would have been likely to top the charts. From 2001 to 2005/6, every song that went #1 (not including Idol songs) was an Urban hit except 4 or so songs. That's 5 years where basically no POP songs went #1. Thus, it would stand to reason that if "Like A G6" was released then it probably would not have been as large of a hit that it is today. The End.

Thank you, at least someone got what I was trying to say. I say surprising because it's somewhat different from the current trend. Like for example Fireflies, etc. Oh, btw Like A G6 is Electro HOUSE, not any other genre. If people can't see the difference then.....
