Easily my least favorite album by him, but it's not really bad. Just a bit forgettable. I can't with the Embrya shade btw. Those sales predictions expected at least 90k.

First estimates have him debuting with 50-60k (55k-65k SPS). Urban Hang Suite peaked at #37 (1.8m to date). Unplugged peaked at #53 (803k to date). Embrya debuted at #3 with 149k (1.2m to date). Now debuted at #1 with 296k (1.7m to date). BLACKsummers'night debuted at #1 with 316k (1.213m to date). I forgot his debut peaked so low, I guess because it's still his biggest seller. Love that one.

The sales are pretty bad, even considering the sales climate. I thought he had a more dedicated fanbase.

It's not bad, but it's boring. Easily, my least favorite album from him. Of All Kind is good

Those sales are horrific but I listened to this yesterday and enjoyed it, despite struggle vocals throughout. He still evokes raw feeling and there are serious grooves going on. I agree with the critical acclaim for this.

Hee hee...hee hee...
This album isn't getting enough love on this board. I have lived with it for a little bit now and have given it multiple listens. Because of the grooves and the drums and some of the light reggae-dub style, I definitely love this. I put it above Black and NOW, I guess at this point. Embrya is still my favorite and I actually just heard the debut all the way for the first time but I liked it a lot. Embrya was what made me fall in love with Maxwell, plus...it is so sexy. This album is actually a grower. The struggle vocals are at least deployed for passion and angst so I buy them in his case. Lake By The Ocean is now in my top 5 Maxwell songs of all time. Right now, my top 5 are:
1. This Woman's Work 2. Lifetime 3. Pretty Wings 4. Lake By The Ocean 5. Cococure
I really appreciate how messy this album can be, yet completely controlled. There is a LOT going on in the final act of Fingers Crossed but the more I listen to it, the more it makes sense. There is a lot of jazz and fluidity here but also tightness, if that makes sense.

Truth be told Maxwell has always sung in multiple styles, he's always had that rasp. He's still capable of a smooth vocal delivery. I'm curious how Columbia will handle this project. I wouldn't mind if they cut it short and focus on "Night" which according to the man himself is almost done. "Of All Kind" which was originally planned as lead, needs to be the 2nd single. His falsetto is perfect on that one.

I like that song but it doesn't stick out to me as particularly memorable. Meanwhile, Fingers Crossed (one of my faves) is getting the Pitchfork star treatment. I love Hostage, Game of Thrones, P90x, and the feeling III gives me. But, the song of the album goes to: Lost. I am on the floor in a heap fanning myself by the time that masterpiece is over. He puts me THROUGH IT. WOW.
This album better be nominated for Grammys.
As for the rasp...yeah...I went back to Embrya while cooking and I noticed it there. His voice has definitely declined (rumors of drug use notwithstanding, the man does smoke cigarettes LOL) but it's most noticeable in the falsetto. It's not as strong and clear as it used to be but is a little dry. His voice does break a little too but I figure because some of the songs are so passionate, it fits.

It´s the least commercial album by Maxwell, which means it´s his musically most satisfying and consistent work, it´s not even comparable to his last album, which was really easy listening compared to this one. Lake By The Ocean is basically the only song to throw into commercial radio mouth and it almost doesn´t fit BSummersN, although "III" could be his "N In Paris". This guy is absolutely doing his own thing and not following current trends, but he has done it for the whole his musical career and it has definitely worked. I like how raw and lively some tracks sound, great job Maxwell!

This is the most promo ive seen him ever do, but there doesn't seem to be much hype. It's like the Maxwell Mystery is gone. He probably shouldve waited a few more years.

The problem with the sales is that he is selling to different audience/generation. This audience/generation does not care for this style of music, sadly. In the real world, this album should be doing 500K as a comeback from the Black album. He will be lucky to scan 500K if no momentum is shown within the next few weeks. It is awful, but this is our reality unfortunately.
P.S. I got his album from Wally World (Wal-Mart)

He is selling to his fans that purchased his music in the past. Young people aren't checking for him, but he has a core base.

He is selling to this generation, which is different. He doesn't have the style of music that this generation likes though. "We" the other generation does not follow these artists as when we were younger. The market has changed even if the artist hasn't. You are clearly missing my point, so why comment?

I am legit obsessed with this album. The last two songs (not counting Night) are just OK but WOW @ the rest. Stunning.

2 songs with ashy vocals but solid grooves and one song with a melody I can't recall. Still, 2 out of 5 ain't bad. @ me.

I'm so done with my sister right now, she's in here packing and was like 'tell Maxwell to hush...sounding like he's two breaths away from being a runaway slave like Anthony Hamilton." whatever, I like this album. My favorites right now are Lost, Of All Kind, and Listen Hear.

At least you appreciate Lost, the best song on the album. Maxwell really needs to put down the cigarettes/pipe and repair his voice though. I think I winced during III once or twice.
Song ranking time:
1. Lost 2. Fingers Crossed 3. Lake By The Ocean 4. Gods 5. Hostage 6. 1990x 7. The Fall 8. All The Ways Love Can Feel 9. III 10. Night
The others.

Long overdue and lost his fan base. Who's gonna be the next one falling into this pattern?
I'm thinking about New Amerykah part 3.

Can we speak on the major Prince influence on "III"? It literally sounds like a Prince song. I could easily see him singing that.

"Of All Kind" is a death song, the lyrics are so specific on someone passing on. It is so beautiful. I just love it so much.

From Billboard:
Maxwell’s new blackSUMMERS’night arrives at No. 3 with 59,000 units (57,000 in pure album sales). It’s the follow-up to the 2009 album BLACKsummers’night, which debuted at No. 1 with 316,000 copies sold. Before that, he released the 2001 album Now, which launched at No. 1 with 296,000.
In total, Maxwell has claimed four top 10 albums, as he also visited the region with 1998’s No. 3-peaking Embrya. (His first two charting albums missed the top 10. His debut effort Maxwell’s Urban Hang Suite topped out at No. 37, but spent a lengthy 78 weeks on the list. His second charting album, 1997’s MTV Unplugged EP, reached No. 53.)
The new album’s first single, “Lake by the Ocean,” has so far peaked at No. 50 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Comparably, BLACKsummers’night’s lead track, “Pretty Wings,” was in the top five of the chart the week that album debuted at No. 1. The song later spent 14 weeks atop the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.
The story is a bit different on the Adult R&B Songs airplay chart, where “Lake by the Ocean” has spent five weeks at No. 1. “Pretty Wings” also led the list -- and was tops the week its parent album hit the charts. The track spent a total of 12 weeks at No. 1. (The Adult R&B Songs chart ranks the most played tunes each week on a panel of adult R&B radio stations.)
