LOVED the performance, it makes me a proud fan when Kelly does big production on performances like that! I love how she strutted around and looked all sassy. That one part where she's walking with the dancers around her doing that shoulder move a la Stuff Like That There...amazing!

Best Performances By Artists Who Actually Sing. In Key.: Kelly Clarkson, God bless you. Not only did she look classy in a shape-enhancing red dress, Clarkson also showcased her artistry with a swing version of “Mr. Know It All,” complete with standup bass. You could almost hear Simon Cowell saying, back in the days when he wasn’t forced to say nice things because he’s responsible for the financial future of a talent show winner, “You took a risk tonight and it paid off.” blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-music-scene/2011/11/20/american-music-awards-remember-when-they-mattered/?cxntlid=thbz_hm__________________________________________________________________________ Live-Blogging The 2011 American Music Awards: We Could Have Had It All (But Then Adele Had To Go Have A Vocal Cord Hemorrhage)8:36 p.m. KELLLLLLYYYYYYYYYYY 8:37 p.m. I love Kelly Clarkson so much. So much. And this olde tyme news homage is just making it even stronger. 8:38 p.m. And I am really liking this ragtimey change-up for "Mr. Know It All." Also can I maybe get a dress like hers? AMAs 2011: Kelly Clarkson goes all 'Newsies'
November 20, 2011 | 6:08 pm Pop & Hiss will be posting live throughout the night. As the American Music Awards closed in on Hour No. 1 on Sunday night, Kelly Clarkson performed her "Mr. Know It All," giving the song a "Newsies"-like makover for the live presentation. If the chorus of the tune was instantly jarring, and the media-are-evil theme was long tired before the tune even began, Clarkson's deft mix of rock and vintage pop gave the song some old-school musical pizazz. Moments later, Enrique Iglesias showcased his "I Like How It Feels," a song full of stomping, hand-clapping beats, given an American club gloss courtesy of RedOne. Iglesias would have been better to stick with "I Like How It Feels" rather than switch into "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)," which is more anonymous of a club hit, despite the latter getting a boost from Ludacris. Earlier, Chris Brown once again showcased his impressive, Michael Jackson-inspired dance movies. Less impressive was his ballad crooning in "All Back." On the award front, Nicki Minaj was named favorite rap/hip-hop artist, and Rihanna's "Loud" won favorite soul/R&B album. latimesblogs.latimes.com/music_blog/2011/11/amas-2011.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PopHiss+(Pop+%26+Hiss+Music+Blog)_____________________________________________________________ Kelly Clarkson's jazzy, big-band version of 'Mr. Know It All' at the AMAs: What did you think?by Grady Smith Categories: American Music Awards, Kelly Clarkson, Pop, Snap Judgment, Things That Are Awesome At the American Music Awards, Kelly Clarkson came out swingin’. Not only did the original American Idol, clad in a sparkly red mermaid gown, dismiss rumors about her record label conflicts, sexuality, and style by belting, “You don’t know a thing about me,” to “reporters,” but she flipped the switch on her pop/R&B-lite single “Mr. Know It All,” turning it into a brassy big-band production. Surrounded by the 1930s equivalent of paparazzi (or maybe just the cast of Newsies), Clarkson bopped and swayed to the jazzy trombone blasts, and she nailed her big chorus riffs at the end of the number. Check it out below: We’re about halfway through the broadcast, and Clarkson remains the only performer that I’m convinced actually sang her whole song. (Scratch that, OneRepublic just came on stage, and Ryan Tedder is definitely not lip-syncing.) Let me amend my statement: Kelly Clarkson remains the only performer that I’m convinced actually sang her whole song, and sang it well. What did you think of Clarkson’s “Mr. Know It All” performance? What’s been your favorite so far? music-mix.ew.com/2011/11/20/kelly-clarkson-american-music-awards-2011/

I liked it. I definitely don't think it was by any means the "performance of the century" or anything, but it was just a good performance. I would have rather had something like the did on UK X factor though... that was awesome. And it worked well.

It's weird, a lot of the non-fans loved it, the press loved it, and the fans are coming in ragging on her. This is becoming quite the trend.

It's really funny you said that, because a lot of the articles I'm reading are calling it "the performance of the night" and one even said of her career... ? She looked great though. I know very little about fashion, but the dress she wore on "Sunrise" that wasn't tight on her lower half looked amazing on her. The really tight ones she wears tend to be unflattering, I think.

I liked the performance, but the reason why many fans and myself may be harsh is because we know it can/could've been better. Can you blame a Kelly fan for having ginormous expectations? But that's all I gotta say about that.
Anyways, nice increase on CHR today yet again! Once it hopefully reaches top ten, I'll be more than satisfied with its performance.

But that's all I gotta say about that. I get that, but her fans are saying "Oh I wish she'd perform at these events more", "Oh I wish she'd do something with a little more production" and then she does and it's not big/small/fast/slow enough. If I were her reading all this (and over at The Express) from her fans I'd just not bother in the future. And I'm hardly all sunshine and roses. I have my gripes like everybody else, but nothing's good enough at the moment.

I was like "this is awkward, this is awkward, this is awkward...I can't hear her, I can't hear her, I can't hear her." And then I realized that maybe...just maybe I was being a bit too sensitive as a super-fan and should just watch and enjoy it...so I watched it again. I made the right decision. At first I would give it a 3/10 and now I would give it a 9/10. LOVED IT. Very exciting finish to the MKIA era.

I loved it. I can't wait for the day she has 100% complete artistic control and isn't aiming for radio hits.

I agree with both Justin and yoKC on this one. On the one hand we fans are extremely harsh. This may be true in other fanbases too, but I've never seen any group that can be more negative-Nancy than Kelly fans. We expect perfection and too often we lose our $hit when we don't get it. On the other hand, Justin is right in that we tend to be this way because we know she can do better. I liked the performance. It IS one of the better ones from last night and when you grade purely on vocals she was pretty much the best. The problem I have is that saying she was one of the best isn't saying much; there simply weren't any WOW moments. I'm looking at kworb.net and none of the songs performed last night seem to have moved much, if at all, in position. MKIA had moved up some a few hours before the show but that was due to the sudden second (third?) wind it has caught in airplay, not the show. So realizing there weren't any WOW moments just makes me that much more salty that Kelly didn't go out there and slay with a super energetic performance. WDKY would have easily soared to the top 10 on iTunes had she performed that (and that is taking into account that her performances of it so far haven't been "perfect" yet). If not WDKY, going with a more rocked out/amped up version of MKIA would have stood out more than a laidback big-ban version. That's the frustrating part about being a Kelly fan sometimes; it's like this unspoken understanding that neither she nor her label care all that much about her crushing the competition as long as she just coasts alongside them. And I know Kelly's reasons for not caring so much, but it doesn't stop me from feeling selfish sometimes and wanting to see her crushing, because I know it would be so easy for her to do it with just a little more strategy and effort. But with all that blather said... I can't wait for the day she has 100% complete artistic control and isn't aiming for radio hits. I will absolutely co-sign with this.

I watched the performance again, and it was really good. I guess I just wasn't really expecting that the first time I saw it, but watching the youtube video really got it to click with me. So glad she did something different and I think it paid off. Actually it might be my favorite performance of the entire era so far!

At some point, the artist just wants to go out there and perform...without constantly thinking about how the song fits into selling more records. I'm glad that Kelly gave the fans something exciting and different, and as a bonus she enjoyed herself. This has been a hugely rewarding era as a fan.

OMG! Kelly Clarkson to perform "Mr. Know It All" "Stronger" on 'X Factor' Kelly Clarkson is making the leap: The singer whose TV career is synonymous with American Idol is reuniting with her former judge Simon Cowell on Fox’s The X Factor. Her most recent album “Stronger” debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 200. insidetv.ew.com/2011/11/21/kelly-clarkson-x-factor/EDIT: Oops got beaten haha ;) Also funny how both Kelly and Bruno performed on the same night on UK X Factor a few weeks ago.

Awesome! I think it was nice to give Mr. Know It All one last push (o how opinions change). It never got the kind of promotion it did in the States compared to World Wide. Plus now everyone will have two songs fresh in their minds right before Black Friday, Mr. Know It All from the AMAs and Kill on X-Factor. Isn't that what we've been wanting!?
Hopefully she 'kills' this Wednesday!

I LOVE the audio from rehearsal. Sounds fun! Im all for her continuing with this song and then going for WDKY starting of the new year. I think they have a great plan, Im not worried. If this is the case the album will continue falling and may not even be in the top 100 by the time What Doesn't Kill You is released. Album sales peak around November and December, and drop in January and February. It's not a smart business decision. I honestly think RCA has shown more incompetence for this album than in any other era. I can't believe I actually had optimism at one point.

Loved that performance. How often have a lot of us wished for her to go big at an award show and do something different? I just can't express enough how pleased I am with everything that has happened this era--she's just so into it. And she looked amazing.
It's a weird feeling watching the performance and being so pleased with it and then coming to Pulse. I understand when fans say they've earned their high expectations--certainly true--but I don't believe there would have been a performance of MKIA in the world that would have been good enough, because we had decided that this was the perfect launching pad for WDKY. There are, as usual, so many factors we don't know. If she is indeed performing WDKY at X Factor, I think we can say with near certainty that performing MKIA was out of her control. These shows do have a say in the performances--they have to be cleared by producers, and it was common not too long ago that the producers almost always required lip syncing (much like the Superbowl), but that has sort of eroded. Anyway, they do have some say over things, so it's always a possibility that they asked her to sing her current single, and to try and not blow the promo spot, she decided to go outside her comfort zone and do something "big" with the performance of a song that looked past its peak.
But, my frustration was much more palpable last night, and I'm glad I didn't post. It seems that people have watched again with claws retracted and enjoyed the performance outside the context of what they think she should have done. I've definitely been guilty of that fan reaction in the past, but I'm having a hard time justifying it this time around. With the exception of adds dates timing, everything this era has gone exactly as any of us (it seems to me) would have killed for any of her post-Breakaway eras to go. She looks great, sounds great, it's a great album, and she has had lots of great avenues to promote it. She's changing things up with her performances and music videos. She's getting a Q4 release. I know everyone knows this, and I'm not saying this from a "ENJOY IT MY WAY" type of place, I just think, when we get an era like this, we should enjoy it, and resist the temptation to hold every single move against an impossible standard of nothing less than absolutely, 100% what we, as individual fans, want. Little will measure up.
If not, though, I'll just continue to have a blast with this era with yoKC and a handful of others.

I think this was the case. Enrique Iglesias performed "Tonight I'm [Lovin'] You" and J.Lo performed "On the Floor. " Granted, both were part of a medley with a newer single, but the AMAs last night were more of a "Year in Review" show than a new single show. The producers of the show decide which songs artists perform, and while the artist and label have some say, it's the producers who have the final say.

And whether or not she was mandated to sing MKIA, Franklin's point is excellent--two fairly high profile promo spots going to two different songs the week of Black Friday is kind of brilliant.

And Kelly fans, rather than over analyze and worry, just enjoy the album and the era. No offense, but that's crap. If you're a big fan of an artist, odds are that you are going to enjoy said artist's albums. However, that doesn't mean that you can't have high expectations and "over analyze" things. It's all part of being a fan, especially if you are someone who is heavily invested in the career of your favorite artist. I'm a big fan of many artists. The only investment I make is by buying their records, attending their concerts, and wishing them well in whatever they do. I can't control their career, so I draw a line somewhere. After all, their career is just a job.

If the second single had been released to radio around the time of the album release as they should have, there's no way she would have done Mr. Know It All. The singles were very poorly planned so they still have some responsibility even if the producers made the final decision.
